It's well understood now that it takes two factors to make someone like that - genetics / physiology, (such as head injury) mixed with trauma. 'Nature loads the gun but nurture pulls the trigger'. Secondly, these things aren't 'excuses'. They're reasons for why the 'trigger' was pulled in the loaded gun. For people interested in further listening, I'd strongly recommend the podcast 'Making a monster' where the psychologists who treated notorious British killer Robert Maudsley (part inspiration for Hannibal Lector) talks about him. He said that Maudsley was like so many others who had had traumatic childhoods (and this applies to many people, not just criminals). They become stuck in the moment and constantly try and reclaim, re-write and re-live their pasts, but this time with them in control. In Maudsley's mind, the abuse he suffered as a child wasn't happening 50 years ago, it was happening NOW and he was still the vulnerable angry child, lashing out. The psychologist said a lot of his therapy involved getting Maudsley to look into a mirror he'd brought with him - to get him to know that he was no longer the helpless child who was being abused by his parents. He was now a fully grown man and they couldn't hurt him any more. It underlines what trauma does to people, often in very subtle ways. It traps them in the moment, leaves them stunted, constantly re-living it and seeking to re-write it. It's known in psychology as 'repetition compulsion' - it goes some way to explaining too why some people keep going back to destructive relationships.
I can only agree if that therapy can beat them to the "chase".What I think is absolutely absurd. Is releasing these people because some ahole in a doctors suit thinks they are no longer a threat to society. I can't see someone who methodically ended someone's life get a "second chance", regardless of the underlying issues.

I’m not a big fan of the police, but when it comes to murder investigations and sexual crimes, they have all of my support. Sheriff Dave Reichart is a major bad ass. He does a great job in his interrogation!
Reichart and the whole task force were incompetent as hell. They should've had Ridgway in the mid-80s had they gotten off their lazy butts. If it wasn't for DNA, Ridgway and his wife would still be enjoying a quiet retirement.
Sorry, I’d have to disagree. One fact: Gary had a “dumping ground” and his first wife led detectives there because that is where Gary wanted to have sex with her. So, did the police stake out that dumping ground? No. He even went back to the same locations and had sex with the corpses. But he was never caught in the act. Weird. I will say, the cops stuck with the case, but not with a stellar performance. Although, if it were up to Detective Matt Haney, Ridgeway would have been arrested in the 80s, but that task force officers and lead investigators dismissed and ignored his suggestions. So Gary kept on killing, as he said, “Because I could get away with it.”
The ppl that catch these serial killers are you usually the sheriff "andy taylors " or "barneys " of the world , not the highly paid FBI type guys(they only want to protect thier jobs, the only interest they have ) , thats why im not a fan of the law .
The real disturbing thing is his attraction to his mother... The bond is extremely important for a child with their mother and father. Scary to think what young kids see in their mothers of today's world of only fans and social media.
He was trying to connect with her. She was so emotionally and probably physically removed from him that his brain began to fantasise about the most intimate act of all in order to equalise the pain he felt from that rejection.
His mother did not help. According to interviews, she often dressed provocatively. She bathed him even when he was in his teens. Also, she was very verbally and even physically violent towards his father, who never stood up for himself. I think Gary had issues, but if he had decent parents, I think he would have learned new tools for expressing his emotions.
I was living in a receiving home in the CD District...My caseworker at CPS warned me of the dangers and informed me a girl or my age was killed under his watch by the green river killer....this didn't detour me from Hitchhiking from the CD district to Bellevue....at least that was my intention, My friend Laquita was picked up first....(she was only hitchiking to Renton) and after what seemed like forever, a car came to a halt in front of me.Of couse I eagerly jumped in the car....and as I remember it this is what happend. The first thing that pops in my mind is the sound of him locking my door from his side. He proceeded to tell me "make yourself comfortable becuase your'e not going anywhere, take it easy and sit tight.Additionally he said that I could help myself to a beer in the globe box. Please understand me...at this point I realized the severity of the situation, My survival insticts kicked in immediately....I looked him straight in the eyes and although I don't remember the exact words I used...it went something like"Hey dude whats wrong with you? I wanna have fun, I am relaxed....lets get this party started. (In reality I was so fucking scared you have no idea!) I kicked backthe seat in this old model car and I did my best to look like a girl with no worries in the world, I remember him driving around the block 2-4 times....notably frusterated . Sorry the small talk I dont remember....what I do remember is the irritation that came upon him suddenly...He was flustered. He said " You have no idea how lucky you are today, I am going to stop, let you out and give you 5 $. and you are going to run as fast as you can before I regret the decision to let you go.... (apologies - this is the first time I have spoken of this trauma)
I had a similar thing happen to me only it was a guy posing as a taxi driver. He had a yellow cab with all the decals and even a taxi meter. It’s a long story, but I survived and the police who investigated said the guy must’ve bought the car at a police auction and I’m extremely lucky to be alive. I strongly believe that I’m alive today because I chose not to panic at all. I pretended to be the guy’s friend and even his damn therapist finally convincing him that I’d go on a date with him the following weekend if he’d just take me home. My ordeal lasted several hours and was very terrifying but he finally let me go. I had him drop me off near my neighborhood. I ran and hid in someone’s yard until I knew he was gone (he kept circling the street). As soon as it was safe, I ran home as fast as I could and called the police. As far as I know, they never made an arrest. They believe I was a test run. I hope to God he’s not still out there kidnapping and, by now, hurting/killing young women. You and I are very lucky to be alive because we chose not to react even though we were scared out of our minds! It pays to be smart.
He will write you back, but he will not engage in any kind of conversation let alone his case. He will send you some sort of bible study thing and encourages you to go with Christ. He signs the letter but it’s bizarre to go to your mailbox and a letter preaching the gospel from Gary Ridgway. Kinda like. Welllllll my good sir; I thought a guy who killed about 100 women would be a little harder than that
The estimated murder cost is transferable, DeLisi says: Any murder, anywhere in the country, costs society somewhere on the order of $17 million. That means the worst offender in the Iowa State study, convicted of nine killings, imposed a $153 million cost on society. The 48 convicted murders of Gary Ridgway, perhaps the most prolific American murderer currently in prison, cost the country $816 million and still rising.
A dozen of forensic psychologists and criminologists and whoever more in this video and I believe they're all seeing too much in his anger towards his mother, sexual frustration blablabla. Many people experience these feelings, but fortunately only a very small percentage turn into becoming a serial killer. These people 'just' have their brains wired differently. Unfortunate for them because they cannot control their urges (like most of us) and they end up in jail or on death row, but unimaginable much more unfortunate for their victims who must have suffered horribly and their families who have suffered such great losses.
I think it’s so weird that Gary Ridgway and Green River have the same initials. I wonder if this was intentional by him as a kind of hint to investigators.
No, because he didn't name himself. The press named him. He didn't interact with police or media at all while he was active, unlike many did.... son of Sam, btk, etc... they both declared their own names to the media.
It is puzzling that those experts can talk about somebody like Ridgway with such certainty. I believe this level of understanding somebody is possible only with extreme empathy and an ability to put oneself in his shoes so to speak. It seems more like they create a label, and from that moment, Ridgway is no longer a complex individual but a generalized theoretical concept. However, I am aware that this opinion of mine is strongly influenced by my frustrating experiences with psychiatry where a person becomes a dehumanized diagnosis, and is treated that way.
I agree with most of this. Except, the psychology industry wasn't dehumanizing Ridgway. When he brutally murdered a young woman and dumped her body in the river, he dehumanized himself.
@jacquesdemolay4516 You make no sense. I am not demonic. We are all sinners in need of Christ, but I am redeemed by Him, so I am not the same as Ridgway. I am a sinner, but I am not demonic, like he is. You make no sense.

No, these guys paint him as manipulative and cunning. All this stiff. Ridgway was dumb as a stump and knew the basics of what a grade 10er would know about forensics. Serial killers are very tough to detect, common sense tells em to wear gloves or not leave blood or avoid being seen picking someone up. That in a nutshell is all you need to do.
I wouldn't say in a nutshell lol. Avoid getting into picking people up that you've been known to frequent with or around. Avoid being seen by anyone else that knows the you both. Avoid doing so with your own vehicle. Avoid doing so, in broad daylight around surveillance areas like intersections, schools, or certain surveilled parking lots that are almost empty. Scout the area out previously. Run through the playbook weeks, maybe even months in advance to understand the area and the people and how they go about on a daily basis so no surprises. Never bring them back to a place where you wouldn't want them to be in any other situation. Tape the bottoms of your shoes to prevent making impressions wherever you're stepping. Dont use sharp objects as they're messy. Dont use firearms unless you're out in a wilderness area not associated with any trail cams or national park service, and lastly, always have your means of disposal properly set up. You never want to just dispose on a whim. You should already know where and what you're going to do. Those are just a few things. Gloves are always a go to. Never, ever go to the spot twice. Its not really a nutshell kind of thing. People that think its in a nutshell, end up on these shows. Allegedly of course
Its nearly impossible to do that today if you're living in a city or somewhere where the populace is naturally going to have ring cams, trail cams, or anything of the sort. If i were to ever try something like that, it wouldn't be on a wim. You can do that if you live out in wilderness areas. Typically there's not going to be trail cameras or anything of the like the further out you go. Simply dumping someone on the side of a road, is a means to getting caught. That's not smart. Committing murder period isn't smart lol. I would never consider doing something like that. It used to be one of the easiest crimes to get away with. Today, i would venture to say absolutely not.
Could you imagine if cell phones existed? He surely would have forgot to not bring his with him, considering is menial intelligence. He would have been caught alot faster today.
I don't think he's a Mr nobody.. not with the amount of documentaries there are about him.. it's a double edge sword.. people are interested in the real life monsters, but that also makes sick people seek out infamy like it... We do need to learn from them, but we can't idolize them.. sick and talentless people will look killing being an easy way to fame...
This is the first documentary of a serial killer I have seen that acknowledges the extent of how a killer’s relationship with his mother turned him into a murderer. I have been saying this for a long time that the relationship they have with their parents is a prime source for their behaviour. Serial killers are a product of their childhoods. Thought it was strange that though these issues were generally mentioned even in other serial killers’ documentaries, none looked at this issue more closely in their cases.
Or they are narcicist blaming someone else for their actions. His mother wanted his to do better in school? Oh what a terrible woman. Not all serial killers come from abusive families. But they are all narcict , cons, manipulators, they say what you want to hear, and blame others. 😁
He doesn't understand nor accept responsibility for his sadistic sexual urges and looks to blame it on his Mom, rather than accept that he was born a monster. Everybody wants to make sense and nobody wants to think of themselves as a defective unit.
Because we also talk about the less impressive parts of his life. Like being a bet wetter through most of his childhood. He can't control the way we talk about him, and that makes him a Mr. Nobody, even though we remember his name.
Listen to him, not the others he fits the bill of serial killer, it starts with small animals, he killed the family cat, he stab a 6 year old when he was 14. His mother is nasty and wrong on so many levels. She made this monster
What? He left the bodies by the river and the river are great places to leave bodies? Out of 49-70 he killed, he left 5 by the river. 3 of those bodies are the ones that contained the dna that got him caught. If he didn't leave those 3 bodies by the river he might still be active.
In 1979 my sister and I cross the line to stay the weekend at our friend's trailer in Lake Sammamish. We took the canoe out and had to stop at the community Hall. Police and people were running around, so didn't stay. When we got back to Vancouver, found out it was Ted Bundy. My sister in law told me her brother Grant Frederickson ( a White Rock D.J.) helped by taken up funds to keep the investigation & open & was caught shortly after. I use to see Robert Picton every Friday, when I use to pick up my I.L.W.U. husband at the Astoria Hotel in the 90's. He also claimed to have killed 49 & was hoping to make 50. 😥 A family member worked DTES Women's Association, and lost 80% of her client's.
Eh. If she wasn’t a hooker she was fine. Ted was in Florida state prison in 79 and Gary was 3 years away from killing hookers. I don’t believe stories from people “oh Ted Bundy approached my (insert relative)” it’s really silly bullshit

The actor isn’t anything like Gary Ridgway. Gary had a welcoming smile and was very gracious to all his interrogators. He camouflaged his evil internal self, I think, even to the extent of receiving HIS sentence. How or why on earth should a career MURDERER make a “plea deal” to save HIS life??? What type of justice is that?
To get closure and info for the family and to study for science it's not very often you get this and it also helps keep most of the info out of public view so he could of done it for his own family to not make a spectacul cause if it goes to trial than everything becomes public knowledge it's an incentive to get them to talk when they otherwise likely wouldn't
He killed 2 of my friends. Me and another friend were standing in the yard just chit chatting. She needed money to help get her younger siblings food n what not. She left. Never seen her again. Alive. 😢 we seen pics of her when the detectives/task forse came around. I think he should of been hurt every day of his life. Wonder how did his son turned out?.
This comment section is certainly, um, interesting. Everything from low grade trolls to psych inpatients on the unit computer running the clock until their next dose of meds.
It's very puzzling that so many teens took this route and didn't make it For those who did what did they do different?..... What was some of resdon ppl ran away in those days was it really that bad at home and what was the lure to the streets? Drugs, music?.sex, rebellion. Angst? Was the harsh realities known of the dangers lurking??
They were probably unaware of the dangers of the area. No cell phone, no internet, and the news was only on 1 channel for 1 hour. Ridgeway's 3rd wife had never even heard of the green river killer. As far as why there were runaways, they were being raised by young boomers lol
This guy was operating for nearly 20 years yet went unnoticed.I can't help feeling something wrong with the guys who were suppose to catch him, surely at one stage or another something should have been apparent.
@@OGRuth I agree. All the serial killers we hear about now all happened in the 50's to the 90's, or around that time. It's probably almost impossible to operate the way they did with today's technology and forensics. Hopefully, the super scary killers that get away with it for so long are a little bit a thing of the past.
I lived in greenwater back then and one morning on my way down a mile above mud mountain dam I felt a spirit of a girl going over or around my car . If I had it over I would have contacted the task force . To find out if it liner up with a missing person .
Ridgeway is def a psychopath. I studied behavioral neuroscience and Ridgeway fits profile of a sexual sadist, the worst kind of a psychopath. Lady who claims he is not a psychopath either doesn't understand the subject well or this program was made a while ago when they were still defining what a sexual sadist is.
The BS about his mother being looked at by him as a sex object is probably the biggest nonsense he could possibly utter.... He probably looked up some stuff about psychology, related to killers and spun his story around that. It's a big weakness of normal people and empaths to have that reflex of thinking that evil has a source in a person's past, which made him/her as the evil they are. And in many cases there are such circumstances... it's just, in just as many cases there were no such conditions. It's important i think for any psychologist or detective to see if there is factual truth about abuse in their past, or derailed fantasies ( medical, psychological reports from childhood or so). If there's no such evidence to find, you can count on it they are playing everyone.
He’s wrong about something .. he said he liked killing . No . He was very nice to everyone else . I speak to him frequently and we have become friends ( over the phone ). He is not a monster . He’s a really nice man ( if you met him at a bbq you would say the same ) . There were horrible things that happened to him starting with his childhood that led him to kill prostitutes . By no means am I saying it was right . There are reasons though . He reads the Bible now every day and is well informed with current events etc . I’d personally feel safe with him . Please don’t hate on me for seeing the good in someone who did things he has asked God forgiveness for .
He also stopped for the most part when he married his 3rd wife . I disagree with these criminologists . I have been speaking to him for 3 years a couple times a week . I disagree with some of their assessments .
I am sure there is alot yes abuse is a major factor but he killed teenage girls pregnant women. I am reading about the case since I work in the area and drive around the area all the time. It's so sad he didn't get the help he needed when he was a child with his learn disability and abuse. I am sure he would have been a different person if he got the help he needed
Never fails to make me laugh..."cutting edge lip sync technology...". You really need to explain just what that is, my dude. Also, Ridgway did not "bury his victims" They were left in the open air, up and down the river. It's why they were found, in the first place. Basic research, Prof.
Some were actually buried in shallow graves, and only a handful of victims were left by or in Green River. After they found the first 3 bodies (IIRC there were 2 more along the river) he started dumping them elsewhere in clusters of 3-5 bodies generally.
Re the lip syncing... I think they bounced the camera around during the interviews so we couldn't tell if they were doing a good job or not. I'll bet Bad Lip Reading could do a thing with this if it wasn't so tragic.
People say he sounds normal but im sorry, maybe im just hyper sensitive but if i heard a voice like that I'd know immediately somethings up, and run. 🏃♀️

You wasted your time on this trash. Ridgway was forced into false confessions and solid real evidence proves cops tampered with evidence and forced false confessions under threat from Ridgway - he never told cops where victims were because they found them first alone based on logic with no help at all from Ridgway - they had a plan and it worked. They framed Ridgway with no question about it. The murderer never stopped with Ridgway's arrest and official Green River skeletal remains were put on public display by the real killer while Ridgway was in prison. Wake up to orality and save your bias for someone else. Facts and evidence learned as a result of one missing girl's case out of Puyallup, WA demonstrates very clearly that Gary Ridgway IS NOT The Green River Killer. See how police tampered with evidence, lied profoundly and manipulated Gary Ridgway into false confessions. See how David Reichert and former Det. Tom Jensen found official Green River victims while Ridgway sat in jail and with no help from Ridgway at all but then made it only appear s though he told them where to look to be sure to con the prosecutor into acceptant his false confessions. See the truth of the real Green River killer and see how much he looked like Gary Ridgway - people easily confused one for the other with poor 20 year old memories. . . Fact is they framed Ridgway. Are there going to be any videos of Gary confessing in your confession titled show?....
No shit right
I’m not a big fan of the police, but when it comes to murder investigations and sexual crimes, they have all of my support.
So you are a fan then.
The real disturbing thing is his attraction to his mother...
The bond is extremely important for a child with their mother and father.
Scary to think what young kids see in their mothers of today's world of only fans and social media.
I would say easily 90%+ of issues with kids and society is down to bad parenting. This includes serial killers.

Nurture or nature
That is still open for debate. Very Interesting though 👌
He was trying to connect with her. She was so emotionally and probably physically removed from him that his brain began to fantasise about the most intimate act of all in order to equalise the pain he felt from that rejection.
I think the absence of real FATHER'S (not just sperm donors) in the home is a bigger problem that whether or not a boy gets turned on by his mother.
I’ve always felt that Ridgeway was the most prolific serial killer in the United States.
And you’re claiming it was this man?
He will write you back, but he will not engage in any kind of conversation let alone his case. He will send you some sort of bible study thing and encourages you to go with Christ. He signs the letter but it’s bizarre to go to your mailbox and a letter preaching the gospel from Gary Ridgway. Kinda like. Welllllll my good sir; I thought a guy who killed about 100 women would be a little harder than that
Lmfao!!
Talk about prostitution and see how he responds then!
How u come up with 17m
A dozen of forensic psychologists and criminologists and whoever more in this video and I believe they're all seeing too much in his anger towards his mother, sexual frustration blablabla. Many people experience these feelings, but fortunately only a very small percentage turn into becoming a serial killer. These people 'just' have their brains wired differently. Unfortunate for them because they cannot control their urges (like most of us) and they end up in jail or on death row, but unimaginable much more unfortunate for their victims who must have suffered horribly and their families who have suffered such great losses.
These are brilliant iv watched a few glad I found them as I typed in David Wilson as I'm a fan of him got a few of his books ect
My older sisters went to school with two of the victims so sad , they were teenagers

I just bought it the other day, had to put it down for a few days because I was trying not to cry.
A “Mr. Nobody” ? The fact you are doing a documentary of him, along with hundreds more makes him a “somebody”.
Well he could have chose the green river area because of the initials. I agree with Rachel. That is way too coincidental. @@SWpurgatory
If Ned Flanders was a serial killer

We do need to learn from them, but we can't idolize them.. sick and talentless people will look killing being an easy way to fame...
The guy portraying Ridgway has a smart phone in his back pocket. In the mid-1980s!

Ted, Ed & John addressed issues/non issues with their parents
Not sure if this applies to Jeffrey Dahmer
no shit, sherlock!?
Or they are narcicist blaming someone else for their actions. His mother wanted his to do better in school? Oh what a terrible woman. Not all serial killers come from abusive families. But they are all narcict , cons, manipulators, they say what you want to hear, and blame others. 😁
They all mostly say that
He doesn't understand nor accept responsibility for his sadistic sexual urges and looks to blame it on his Mom, rather than accept that he was born a monster.
Everybody wants to make sense and nobody wants to think of themselves as a defective unit.
How is he a Mr. Nobody when years later, he's still very much notorious and a subject in various topics?
The good professor once filmed a bit just outside my kitchen window, after Joanna Dennehy got all stabby.
Grant keep Ridgeways investigation.
Bundy was in prison in ‘79 in Florida
Eh. If she wasn’t a hooker she was fine. Ted was in Florida state prison in 79 and Gary was 3 years away from killing hookers.
I don’t believe stories from people “oh Ted Bundy approached my (insert relative)” it’s really silly bullshit

I wish you didn’t abbreviate so I understood what your husband was?

They were probably unaware of the dangers of the area. No cell phone, no internet, and the news was only on 1 channel for 1 hour. Ridgeway's 3rd wife had never even heard of the green river killer. As far as why there were runaways, they were being raised by young boomers lol

8:00 She is talking absolute crap.
Moustache. Square glasses. Nice guy. Run.

You really need to explain just what that is, my dude.
Also, Ridgway did not "bury his victims"
They were left in the open air, up and down the river.
