I have a 2020 highlander. Depending on how often you have passengers in the third row, this might matter. With that said, I have not had one passenger in the third row since I have owned it (1yr). The third row is not a comfortable ride for adults for longer rides (more than 25 minutes). It is meant for short trips (for adults) and maybe children, but if you have pets, its probably the perfect place for them. I feel like it would be a decent spot for a pet to ride for any type of trip short or long. It will probably be tough to find actual videos of any adults sitting in the third row after an accident, only because it is kind of rare for adults to be riding in the third row at least for the Toyota Highlander.
You would have to step up to a full size Yukon, Escalade etc… to put some distance back there. That is a different league. I have the Highlander and the 20 something’s sit back there for rides of less than an hour but it is tight back there. I just like a bigger vehicle as my kids are grown. The car rides nice and feels real solid. They will be very reliable.
