    I would like to thank everyone who supports Smarter Every Day on Patreon ( www.patreon.com/smartereveryday ). You're making all of our supersonic baseball data dreams come true. I have some very interesting things planned for the cannon, and I'm excited to share it. If you'd like to consider supporting on Patreon as well, I'd love to send you a baseball. If you've been a supporter for a while now, I have a little thank you headed your way in the near future (still working out the logistics). *_Thank you for sticking with me._* The fact that you've decided to not only support, but to *stick with me* is huge.

      * 28 g 12-gauge slug * 537 m/s = about 15 N-s

      Now I want Destin to make a video to see how far they can shoot a baseball. Might have to go out into a desert somewhere for that though. And they may need to imbed a gps tracker in the baseball in order to find it. 😂

    • @AndrewZonenberg
      @AndrewZonenberg 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@jonandvicki Rough numbers say 14.6 miles for 1074 MPH muzzle velocity, starting close to ground level, with zero air drag. So that's an upper bound on what's achievable.
      The data he collected in this video should allow a reasonable approximation of the ballistic coefficient (at sea level pressure... drag is lower at altitude), which will allow us to predict range far more accurately. One question is that of structural integrity: if the ball begins to break up due to stress in flight (especially when decelerating through max Q) there will be threads and bits of leather flailing around which greatly increase drag. So the BC of an intact ball might not be the best number to use.

    I would love to see a high speed thermal image of the impacts, either on the steel plate or on the sprinkles. The energy of that ball is significantly being dissipated as heat, and it would be fascinating to see where it goes and at what rate it decays.

    • @Bennici
      @Bennici ปีที่แล้ว

      The amount of heat loss is proportional to how (in)elastic the collision is. The baseball is fairly elastic (until it isn't, at which point talking about the temperature of the rapidly dissipating debris cloud is mostly pointless), so I wouldn't expect it to heat up much. The sprinkles for example deformed quite a bit and stayed that way, so that would be interesting. Not sure about the mayonnaise or the steel plate, but I would expect almost no heat transfer to the mayo in this short amount if time (lots of water in mayo, which takes longer to heat up relative to other materials). The steel plate I would expect to be a couple degrees warmer for a minute or two after you shoot a Mach 1 ball at it, but that's just a guess.

    I noticed something interesting happening at 13:58 just before the baseball hits the sprinkles. Around the laces on the right side of the ball, you can see a bluish halo. Is that a result of drag on the laces, light bending due to turbulence, difference in pressures like a cavitation bubble, or something else?

      Fun fact Mayonnaise is the invention of the French chef of the Duke de Richelieu in 1756. While the duke was defeating the British at Port Mahon, his chef was creating a victory feast that included a sauce made of cream and eggs. When the chef realized that there was no cream in the kitchen, he improvised, substituting olive oil for the cream. A new culinary masterpiece was born, and the chef named it 'Mahonnaise' in honour of the Richelieu's victory.
      Each time you eat Mayonnaise you are celebrating a british defeat 😉.

      I always have a sharpie and ink pen with me. It's great... until people around you realize that they don't have to remember to keep one themselves. Not that I usually mind but I understand the struggle. :D

    There are so many TH-cam channels that are toxic and only exist to divide or create controversy but this guy is truly what's great about TH-cam. He literally is there to teach us things that we would not normally know or maybe never considered. His passion for science is contagious. Even the excitement he showed for a mere caterpillar is refreshing. Keep up the great work 👍

    Stoked that you're finally revisiting this. I'd love to be in the vicinity when that cannon goes off. You should see if you can split the ball with a huge "sword" of sorts.

      The Slow Mo Guys shot an axe with a pellet gun and took a while to get it right. This thing seems like it would work a lot better because it aims really well and the projectile also is a lot bigger.

    Sprinkles the Caterpillar. I think the channel has just gotten a mascot.
    When those sprinkles spread across the back stop it made me wish you had a double slit behind the target so we could see the interference pattern on the back stop.

    Just watched this for the first time. Amazing. A perfectly ordinary jar of Mayo. First it's there, then it 'stops being', 'fails to persist', 'ends existing'... So incredible. Thank you so much. Keep up the awesome work. Praying for you and your teams safety.
