  • In this video were fixing a drone laying queen in a beehive. Now when you see only drone brood in your hive its important to work out what is the problem. Is it a drone laying queen or a drone laying worker? One we can fix the other we cant. As beekeepers its crucial that you know what the difference is. Beginner beekeeper or bee farmer this is something you will eventually see.
    If we don't fix a drone laying queen in a hive then that beehive will die out. The hive need a fresh supply of worker bees to maintain the hive. Without this they die.
    In this video I show you how to fix a drone laying queen. Hope you find the video useful.

    Great to see I'm not alone in using a super frame in a brood chamber if short.
    Have just discovered a drone laying Queen, video came at the right time.

    I done the exact same a few weeks ago. Drone laying Queen. I gave them a frame of eggs and brood. Checked one week later and they started bringing on a queen cell, then they tore it down for some reason. Checked them again a week later and they're bringing on another queen cell (hopefully they don't tear this one down!)

    Thank you for this video. I'm a beginner since August with only 1 hive. My queen has failed and I bought nuc that was bursting at the seams and 2 days ago my original hive got a frame of eggs and larvae. I was going to go in tomorrow and knock down all but one queen cell, but after watching your video I'm not sure. Like your hive, the colony has gotten smaller and they're nearly all winter bees. I suppose the older bees just wouldn't want to swarm. I think like you, I'll let nature take its course. Thank you.

    Great video highlighting how you sometimes have to think on your feet. Would you check the frame of eggs you put in in a week’s time to make sure you knocked down all but one of the newly started queen cells. Otherwise you could end up with multiple queens and possible caste swarms with virgin queens.

    • @gwenyngruffydd
      @gwenyngruffydd  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In most cases you will do that. But in this case because they don’t want to swarm there is no need.

    I thought you needed to find the old queen and remove her first. I had a situation last year with a drone layer, gave 2 x frames of eggs/larva without finding the queen, no Q'cells raised due to her pheromones being present. Just a thought.

    • @gwenyngruffydd
      @gwenyngruffydd  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This hive was producing queen cells to replace her already. Bees don’t want a sterile queen.
      But there’s nothing wrong with taking the queen out first. You can do it that way too.

      All depends on the stage of the hive….the older they are the more likely they are to fail. Catch it early enough and giving them a frame of brood and eggs can fix the problem. But there needs to be a fair amount of bees in the hive for it to work

    Great video and thanks for sharing. I had a few hives last year end up with dronelaying queens by the end of the summer, bad year for queens.

    Hi, why did you not take down the queen cells in the left hand hive, because they would not be viable queen cells ?

    • @gwenyngruffydd
      @gwenyngruffydd  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Their probably not viable but their not going to swarm. Just leaving nature take care of it.

  • @russdean6598
    @russdean6598 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    If you knocked all the queen cells down, gave it a week to knock any new queen cells down would they still kill a newly introduced queen. ?

    • @gwenyngruffydd
      @gwenyngruffydd  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very good chance they will. The bees are old.
      But you can never be certain. To much of a risk with a £40 queen

  • @PeadarBoc

    I was inspecting one of my hives today and found the queen for the first time! I tried to capture her in the queen capture, just to see if I could do it..she went in..but flew out before I could close the lid. Should I be worried? I hope she didn't fly off or land in one of the supers I had laying to the side.

    • @gwenyngruffydd
      @gwenyngruffydd  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      She probably fell back into the main box. Check for day old eggs in next week’s inspection. Hopefully it will be full of eggs. If she’s not there check the supers for eggs.

    What would you do with a drone laying worker at this time of the year

    • @gwenyngruffydd
      @gwenyngruffydd  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Shake them all out. You could try this method but normally when you have a drone laying worker the hive has dwindled to nothing and the bees will be very old.

    • @gwenyngruffydd
      @gwenyngruffydd  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      11 mainly, sometimes 12……occasionally 10 when I steal frames from the boxes! Lol
      11 for me 😊👍🏻

    @NATURALBEEKEEPERSCOLLECTIVE ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Silly question, could you not of used the Queen excluder that you took off the dud queen hive and put it on the hive that needs the super? haha You said you cannot give them a super as no queen excluder You are worse then me lol That hive was packed full. Is there a follow up vid? I hope it all went well. If you have a queen that is suddenly laying drones just leave her if the hive was good because you will flood the area with good genes from good drones.
    Lessens the chance of aggressive genes getting in from colonies you do not know about that could be bad.
