As you've already read so many times the new starter is actually a pretty good starter it's called a gear reduction starter that uses less mass than the old bulky one. it's way more efficient. But I've never seen one on a diesel I've only seen them on gas burners so that might be a difference because diesels have so much more compression
Nice work on the starter motor. I've just replaced the starter on my motorbike. It's a BMW R1200R, a flat-twin which always seemed to take a hell of a lot of battery power to start. Anyhow, the owner of a local bike shop has the same bike and listening to mine he said, "You've got a lazy starter motor. Unless you can recondition it you need a new one." Well, replacements came in about four prices, reflecting various levels of quality. I chose the most expensive and it has transformed the bike. I don't need to keep the battery on a drip feed any more. The original on your boat is a high quality unit, the replacement a cheap one: you did well to combine the best of both!
G,day from Sydney Australia. Very uplifting show, * That was very good analytical thinking with the starter. The modular adaption of the solinode (old to new) and inspection of quality/condition. * I've been coating and lubricating my engine with silicone spray (salt environment) for six months: no corrosion, seal leaks and displaces carbon. 🌏🇦🇺
Exactly ..... tore apart a brand new high torque starter.... smh kids these days what do they learn growing up.... lol "magnetic switch" go ask for that at a parts store 🤣🤣🤣
"Precious", way too go Travis! Nice view of the Bay and Beach, yep, good way to cool off. The main difference of the starter is the old one is a Marine grade, other Automotive. Both Solenoids are sealed, so Ok there. Funny Travis, you wish it was that big..lol. Nice views of USVI
Love the sailing food combo! Just watched a live stream for how to sail and they were interviewing a hunter owner that gave you guys a shout out, he’s a fan too. Love seeing us Canadians doing so well out in TH-cam land! Cheers.
@@SailingJibsea I put this comment accidentally in your previous post. But the livestream was today July 2nd. It’s called how to sailing. Should be over now. It’s called “ Hunter sailboats, why the bad name”. The hunter owner they interview mentions you.
Stephanie, if you enjoy getting to know some of the history of the Islands you're visiting you should consider reading James A Michener's book Caribbean. Was a very popular book 30 some years ago but I would still recommend the book to anybody that has an interest in the history of Islands.
It's a gear reduction starter much better than the old starter it's the gear reduction that is making the strange noise!! All good stay with the new starter
Love ;the best thing about sailing...hahah...when you're young, no shirt works out great and looks great...when you're an old man...best to keep a shirt on...hahaha...just say'n...
you should try to put a thin oil film over the metal parts in the engine bay, just spray it down with WD40 until you have the drive to clean it all from rust and corrosion
Hi Travis, it looks like your two starters are fundamentaly different in the way the pinion engages with the flywheel ring gear. The old one is a pre-engaged starter. The solenoid not only is a magentic switch, but it also has an electromagnetic plunger that pulls the gear forwards into mesh. The new starter is an inertia starter, where the starter motor starts to spin, and the pinion is on a spiral screw device that encourages the pinion to move forwards. The inertia mechanism is usually associated with older designs of starters. The pre engaged starter is typicaly more positive in action, and causes less wear to the teeth on the flywheel ring gear.
Hey Neale, you couldn’t have worded it better! In the end that was my exact thoughts about why I chose to keep the old starter and just change the magnetic switch. Thanks again! Travis.
I don't know much about Yanmars.... But what you described the difference in starters sounds exactly like the old vs. new versions of starters for my land cruiser. Sometime in the late '80's (or early '90's), they modified the starter and began using what is commonly referred to as a "gear reduction" starter in land cruiser forums. And I can tell you from experience, at least on a 45 year old toyota with a worn out gas engine, those newer gear reduction starters crank a lot faster, start the engine much quicker. And ya, they much a helluva lot more of a racket.
Winter here in Australia 🥶 atm Dam that water and sun looks so good . 😎🌴 hope you can pick up a GoPro maybe a cruiser has an old one to tide you over till you can get a package drop. never no your luck put it over the radio. c u next week 🤙
You should look for a starter/alternator rebuild shop. They are common in the US. I don't know about the Caribbean. I suppose they have them too, since rebuilding stuff like this makes sense over there even more in the states where new stuff is easier to find. A good rebuild shop can make an older starter or alternator like new. That new spare starter you have looks pretty chincy. They don't make them like they used to. We have two original equipment starters, one is a spare from our old engine. I took them both in and had them rebuilt at a shop and they are like new now. I also took both of our alternators in and had them rebuilt too. Each rebuild was about $100 but well worth it. I could have bought cheap Chinese units for about that price but as you have seen they are really crappy, with cut corners and made as cheaply as possible. The originals that came with the engines were built to last.
Good fix on the starter. It was nice to see the ruins. The history of the islands is so interesting. Thanks for sharing. I’m sure you’ll like Grenada when you get there. Simone and Ricky On Lady Africa are really enjoying it.
Look into the knock off go pros as well great to keep them on hand if you loose the real one. They are about $60 4 k too with all the attachments that are the same as go pro
Almost all starter rebuilds are simply replacing the solenoid and blowing all the accumulated dust out of the starter motor. Good to fix the old one and save the other as your spare. The fruit from the Turks Head Cactus isn't poisonous, my kids fight each other over them, although granted, the taste is nothing special. It's just one of the very few edible things you'll find wandering around.
Too much to learn from a book, but from being on the boat itself and being observant, when things fail, and getting used to how things should look and sound the longer we’re on it
Check out this video on Emily and Clark’s adventure. He rebuilds a starter just like yours. I’m sure you could learn something or glean some information from this. I watched your video and then I watched Emily and Clark’s and thought of you. th-cam.com/video/4NOUs5DUszI/w-d-xo.html
Great video, thank you for taking us along.
Good call on the solenoid, those types of wins are so sweet.

Thanks John! We’re planning on doing a full clean/repaint of the engine and following that, spraying it to prevent corrosion as well
Great idea on the solenoid change.
Enjoy your adventures.
Thank you!
that new starter is a gear reduction starter and it will have a lot more torque than the old one even though it is smaller

Nice pose with the cactus Travis🤣 And well done for getting the starter motor working👍
😝
The bit on the side is a pre engage unit. It engages fully so it doesn’t damage the flywheel gears. People tap them if it stick
Wow, St Johns looks really nice. Enjoyed watching your hikes and Travis’ starter repair.
Thanks for the video on the starter, then starter, then starter solenoid replacement, its crazy how well parts were made 30 years ago!
Love the sailing food combo! Just watched a live stream for how to sail and they were interviewing a hunter owner that gave you guys a shout out, he’s a fan too. Love seeing us Canadians doing so well out in TH-cam land! Cheers.
Thanks! Oh yeah?! That’s awesome. What was the live stream? Would love to look it up if they have it up after the fact for viewing!

Went back to E1 and absolutely loved it, the comments were a blast to read. Wish you two all the best!
That’s awesome! Thank you 😊
Great video thanks for sharing ⛵️⛵️⛵️
Thank you! And thanks for watching
Wow what a beautiful place thanks for the video🤙

@ 3:30 What a view!
I really enjoyed that hike and the views as well of course!
Awesome idea on the starter.
It's a gear reduction starter much better than the old starter it's the gear reduction that is making the strange noise!! All good stay with the new starter
In the old days you removed the copper studs out of the solenoid and turned them 180 degrees and it put the solenoid back to new and working
I, also have done that.
Great job on the two starters! Awesome ! Nice learning this! S/V Eternal Bliss Jen & Art Colon, Panama Shelter Bay Marina
Scarborough bluffs, lake Ontario??? Enjoy kids!!

Stephanie you are raising a boy. Good luck.

Glad you figured out the issue with the engine. I was leaning toward a battery that had lost most of it's cranking amps.
Love your vlogs you two. Sorry about the GoPro.
Good fix on the starter.

Yeah! We had one of those “no pros” but the quality was so poor it just wasn’t even worth it 😣

You can eat the pink fruits of the cactus
5:38 Sounds like your solenoid is bad.
Where did you learn boat maintenance?
Too much to learn from a book, but from being on the boat itself and being observant, when things fail, and getting used to how things should look and sound the longer we’re on it
Do you two have A/C on your boat? Looks hot there.
Yes but we would only use it if plugged in and we’re at anchor 99% of the time
Travis, all this time I thought you were a boy toy for Stephanie, you throw those tools around pretty good, I guess you aren't just a pretty face.
Nothing subtle about the whole wedding ring there Travis. Steph was clearly giving you the hurry up and get it done fool…..
😂

easy to to do without kids
Am I to understand that you guys are not married?
