The great thing about Shanxi style is that it is literally the Nogi version of Shuai Jiao.
This is a provincial wrestling competition called the Náoyáng Festival"/“挠羊赛” held in/near Xīnzhōu city/ 忻州, in Shānxī province/山西. Shanxi borders Inner Mongolia to the north. Shanxi wrestling also called “挠羊”摔跤/Náo yáng shuāijiāo. 挠羊/ Náoyáng in Shanxi colloquially means to lift aloft a sheep. In the last competition in May 2023, the winner got RMB 3,000 as prize and the title “挠羊汉” or Sheep-raising man." Originally the winner got a live sheep hence the name of the competition and the white sheep statue in the background. In more local competitions the winner still gets a live sheep. :-)
Shuai jiao is the truest Chinese martial art. The secret sauce of Sanda kung fu. the strikes from kung fu are handy but it's not enough. The wrestling of Shuai jiao is what fills in. I highly recommended it.
Great work again. I think in the late Qin dynasty, It's not hard to find a grappler in China at the level of Jigoro Kano or a western wrestler like farmer burns. I think Shuai Jiao is a legitimate original martial art just based on the abundance of unique techniques and applications.

Someone was saying that traditional wushu and Taiji became more popular than shuaijiao in mid to late Qing dynasty is that the so called wushu masters had theories or “stories” that can connect their fighting styles to Tao philosophy and qi. The Qing elites and royal families loved those stories. ( they had too much time and money). On the contrary, shuaijiao masters could not come up with those stories. It is sad that after Qing dynasty, many shuaijiao masters became street performers, but many Wushu masters continued to enjoy their fame and wealth.
@@EliW95 It's because there are many variations that can lead to death. What folks don't realize is traditional martial arts forms are supposed to be full of grappling. For example the throw at 2:49 It's essentially more about pulling the head then lifting the leg but depending on angle and height that person will land flat on their head. Thus when it was codified as a sport they chose the safest versions of those throwing concepts. The rest were left for the closed door or combat department. My Shuai Jiao instructor in Chicago was who kung fu instructors would come to to get that closed door training. So I'm just repeating from the horses mouth in way because I wasn't a kung fu guy. I'm a Silat and Kali guy. Fun fact that concept of head pulling is called putar kapala and from experience the one you can see online is nothing compared to the versions that can have you in front of a judge. Anyway When my training ended in those I went to a kung fu school so I could kickbox and GM Tsai sent me to the praying mantis school to meet the Tai Chi instructor. Personally I think I was just a training dummy because I'm ambidextrous but I do love Shuai Jiao. But take it with a grain of salt because I'm biased. 😊
Uchimakikomi has to be a sutemi waza? I do it all the time tachi and sutemi. Great video, as usual, Chadi. Not being a sport Judoka, I didn't know about Sukuinage not being allowed in sport Judo. We've come across at least 7 variations of this over the years, all street-worthy.
So before wrestlers were topless when doing Shanxi wrestling, and they are very good at single/double leg takedowns, which was largely adopted by Beijing style wrestling (shuaijiao)
And the winner will get a goat as the prize, that is why Shanxi shuaijiao is called 挠羊跤 NaoYangJiao. Nao means "carry", Yang means "goat or sheep", Jiao means "wrestling".

Im looking for a reference book or books for Japanese grappling techniques. Im interested in all forms of Japanese and Okinawan grappling, but I have a particular interest in Judo, Aikido, Jujutsu, and Sumo/Sumai. Im wondering if you have any recommendations. As to my preference, I would probably say the more techniques the better. But I would also like books that have a sort of cohesive progression of techniques in the book, to give it a sort of narrative. I would also be interested in any books on Chinese and surrounding area's grappling. Books on Chin Na, Shuai Jiao etc. And any books covering indigenous grappling styles from around the world. Hi Chadi, really enjoyed your video! This reminds me of a style of wrestling from Siberia called Khapsagai (Хапсагай). Its a little different in that you lose the match if any part of your body other than your feet touch the mat. In that regard its a lot like sumo, but they use leg attacks like shuai jiao or american folkstyle. I would love to hear your thoughts on some of the techniques as many end up looking quite similar to some judo throws due to the ruleset. Thanks for making such great grappling content!

Great video, but I dislike the practice of equating these techniques to Judo techniques and calling them by Judo names. There is so much irrational bigotry and prejudice against Chinese martial arts & many people already accuse Shuai Jiao of being a substandard copy of Judo (even though that’s ridiculous).

I study an unknown form of Piguazhang with judo and shuaijiao techniques all through the form spotted some techniques here in the form too, nice study
