If you melt the cheese first , you can get a lot of the fat out before you dry it. You wont waste paper towls this way. And you have less mess. You should store it in a dark glass jar with a little bag of silica in it. Then it shouldn't go bad that easy. I still have a jar in my cabinet from four years ago that is still good. I found that ones with higher suger turn darker color in time. Just mine have never gone bad. They still have the taste. Just the color changes. No yucky smell either. And to save money if you buy a bottle of dry grated cheese like kraft cheese. Dont put it in the frig like they tell you. It will mold and go bad. There should be no reason to put a dry grated cheese in the frig. It will only collect moisture. I think they tell people this si they buy more.
How do you melt it first?
@Deborah you should make a demonstration video
I've always put my can of parmesan in the fridge???? I know this is old comment but hope your still around to see.. it says on the can to refrigerate after opening???
I love how you took every precaution to dry these properly! Thanks for this, can't wait to try it!
I'm just loving your older videos ☺️. Feeling so blessed that I found you
I love your channel. I enjoy it daily. I always feel like running away to your land. hahaha I really got into Our Half Acre Homestead when I was in rehab for the broken leg. I so enjoyed it. Your channel and a few others were my constant companions. I so appreciate all the dehydrator recipes and all I have learned here. Keep growing and sharing.
Lol my Mom had that grater slicer thing I remember as a kid it was my job to grind n blend everything. Thanks for happy childhood memory.
I'm going backpacking this weekend and I've already dehydrated some eggs and bacon for our breakfasts. Thanks to this video we will be eating cheesy eggs! Thanks!!
Butter and flour like that is called a rue. My mother taught me to make it when I was young. She use it in making baked Mac and cheese, with the crispy cheesy layer on the top. We never had Kraft MC growing up. I use it making was ked scalloped potatoes and ham, yes with cheese. My late husband's favorite. . So good
I just got some extra cheese on sale and it’s way more than I can us, and I had the idea that maybe I could dehydrate it. Thanks so much. ( I wasn’t so thrilled when I first tried dehydrating, but am so glad I gave it another go. I have been having a ball this summer. ).
I do not recommend dehydrating cheese...unless you are going to store it in a cool dark place..or refridgerate..it WILL last longer that way..and won't mold
I haven't ever thought of doing cheese. The way I dehydrate came about by accident. I use my oven top on my kitchen cookstove. I've only done a few things...peppers, tomatoes, garlic and I think that is it. Reason being, I gave my main floor to my kids for two years once my mom passed away. But they will be moving out and I will have my stove back. Yippee to getting the main floor back. When I get back on track I may try this.
IF you melted the cheese first you could save the butter and a Bunch of paper towels! Just sayin'. :)
I'm enjoying ALL of your videos. Thank you for taking the time!
I bought a bunch of shredded cheese and I put it on paper towels and it didn't stick to it. I change the paper every 4 hours. I love how my cheese powder turned out
Wonderful this helped alot. I have mt cheese dehydrating right now at 90°
Such a beautiful Boston terrier!
Wow! Who would have thought?! I so want to try cheese making. Maybe this winter. And now I have a way to preserve it! Thanks:)
Can't wait to see your videos of it! 😁
Haha! I use my whisk from my mixer too! This is so awesome! Thank you! Thank you! THANK YOU!
Just an idea, add some turmeric to the cheesy pasta to give it some colour.
And anatto
Oh awesome! That's fantastic Bev. Adding some dry mustard powder and or a dash Worcestershire sauce would make it really awesome.
Interesting video. Than you very much for sharing.
Oh I really want to try this. Since hurricane Dorian hit us, and a we are a family of 9 without power for 7 days I could totally us this. Love ya and thanks for sharing Peace love and Happiness ~ Tracey
So much to learn 👍😍
You could add a little tumeric for the color. It doesn't affect the taste but will make it yellow-er.
I don’t want to deluge you with comments, but I had to crack up watching you cook. I rarely measure unless I am baking, so I am glad to see a kindred spirit.
I so love all your videos! Thank you for all your time and effort with educating all of us! You are truly genuine and one who does deserve appreciation in all aspects! In your experience and knowledge what would be the best dehydrator to get? I've been looking at several styles but have no experience. Thank you for sharing with us!
Thank you SO much Honey!
Love you videos! You are a WONDERFUL teacher....much Love and gratitude
Using the whisk from your mixer.... that was my huge takaway 😂 So resourceful!
Just did a pound of cheese to try it in a recipe. this will be a money saver.
im gonna try this i just got dehydrator last month i been behydrating every thing tomatoes chips are my fav so far but this looks good
Tomato chips? That sounds delicious
Isn't is delicious? I grind mine and mix it with dried celery, carrots, peppers, Garlic and Onions and I grind it all together with Pink Himalayan Sea Salt and I use it as my own personal seasoning! It is delicious! Imagine making dehydrated CHIPS of all kinds with your own seasoning! I am going to be making Kale chips with it and get it to stick by turning it with a little olive oil! Yum!
+idk what tomato chips rock!
Another great video, thank you! I'd like to ask 2 questions. Can you dehydrate any cheese? Also, can you recommend a decent dehydrator for someone on a fixed income? I might have to save up for it, and that's okay. But need to know as there's so much information out there and everyone's promoting their own products. Again, thank you!
OMG I have to try this out. good way to use up cheese before it goes bad. we buy cheese in bulk and sometimes we don't get to use it up in time
Wow never knew you could dehydrate cheese! Wow! 😲
Do you think that parchment paper would work when you start drying the cheese, or perhaps good butcher's paper?
I've never seen cheese powder before, I don’t know if they sell it here (UK). Yours has no weird colours or chemicals though, so at least you know you're eating real
food! Have you found it retains it's flavour for however long you want to store it, or do you have to use it quite quickly?
Just wonder if boiling/simmering the cheese in water will get it to release the fat to the surface. Skim off and then drying the defatted cheese to get the cheese solids which can be ground into powder.
once again I'm amazed!
+Billy Branch Homestead Blessings wonderful!
How well did it hold up stored awhile? Also on a different note, If you store your store bought milk in a glass container with lid it's lasts twice as long I find.
That looks so good! I wish I had the patience.
Lol I dunno about anyone else, but I get pissed off, when someone tries to text me or calls me when I am watching Mrs B's videos! Ugh!
I don't like being disturb at all when I am watching these videos.. I'm sure most viewers feel the same way too! Omg I love the old Pyrex bowl also. Love love love this stuff lol I have got to try this recipe !!
Would you be able to save some effort and oil by using Low or No-fat cheese to start with?
I have some leftover tomato sauce that was store-bought. Since I was already dehydrating tomatoes I added one sheet with the sauce on it figuring I could powder at all and mix it together. I can’t get the sauce past the fruit rollup leather stage. It will never turn into a powder. Is that because the sauce probably had oil in it?
I know this video is 4 years old, but when I got a dehydrator, you taught me so many valuable lessons. I do have a question that I hope you see, after all this time. Do you have any tips on drying Parmesan cheese?
That would be yummy on popcorn.
Watched another video. She made cloth rings for hers to put cheese on and absorb the oils
I was watching a video by Heidi from Rain Country Homestead, she made a cloth that would fit on her trays from non dyed cotton. I'm wondering if this would work and help absorb the oil from the cheese so you wouldn't have to use all that paper. and cloth can be washed and reused. might be worth trying?
I'm thinking the same thing! It would be nice to have a lot of cloth to use that you can wash and reuse to keep from using so many paper towels.
Blessed Gypsy, Thank you for your comment! I want to try to dehydrate cheese. I first watched Rain Country and am now watching this. I could not understand what fabric that Heidi at rain country used until I just read your post. 💕. So now I have to find the fabric someplace. Hope it’s not hard. Than you, again!
Thank you for the tutorial.
We tried to dry some cheddar cheese but we
got some really really greasy dry cheese after two days of drying on low temperature. Please kindly advise .
Pressure can it.
@@gbear1005 not sure what you mean by that.
Same here... I guess I have to take all that time to soak up the grease with paper towels? Or try cooking it first and some separating the grease from the pan...
I'm guessing that it is probably healthier too considering most of the oil is out of it? That mac and cheese looked super tasty.
+WildRoseCountryGirl when making the sauce..if you add a 1/2 tsp of dry mustard powder it give it more zing.
enjoyed your video .thanks so much .i am learning alot..
my pleasure!
I have a cheap ALDI dehydrator. No fan, only heat. No temp settings. Just plug in and unplug to stop. Will this work for cheese?
do you put oxygen absorbers in the jar before sealing? great video. thanks
+sandy fo no..but that's a good idea!
+OurHalfAcreHomestead thanks... keep up the good work. I'm learning heaps. Did some cheese yesterday. turned out perfect, though I did find after powdering it it was still a little greasy so I returned it to the dehydrator for awhile longer on paper towel which I changed about every 45mins.
I did this we love it
I would not have the patience to do this, so hat's off to you! But my mom used to have that exact same strainer when I was growing up! So, a bit of nostalgia there...Did you hear that Kraft is planning to remove the artificial dyes and preservatives from the blue box mix by January 2016? They will replace with turmeric and paprika, which was a bit of a relief since my kids like it and it has to be orange. LOL..
+willydawgs wow that is good to know!
willydawgs they still use wood pulp in their recipe though!
I am finally going to start dehydrating and my question, is it okay for temperature is 160 degrees? My dehydrator has preset 160 degrees.
Oh omg who would of thunk it, this is a must try for this weeks dehydrating, was your cheese full fat Bev? I'm not a fan of buying altered food, so hoping your cheese was full fat x
You can take and wax up block of cheese and it keeps longer and you don't have to worry about the oils in it in fact you want the oils in it that's part of the cheese it'll keep up to 35 years
It's been days still not done and what a mess I made.lol it's been fun..I tryes the eggs they spilled all over ..
Can you reuse the oiled paper towels as fire starter?
+delana phelps Yes, we save oily paper towels and also dryer lint - stuff them in a cardboard tube from a toilet roll and they make BRILLIANT firelighters / kindling.
Omg I never thought of doing this for fire starters. My God I am learning so much to use everything and waste not. Totally awesome!
I cannot wait to start using my new dehydrator!
You're the best, woman!! :-)
If u use parchment paper u can dehydrate shredded cheeses
Thx for this vid. I did it all and when I went to make the mac and cheese, it was grainy!!! Help! I have so much cheese powder.
Omigoodness, my mom had that same grater when I was a kid. I remember.it had 3 or 4 different heads; one that sliced like yours and 2 diff ones for large and fine grate. It worked quite well. Such memories. :)
I would think that lining the drying trays with paper towels one would end up hindering proper air flow around the product. Just using the center hole would be insufficient. Haven't tried it but just my observation.
Hi. The reason I am commenting is coz I am looking for answers. I want to make cheese popcorn and don't to spend on cheese powder which is not available readily in my country.
Couple of hours back, I shredded half a pound of Cheddar cheese and left it to be dried.
My idea was to dry it using Sun and then use it.
However, the sight of so much grease bothers me since it might hamper the end product, the popcorn. Please advise.
Yummy!!👍
My parents had the exact same grater.
Hmmmm . . . wonder where it went.
I didn't take it!
Eggsellent!
That looked so good ...
DAFT QUESTION......can you dehydrate those between 2 pieces of paper towel?
That is a great ideal.
have you dehydrated milk?
Why does the dried cheese get powdered at the end? All the dehydrated cheese vidoes I have seen end that way.
Great video, I cheated I bought a jar of dehydrated cheese, I don't have the patience to go to that effort, but another item ticked off for the pantry.
what type of funnel are yu using and where can u get one ?
Canning funnel. Walmart has them or wherever you buy your jars.
How did this end up storing ?
Eat one, dry one, eat one, dry two, eat one, dry one, eat two, dry two . . . . I'd never be done but I'd be well fed!
I'm interested in making my own sour cream powder, do you think it would work ok?
+Bella Sette I have never done it..so if you are going to try..start with a SMALL amount.
+OurHalfAcreHomestead Ok, I think I will try, and thank you for the fast reply! :)
What don't U think of my friend ? U amaze me. Keep these goody videos coming please
You are a patient woman.
Can you store this at room temperature?
I'm just wandering instead of drying the cheese could you dehydrate the cheese sauce?
I have not dehydrated cheese since..so all I can sauce is you can try..but the fat content would make it difficult I would think?
I have been known to add either pickled red pepper or fresh red pepper and the "kids" think it is orange cheese, chuckle! 2 thumbs up
BRILLIANT!
I know this is old. But I just watched a video where the man put his in beginning on paper towels and changed every hr. Seemed to work
Can you use shredded cheese?
Yes you can. U need to have a special mat so the fine grated pieces don't fall through. Plastic canvas for embroidery? works well on mine. 🇨🇦
Did you find that you used less powdered cheese than you would have the equivalent fresh? I find that you (meaning me) needs LOADS of cheese to get a decent cheese sauce, I love Mustard in mine too, usually Dijon &/or a grainy kind, for taste plus good old Coleman's powder for zing.
yes I had to use more because I don't have all the flavour enhancers that they put in cheese powder that you buy in the store.
I just buy Hoosier hill cheddar cheese, this looks fabulous but too much work, for not a lot of cheese powder...
I wouldn’t buy boxed Mac and cheese anyway! Nasty and way too salty! Might try this
I recommend you storing it in the refrigerator after you've ground it just like you would parmesan
Wow, thanks. didn't know you could dehydrate cheese. figured the fat content would make it spoil. On a side note, I can't see your face, but your voice sounds like Kathy Bates (a compliment).
+capntrauma Thank you!! I LOVE Kathy Bates!
I just asked about this in a facebook group and was told is shouldn't be done, so I set out to find evidence of the contrary. Thank you for doing this! That oil though, oy! Maybe that's why people say not to do it, because it's so labor intensive?
It IS labour intensive..and I have not done it since! I just grate cheese as I need it
Was it Nancy
You don't use metrics for cooking?
Too much work. I'll just stick to using regular block cheese.
Your videos seem blurry
Love you videos! You are a WONDERFUL teacher....much Love and gratitude
