  • Covid-19 and Travel Restrictions are impacting sailing through the Caribbean. PCR tests, quarantining, island closures and denied anchoring for rest is what we encountered while sailing down to Grenada. See how we sailed 400nm from Saba, Netherlands down to Grenada.

    WE, my bride and I, have owned a Hunter 36 for over 15-years. What I have learned is that a reefed main is more important than a reefed headsail......less heel. May even need to let out the main sheet a bit. Best wishes. :-)

    This whole COVID is really distressing. I bought a Hunter Passage 456 2 years ago and have been getting it ready to sail around the world and COVID came. To hear your story just saddens me. The old days of freely island hopping are gone.

      It’s certainly put a damper in a lot of plans. On the bright side, sailing has still been great for us during the pandemic, wouldn’t have been able to travel to such places otherwise!

    Toronto to Grenada in your first season is a mile stone for you. WD Jibsea.
    The cruise down the chain of islands with brief stops for rest is what it is today
    in the cruising world and you both have done well to side step the hassle of
    Denied Entry after 400 nm of sailing. Then again those countries who depend
    on tourism and cruisers alike are denied dollars, denario, cash from the many
    who won't be visiting their islands. Those countries you missed on the way down
    will still be there on your journey back up the chain. Unless your going to Panama?
    San Andres Island is open or was when Capt. Rick from SSL was there for over a year.
    Whatever IT is we're eating it unless it IS a barracuda. Fish line can be replaced.
    SO.. now that you have made it there- what IS the plan? Hang out for a few months?
    Boat projects? Planning the next route north bound? You have time and these memories
    so far that will last you both a life time. So far so good for Jibsea.
    Grenada the island of spice and... not a snowflake from Toronto anywhere to be found.

    That was a great film, lots of pace, lovely sailing shots. The covid cloud does have the odd silver lining and in this case it forced an ambitious journey. Your boat seems to handle very well. Well done, I enjoyed the ride.

    Congratulations on making it way down the thorny path. Hopefully you guys will enjoy Grenada and the cruising community there until the season is over.
    I'm glad we decided to stay in the good old USA this year. Things aren't so crazy with COVIDmania and we can move about freely for the most part without needing to take 289 pointless tests at nearly $200/whack. We were able to get vaccinated down in Florida well before we started back up north.
    Sorry to hear about your nav light issues. We have Aquasignal series-33 integrated LED nav lights and they are pretty awesome. They are SO bright and draw almost nothing for power. Unfortunately after years of faithful service both bow lights died a quick snd painless death when we were struck by lightning a couple of weeks ago. I can't blame the lights as just about all the outside lights and all of our instruments and navigation electronics also fried including our brand new autopilot. The steaming and deck lights actually exploded into bits.
    Good thing we are still in civilization and can easily get everything, although those silly nav lights are backordered through Defender for who knows how long. We won't be going anywhere fun for the next month anyhow while we do a full electronics refit.

    • @SailingJibsea
      @SailingJibsea  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We’re definitely over getting poked and prodded! It would be much more enjoyable if there weren’t so many hooos and hurdles
      Sorry to hear about the lightning damage! Glad to hear it was in civilization than out in the middle of no where in a more compromising situation
      Hopefully the refit goes smoothly!

    • @svbarryduckworth628
      @svbarryduckworth628 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know how people deal with ordering special parts and supplies out in the boondocks and say sane.
      Just the amount of time my wife has spent on the phone talking to various marine equipment distributors and suppliers rivals the time it takes me to troubleshoot the parts, pull them off the boat, and then replace the damaged items with the new ones.
      The items where we had a spare onboard were the least trouble. Just swap it out and put the item on the list for eventual replacement when we get somewhere such and item is cheap and easy to source.
      Sending items back to suppliers is more of a bother. Furuno was the best. Pull the whole autopilot and ship it to them. They will put it on a bench and rebuild it like new, with a new factory warranty. It'll be much cheaper than buying it again new. And we don't have to deal with customs and import duties.
      The lesson is to have spares for everything crucial you can't live without. We lucked out with our fridge in that we had enough spare parts, such as the electronic motor controller for the compressor, that I was able to get it running again the next day before all of our food went bad.

Traveling to unknown destinations is my passion. I have to hold hope I will get back to it. Dude, for added safety, tie your jackstays (red safety strap along deck) in a bowline through the bases of your cleats. A short-tailed cleated jackstay like what you tied can slip when under heavy load (i.e. when someone is overboard and dragging on it). Just noticed and thought you'd appreciate the tip. Cheers, from SY Miss Foxy, SINGAPORE.

      Ciguatera toxin. Ciguatera toxin is a heat-stable lipid soluble compound, produced by dinoflagellates and concentrated in fish organs, that can cause nausea, pain, cardiac, and neurological symptoms in humans when ingested.
      Barracuda's often have a high concentration of ciguatera.

      @@david.seholm I would be long dead if that were so. You don't eat the organs. And I have never ever heard of anyone getting sick from eating a barracuda filet. I am 62 years old and a retired chef and nutritionist. There is a lot of hype out there. None based in fact. The chemical you refer to is present in a lot of fish organs.
