    Scale is everything - I was surprised at the size of the piece. Thx for the video.

    There's just something very mesmerizing at seeing something being created on a lathe machine like this.

    @Mirnes07 in my course we build the board and all the pieces... we did the knight on a milling
    we used copper for the dark ones and stainless for the white
    and for the board we used brass and 4140 steel (for the squares) and we build a frame with 12l14 mild steel

    They do this to show the high precision of chuck, and gentle holding of working piece. After reinserting chess bishop, positioning precission is still at high level, and we see no vibration when it rotates.

    I made several chess sets out of aluminum using square bar stock. Each 48' bar was milled using the straddle mill technique. Then the bar was turned on its side to give it that particular identification, whether it was a knight or pawn. Then each piece was cut to length, sanded to break sharp corners, polished and painted on the top signifying whether it was black or white. It is very time consuming.

    what is the farthest the human eye can see, and what is the limit mind capability of inventing and reinventing? The intelligence in this should bring us together rather than kill each other. A lovely and neat work only to bring the best product. Keep on.

  • @harryt622
    @harryt622 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you part off an aluminum piece like that there is a good chance of dinging it. It is a very large chess piece and that would really fly around if it didn't fall perfectly.

  • @smartlamppost

    This is a great video and all, but holy crap man, that background music is fricken' AWESOME!!!! Really, who'd of thought to rock out to a chess piece being constructed?

    I get to do this stuff every day at work, folks. Been a CNC Machinist for 6 years.
    We don't make Chess pieces, but we do some pretty cool parts for the company I work for. All in-house work.
    We run mostly Haas machines, with our latest addition being a DS-30SSY. Live tooling is a beautiful thing!
    Questions incoming!
    What alloy do you guys use? 6061? Looks like standard, what, 1.5 bar stock?
    Why not program it to hand off to the sub-spindle? It would save you some hands on time. :D

  • @tmcallister74
    @tmcallister74 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    A few questions.1. Why are you using a left hand turning tool? (a 35deg. RH tool should have worked) 2. Why are you conventional cutting the i.d. with the end mill 3. Why are you running the boring bar upside down.(the chips recut with the bore bar inverted)4. Why not part off and finish with sub spindle? Not that I know anything...

  • @MrReichennek
    @MrReichennek 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    This is the most conservative machining of aluminum ever. Cycle time could have been halved with proper speeds and feeds and wipers for finishing. 1000 sfm minimum with carbide.

    • @XIDED
      @XIDED 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You realize several parts of the video were slowed down considerably to allow for better viewing?

    • @MrReichennek
      @MrReichennek 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      XIDED I was simply saying that the stated speeds where very conservative at the beginning of the video, just seems if they wanted to showcase their tools they'd state higher speeds.

    • @MrReichennek
      @MrReichennek 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** true, but the set up cost for casting means it's in a league of its own. You can't compare machining to casting, but you can machine better.

    • @ydna
      @ydna 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lucas Reichennek FYI it's kennametal tooling (glacern doesn't make tools). wipers won't help with curved profiles, but larger tool radii would do the trick.

    Like the engraving capability, this video might just persuade our MD to invest in retro-fitting power feed to our old Cincinnati Hawk 150. As a matter of interest why remove the piece, saw it off then machine the bottom instead of just parting it off, not the best finish but who's going to see it ?

    Hello, in school we were asigned to make our own project, it could be anything. So i searched youtube for CNC art and found this, i then showed the video to my friend that i was going to do the project with and he thought we shoud do our own chess board with the chess pieces deisgned in CNC. We figured out how to do all pieces except the knight.. So i was wondering if you could share some tips and tricks in regards to making the knight. Btw, nice video :)

    That's coolant. Keeps your tools from burning up. The fact that he ran this part dry, for the purposes of recording this video, means he doesn't mind shaving considerable tool life off of his tools and inserts. :P

  • @TerreurTerence
    @TerreurTerence 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    How much pressure are you applying on the soft chucks to grip the head of the piece? Since its aluminum and can easely lose its shape and grip if there is applied too much pressure on it?

    When working with metal, not a single gram goes to waste. We manufacturer around 10,000 tools a year in our small work shop and from that we barrel about 2 tonnes of filings etc. All goes to the scrappy and pays for a Christmas dinner for the staff.

    • @pengasus

      You can buy Italfama chess pieces. High end ones are made out of brass and nickel coated brass. Just a heads up though, they are EXPENSIVE!
      Just an example, a set with a 4.5" king is around $1,300

    • @FluffMuncher

      FluffMuncher I already have a brass set so i'll pass on that offer :) But you can machine a set and put a $10,000 tag on it if you wish. That doesn't mean someone will buy it though. I have a video of the chess set i'm talking about on my channel if you want to have a look at it.
