I actually really enjoyed watching Captain Spirit here. I think it feels a lot more sincere than all of Before the Storm and most of the first game. Lots of natural feeling interactions between the kid, other people, and the world. Very endearing. Not sure if Joe's perspective was poisoned by BtS (fair) or if he would've found it uninteresting regardless.
like... I wish Sean had the option to be straight with Daniel and say 'we're on the run, we need to do things like steal candy bars from abandoned cars and change from national park donation boxes because we are struggling to survive" and not "whatever, no one will care" like you're swiping it from a kid's backpack at school.
In regards to the discussion about racism around 4:55:00. There's no denial that overtly racist people exist, and I have first hand experience with them. That being said, the overwhelming majority of racism you'll face as a minority is more on a societal/systematic level, and although it is cool to see a game attack racism, they ended up taking the very vocal minority and highlighted that. They rather/can only write racist characters rather than racist people, if that makes sense.
I think worst part about LiS2 is that its world building is almost completely absent compared to the first. As even Joe mentioned, you can interact with everything and not get instantly bored in the first game. Everything is stylised. The cartoony art style and soft colour palette makes it a very homely and cozy feeling game, even when dealing with intense stuff. It feels like this game (and Before the Storm) rests on its laurels and doesn't earn it's style in any way, instead using it to cover for a lacklustre and unimaginative version of a story that has been told better in many other games and media.
So far it seems like Joe is just tired of the gameplay style. Like there was a novelty to LiS's journal. It wasn't its quality (they were ok at best, cringey at worst) so much as its novelty that kept him engaged and now he's just tired of it. Like 2 minutes into the journal he was like "you know what I don't care".
@@mechanicalmonk2020 plus this games journal just isnt as fun of a read. Theres some serious gold in Max's journal thats so cringe and so borderline psychotic that it makes for a good read. Here it's just boring average teenage stuff that's over encumbered by how seriously this gamea plot tries to take itself.
It's not a game where world building is supposed to be the main theme, you are watching charcters thrown into a wild journey and moulding their growth with your decisions - choices are not nullified by time travel here, everything matters and regardless of the story being a bit more phoned in it is one of the best choice based games ever made in regards to consequences.
@josephstewart2821 Detroit Become Human literally came out the same year and did everything you mentioned better (although both games are just as heavy handed in terms of handling political topics). This game is straight up boring lmao but it's nice to hear someone enjoyed it.
something so hilarious about this game is how comically racist the people you're not supposed to like are. Its just annoying that whenever the game presents a new character, no matter of insignificant to the story, it predetermines whether or not I should bother interacting further with said character based on how ridiculous their first line is. LiS1 never had this problem, as the characters that are dicks usually had a reason to be a dick that's revealed later in the plot. Why is the neighbor or the random dad at the gas station a dick? Game doesn't bother to explain itself because everything is one note.
I know it would have required additional animation, but it kinda annoys me that Chris just mashes his action figures together when they fight... move the damn arms and legs to do punches and kicks, what are you doing kid? XD
First Game had a time travel mechanic in a high school + broken friendship on the mend + murder mystery. Before the storm at least seemed to provide answers to questions that one might've had during the first game like what was Rachel like, what was her and Chloe's relationship like (although they never answered how Rachel ended up with drug-dealer or how the killer got her). But this game just has no hook. No interesting social interactions, the supernatural gimmick isn't even in our control and unlike the time-rewind there's no fun way we can use it in social interactions. It's just nothing + social commentary that so far boils down to "America racist except for the odd hero freelance blogger". Life is cringe AND boring
You can write a story about social issues like racism and end up with a good story but this isn’t it. Genuinely 75% of the random characters you meet in this story are literally LETHALLY racist followed by a literal saint; that really hurts your story because it requires suspension of disbelief that the story has to have earned by now OR character writing on your main cast that’s so good that you don’t even notice how blatantly cookie cutter your antagonists are
The resolution of that chapter sucked, I don't get why in any world it is the "wrong" choice to rob a couple of scumbag drug dealers who have already stolen from you.
This story would have been infinitely better if Sean knew about Daniels powers often the cop died. That would have made his decision to run away far more understandable
I remember when this was coming out you could try the demo of EP1 for free on Steam. When I got to the end of the cop shooting scene I was feeling physical pain because of how unbelievably dumb and forced it was and I ALT-F4'd then and there. Years freaking later I'm here watching this to see how joe suffers through it and by the end of this episode I can't seem to do it. The game is even worse than I imagined it🤣🤣🤣
Vran’s weren’t in Witcher books // Aen shiede and Aen aelle are from completely different spheres, Aen shiede were oppressed by humans Aen aelle are colonizers who in part were driven out of their sphere by climate change (by way of the white frost) I like his interpretation but like the separation between both spheres elves are huge
This game is absolutely appalling and not even really to the point it's laughably bad. First game had some nice representation and while it was cringe, it was quite interesting and I wanted to know what would happen.. With LiS 2 it's like.. you just *know* exactly what the people look like who they hired in between LiS 1 and LiS 2. What you're picturing is 100% correct
…. This game is not that bad. I think its interesting that ppl despise it so much, and i get that its heavy handed but that doesnt explain the consistent hatred of this game.
It's actually the best of the series if you want your choices to actually matter and influence the story but I think there's a very large gay fanbase who were alienated by the fact that the charcters in this were too straight.

You can read horrifying accounts of Pakistanis that were detained in freezing weather on the Canada border the day of the "Muslim ban". The moment I realised the guy hadn't told his kid brother that his dad was dead I immediately knew how painful this would be
