Sultans of swing from alchemy live is even better than the album version. You HAVE to see it.
YES!!!!!
The Alchemy version is a good indication of how they progressed as musicians and as a cohesive unit. Well worth the visit.
They are different, original sounds more edgy, love Pick's snare work on the original, Alchemy its heavier ... like both.
Yes its a must
the guitarplay and drums are better yes, but the Vocals are much better on the Old grey whistle test version :) i wish this would have "better" vocals, i hate when Mark swallows his words like he does in the alchemy version , that being said the guitarplay and drums in the Alchemy version are OUT OF THIS WORLD
The live version of Syltans of Swing from the Alchemy tour is something else! Can recommend that...
This. The Alchemy Live version is on a completely different level!
Agree
the guitarplay and drums are better yes, but the Vocals are much better on the Old grey whistle test version :) i wish this would have "better" vocals, i hate when Mark swallows his words like he does in the alchemy version , that being said the guitarplay and drums in the Alchemy version are OUT OF THIS WORLD
oh my gosh YEEESS!!! Mindblowing performance with unmatched live energy!!!!
This song is about ‘a specific incident’ where mark Knopfler (singer and guitarist) went into a pub to get out of the rain and saw a distinctly average pub band. As others have said the live version from alchemy is truly brilliant 10 minutes of pure joy. Mark is a top 5 guitarist of all time for me and my favourite.
A pub in Deptford South East London
Brothers in Arms is a haunting, beautiful, poignant song, one of Dire Straits best.
"Trad Jazz" the British term for Dixieland and Swing Jazz was huge in England in the fifties and sixties, and had a major impact on the emergence of the British Blues scene. By the time Knopfler wrote this song in the late seventies its influence and popularity had faded. What he's describing here is a group of aging, part-time musicians that play in pubs on the weekends because they just love the music. Hence there's an element of irony in the fact that they refer to themselves as the "Sultans of Swing."
I will forever love this song. One of if not my favorite clean guitar solos of all time.
Not just the solo. The back and forth between the vocals and the guitar are pure magic.
🎸💯 Mark Knopfler is another 🐐 guitarist‼🔥
"Sultans of Swing" is such a cool vibe‼ Thanks for this reaction‼☮ ❤ 🎶
Dire Straights was part of the soundtrack of my youth. absolutely love this band
funny how this tune tells 2 stories, one by lyric other by guitar, one of my favorite tunes for that very reason
Yes, it's a story -- a true story. I've seen Mark Knopfler tell it, and it's basically word-for-word the song. How someone can take a real-life event -- just a little thing that happened one night -- and make it into such a classic... It started raining and he and friends slipped into a little dive bar to stay dry, and they were stunned with the amazing band. Just some guys who play on the weekends.I'm glad you found this one!
The story is about a band called the sultans of swing that played in pubs and music venues of London.
To add
Knophler is one of the greatest guitarist to ever live
Next thing from Dire Straits? Brothers in arms. No question.
The Alchemy Live version is a must watch.
the guitarplay and drums are better yes, but the Vocals are much better on the Old grey whistle test version :) i wish this would have "better" vocals, i hate when Mark swallows his words like he does in the alchemy version , that being said the guitarplay and drums in the Alchemy version are OUT OF THIS WORLD
Such an underrated band, and a timeless song to boot.
They weren'that underrated. Come on now....
They are very, VERY highly rated by pretty much everyone who knows anything about contemporary music.
He is referring to their time touring in Northern UK, hearing dixie land and jazz bands as their competition for gigs in the area. London is way down there.
He grew up in the same general area as Brian Johnson, Angus and Malcolm Young who were all born in Newcastle and the Glasgow area. Bon Scott also was born in Scotland.
I love this band. I nearly wore out the 8-track back in the day. It's so hard to recommend what to listen to next, given their amazing catalog. Telegraph Road is an beautiful, musical story of the history of road in Detroit, Michigan. Romeo and Juliet is incredible. Frankly, you could pick something at random and not find a dud in the lot.
No L, you've got to watch the Alchemy Live version of this song!!! It's 10 minutes long, but probably the greatest live performance of all-time!!
Ditto on the Alchemy Live version of this. It's certainly in the top 10 live rock performances of all time.
Mark Knopfler(vocals and guitar) actually has a dinosaur named after him. The archaeologist who discovered it was a huge fan and was listening to him when he found it.
"And the band played creole" Great song, great band. Thanks mark !
ALCAMY LIVE TOUR of this is worth another listen JUST to hear the AMAZING four minute outro!
Same ALCAMY LIVE version of TELEGRAPH ROAD!❤
Greets ! He is referring to SOUTH LONDON, which is traditionally the working class part of London. ( as well as the east is ) and he is talking about hearing a jazz band playing when he lived there in 60s. Yes, London has jazz ! Knopfler hiself is from Newcastle not London. Though in his day, if you wand to be connected to any success in music, you had to move to London to get recognised. Hence there was a healthy music scene of all sorts of people and styles. Not so many years back, taxi drivers would refuse to go "south of the river" after dark. As it was a bit more sketchy.
I've been listening to this song on repeat, incredible vibe. So carefree
Alchemy live is a must watch!
It was a humours situation, band thought they were "The Sultans of Swing" but were anything but that apparently, it was tongue in cheek.
Hahaha. That look on your face when he said "you hear the jazz"
One of the most beautiful songs of all time, just pleasant as all get out
Direstraits one of the best bands in The early 70..They became huges all over the world with this song. You could hear this everywhere in 1978 and still..Thank you for reacting to this amazing band.
This song came out on their debut album in 1978, they were mainly an 80s band.
Mark Koffler.... Brilliant & unique. No else does it like him. He goes back to my youth, & I am 63. Great reaction. :)
Yes, amazing song. As others have said, do Alchemy version too.
Romeo & Juliet is their best song I think. Love song of a sort.
Alchemy live version of this song will blow your mind
I think he wants to invoke southern US after the jazz / Dixie references then cheekily adds London Town, which is in the south of England.
The ''George" they refer too.....is George Young. Angus and Malcome's older brother....and the guy that taught them both guitar. ...he knows all the chords.
That's AC/DC ? not Dire Straits?
@zippybanana2691 Guitar George in the Dire Straits' song, in fact, does refer to AC/DC's Angus and Malcolm's brother George Young.
You really need to do the alchemy verson! Greatest performances ever imo
American Jazz was wildly popular in London, Paris and Berlin !!
This was one of their original songs from 1977. The reference to "down south, London town" could be because the guitarists were originally from Newcastle in the north of England and had moved south to London to form the band. Or it may refer to the fact that the band were based in Deptford, south of the river Thames in London and listened to any live music in that area.
In the beginning of the song he mentions that he is “south of the river”. This is a reference to the Thames which divides London into two distinct areas. I always thought that the reference to “way on down south, London Town” was thus a bit of a dig at the fact that the Sultans were playing southernAmerican music in the less than fashionable South London.
Love this record! Dire Straits Brothers In Arms album is a masterpiece from start to finish
Most of the old blues and jazz musicians, even in the 1940s, toured Europe.
Louis Armstrong from 50s. This band also does Plày the guitar on the MTV. Weird Al did parody about Beverly Hillbillies. Lead guitar gave permission às long he played on the record
You're the first reactor to pick up on my favourite line in this - "way on down south ... London town". It's such a cute gag.
I think you might like Romeo and Juliet; Tunnel of Love; or brothers In Arms, all 3 are story telling songs.
I keep coming back to this mr L , it’s one of my favourite songs and I love to watch you genuinely vibing of it 😎👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼.
Thanks
Paul uk 🇬🇧
The recorded version is wonderful also. Loved the fact that you really thought about the lyrics and pointed out meta nature of the song ala Sgt. Pepper. Never really thought of it that way.
Such brilliant musicians.
Musicians love this song, because they identify with it, methinks
This is one of my all time favorites. The instrumentation changes every line and the drummer and guitar bounce off each other so interestingly
Mark is from the North-East of England, thus tells us 'way on down South, London town'. Alternatively he could mean 'South London' with it's negative, unfashionable connotations!
To get a sense of the range and talent of this band you should do Telegraph Road from Alchemy Live.
Alchemy live its up there in the all time great live performances.
The band he was talking about was playing in front of a small crowd on a rainy night. They called themselves the sultans of swing. Mark thought it was funny that they called themselves the sultans, seeing as how they were playing in front of such a small crowd.
I just always love your content!
ALCHEMY live version now....you won't be disappointed
checkin in ,luvin the vids and content
Dire Straights "Brothers. in Arms"
I never understood 'blowing Dixie' that way before. Thank you 🙂👍
The Old Grey Whistle Test was one of the rare TV shows that had the bands perform live sets (or recorded them live) rather than lip syncing to the studio version. This was a UK show, another example is the German show Beat Club.
Said in an interview they we're influenced alot by the southern American sound...u can hear it in this one
The alchemy version will blow your mind!
Any other live version of this classic is Awesome
Such great soundscapes painters. Their album Love Over Gold is one of the few albums that I have collected in over fifty years, that I can listen to completely.
Absolute masters
when mrlboyd likes something, he makes a proud face
Think the “way down south in London Town” phrase was an acknowledgement of both his influences as well as his national origin.
He’d be the first to say that his music came directly from southern jazz, blues, soul and gospel.
Dire Straits are British. Mark Knopfler is from Newcastle. London is 'down south' to him.
All English.
There's all sorts of references and symbolism going on in 'Sultans of Swing'. For instance, prominent songwriters/producers Vanda and Young appear as "Guitar George" (George Young, elder brother of AC/DC's Angus and Malcolm Young) and "Harry" (Henry Vanda).
If you are into guitar, you should continue to listen to this band live.
You should just listen to Mark Knopfler period. Live or studio, with or without Dire Straits his work is beautiful.
Not bad for a live version, but missing some lyrics from the studio version. At least we get an outro solo which was cut from the shorter radio version.
Knopfler.
You would love
“Romeo & Juliet”
,Brothers in Arms is definitely one you should check out 😉
It's more of a contemporary story he's telling, not in the distant past. This version is missing a verse about a "crowd of young boys" in the corner who "don't give a damn about any trumpet playing band. It ain't what they call rock and roll."
Brothers in Arms!
This is an amazing and intelligent reaction
I never tire of this song.
Ladies and gentlemen, the one and only Mark Knopfler and band. On a level of their own for sure.
A classic, so good on good speakers or phones
iconic jam this
There a north UK band playing in the south: London.
Next definitely “Brothers In Arms”!
This guitar!!
The really amazing thing is that he finger plays everything..
South London has bands. Ooorah!
Awesome ❤️🔥
🇨🇦 Honestly thought you had already reacted to this !
There is a longer version that is also quite nice.
Live Alchemy version good as well
They are from the north of england which is why London is down south
If you like or are interested in guitar, you should listen to the dire straits concert recording.
mark knopfler is a very special guitarist...
American soldiers of the darker persuasion, brought Jazz too Europe during WW1🙂
This maybe in my too 10 of all time
Listen to their song Romeo and Juliet. Amazing song.
This is the second time I've seen this particular version, .a nother version has a entire extra verse, I don't know why it's not in this one , it may be a early version ,a work in progress perhaps, the missing verse , references that the music they play is Creole,
Recomend their song "Industrial Disease" not their biggest hit but a great song.
I heard the song in the radio in 1979 when I was 16. I was lying on the sofa reading the Lord of the Rings. The next day I bought the album. Dire Straits became one of my favourite bands until today.
Why... what happened today to make them not one of your favourite bands?
@@JohnWilson-cs7iq Bad english? Sorry for that. It's not my native language. They are still today on of my favourite bands.
Not a word song, more an instrumental song to enjoy.
My personal recommendation would be "Brothers in Arms"
Great reaction MRLBOYD
You should listen to 'twisting by the pool', 'solid rock', 'two young lovers'
by dire straights.
Walk Of Life by Dire Straits would be my suggestion for your next listen.
They're from London England.
I don't think I have ever seen someone not start moving to the beat of this song lol
Check out telegraph road. There is an amazing live version that takes you on an incredible journey
My absent father, ok, felt that Dire Straits was the best band ever, hmmm, ok, hmmmm, ok, guys, yea, hmmm, yeah, so I like rebelled against them, hmmm ok, right.
