Im from Philippines and i like latin Music im a dance teacher for almost 12-15 years im always using latin to my class and even now in my new job in Thailand im using Latin. everytime i hear the beat of latin music i can't stop my mind and body to make choreography. We have a group of kids composed of all girls we called them Young Latina's. But now they are matured and some of them are competing in Latin Dancesport. i hope someday i can go to Latin country.

Here's a bit of historical information to Yarey Melendez. THE MERENGUE WAS BORN IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC. The Dominicans own it by the grace of God and it was the Dominicans whom gave it it's flavor, shape, and form. The merengue is the soul and heart feeling of a people. The Dominican people. As much as plena is the soul of Puerto Rico. It was a Dominican musician from the 1840's called JUAN BAUTISTA ALFONSECA BARI whom wrote the first merengue ever into the musical staff. According to historical data, the ' son ' from Cuba originated in the Dominican Republic but it was taken to Cuba by two sisters and guess what ?? It was the Cubans whom gave it shape and form, so they surely owned it. But then in the late 60's and early 70's a Dominican band leader called Johnny Pacheco created a new form of the Cuban music and named it salsa. But furthermore, he created a musical institution called FANIA ALL STARS where the most well known Puerto Ricans salseros and some Dominicans too were born. Johnny Pacheco was the man behind the idea, and businessman Jerry Masucci was the financist behind it. So my dear Yarey, it just goes to show how we all (Puerto Ricans, Cubans and Dominicans) have so much in common, not to mention such a rich cultural background. But just for the record, the first city founded in the new world in 1496 was SANTO DOMINGO. The first university was also established in SANTO DOMINGO. By the way, the university it's still kicking and many of the students come from PUERTO RICO. The first cathedral was founded in SANTO DOMINGO. During colonial times the center of operations of everything that took place in the three islands was none other than SANTO DOMINGO DE GUZMAN. Yes, the capital of the Dominican Republic. So yes, there is plenty of Dominican culture to go around. But I think that applies to all three islands. We have to stop thinking of ourselves as being better than the other and instead cherish our culture and love and respect each other.

Actually, that's not fully true. 'Historical' data does not point to any Dominican influence on Son. In fact, i have read on a site (with no legitimate basis) that very same story, and yet nothing i have ever researched, that actually holds credibility, has ever confirmed that story about the sisters from DR. I am talking about major studies done on Cuban culture and history, by world renowned ethnologists and musicologists. By the time Dominicans actually migrated to Cuba (which came way later in history, probably after Cubans were travelling to DR), Son was already established. Son came from Changui and Nengon, both products of Oriente province. Neither had any instrumentation or arrangements from DR. Merengue is said to have originated from the Habanera dance in Cuba, which many ethnomusicologists believe to be true, but to be honest, i give that the same credibility i give that story about the sisters from DR. Which is virtually none. Merengue has more in common with Dominican Palos than anything in Cuba, same way Son has more in common with Changui and Bolero in Cuba than anything in DR. Don't take this as me trying to say one is better than the other, but i have heard the whole "Sisters from DR in Cuba thing" and i can't find a single relevant document that confirms it in the slightest. Cuba's rhythms and culture go back a very long time, as does DR, Haiti, PR and many other places. But you are correct about something. Cultural swaps occurred over the course of history. Cubans love Merengue and Bachata as well and have used some of it in modern music. Same goes with Reggaeton. They call it Cubaton in Cuba. There is certainly alot of swapping back and forth in the Caribbean.

Here's a bit of historical information to Yarey Melendez. THE MERENGUE WAS BORN IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC. The Dominicans own it by the grace of God and it was the Dominicans whom gave it it's flavor, shape, and form. The merengue is the soul and heart feeling of a people. The Dominican people. As much as plena is the soul of Puerto Rico. It was a Dominican musician from the 1840's called JUAN BAUTISTA ALFONSECA BARI whom wrote the first merengue ever into the musical staff. According to historical data, the ' son ' from Cuba originated in the Dominican Republic but it was taken to Cuba by two sisters and guess what ?? It was the Cubans whom gave it shape and form, so they surely owned it. But then in the late 60's and early 70's a Dominican band leader called Johnny Pacheco created a new form of the Cuban music and named it salsa. But furthermore, he created a musical institution called FANIA ALL STARS where the most well known Puerto Ricans salseros and some Dominicans too were born. Johnny Pacheco was the man behind the idea, and businessman Jerry Masucci was the financist behind it. So my dear Yarey, it just goes to show how we all (Puerto Ricans, Cubans and Dominicans) have so much in common, not to mention such a rich cultural background. But just for the record, the first city founded in the new world in 1496 was SANTO DOMINGO. The first university was also established in SANTO DOMINGO. By the way, the university it's still kicking and many of the students come from PUERTO RICO. The first cathedral was founded in SANTO DOMINGO. During colonial times the center of operations of everything that took place in the three islands was none other than SANTO DOMINGO DE GUZMAN. Yes, the capital of the Dominican Republic. So yes, there is plenty of Dominican culture to go around. But I think that applies to all three islands. We have to stop thinking of ourselves as being better than the other and instead cherish our culture and love and respect each other.
I agree, in my area the line is blurred between Puerto Ricans and Dominicans...they hang out together and are intertwined between families marrying one another without prejudice and guess what....like Cubans they share the same exact ancestral background meaning they are the same exact peoples spread across the Islands.

Actually, that's not fully true. 'Historical' data does not point to any Dominican influence on Son. In fact, i have read on a site (with no legitimate basis) that very same story, and yet nothing i have ever researched, that actually holds credibility, has ever confirmed that story about the sisters from DR. I am talking about major studies done on Cuban culture and history, by world renowned ethnologists and musicologists. By the time Dominicans actually migrated to Cuba (which came way later in history, probably after Cubans were travelling to DR), Son was already established. Son came from Changui and Nengon, both products of Oriente province. Neither had any instrumentation or arrangements from DR. Merengue is said to have originated from the Habanera dance in Cuba, which many ethnomusicologists believe to be true, but to be honest, i give that the same credibility i give that story about the sisters from DR. Which is virtually none. Merengue has more in common with Dominican Palos than anything in Cuba, same way Son has more in common with Changui and Bolero in Cuba than anything in DR. Don't take this as me trying to say one is better than the other, but i have heard the whole "Sisters from DR in Cuba thing" and i can't find a single relevant document that confirms it in the slightest. Cuba's rhythms and culture go back a very long time, as does DR, Haiti, PR and many other places. But you are correct about something. Cultural swaps occurred over the course of history. Cubans love Merengue and Bachata as well and have used some of it in modern music. Same goes with Reggaeton. They call it Cubaton in Cuba. There is certainly alot of swapping back and forth in the Caribbean.

Ismael Rivera was the first salsero. Who is Puerto Rican. Salsa grew its fame and exposure in New York from Puerto Ricans. Cuba has son, mambo and cha cha cha which are all beautiful music, but salsa is 100% Puerto Rican.
