    Three years later and this vid is still working its magic. Had I not viewed it and saw Tim's systematic way of approaching the task ("start on this corner and work our way around, tackling things as we come to 'em"), I would have never gotten the confidence to do this myself. He shows it is not the daunting task it appears to be at first glance, not if you approach it as he shows in this video. Can't say "thank you" enough for this excellent DIY video by Tim. Big thumbs up from me. (And from the wife -- it was her car.)

    I have an L200/Triton with the same 6G74 which needed new valve cover gaskets. I got overwhelmed by the amount of plumbing and wiring on my first attempt and then came across this video which is absolute gold as it is the same engine and plenum configuration. Thankyou so much for putting the time into this video it's so detailed and valuable.

    This video is the very best explanation of exactly what is required to get to the spark plugs for replacement on a Mitsubishi Montero 3.5 engine. It also makes it very compelling to remove the entire drivetrain and replace it with some good ol' GM LS V8 power that you can actually work on without needing a PHD in vehicle mechanical skills

    An old video but well done (except the missing steps due to dead battery). To the poster, thanks for the video. I've spun wrenches on a lot of cars, but mostly older ones, so this was still intimidating despite my experience. To viewers, he shows a lot of good mechanic-ing habits and tricks I use. Laying out parts as you remove them, putting bolts back in once you remove brackets etc.. One tip I would add, for things like the plenum where you have different length bolts, is to roughly draw the shape of the part on a scrap piece of cardboard and use a screwdriver to poke holes about where the bolts are, then push the bolts through the cardboard to make a holder that has the bolts in their respective positions.

    • @OnlineAutoRepairVideos
      @OnlineAutoRepairVideos  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Michael, THANKS! That is a good tip because I have seen a few other guys do that, and it is extremely important to put those bolts in the right place. Thank you for your input and advice!

    I found your video to be very helpful and informative. Unlike many how to videos, you took the time to SHOW almost everything you did ... and your videos seem to be mostly in focus, which is hard to do. Well Done !! Also, I enjoy your friendly comments and humor ... made this job seem more approachable because you did not talk down to the audience.

    • @OnlineAutoRepairVideos
      @OnlineAutoRepairVideos  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That was a great comment, thank you very much Dancing Loon. We try to show everything, we hate it when we try to search for a repair and they replace a part within 5 minutes. That's not very helpful, So we try to record our repairs in a way that anyone can do it.

    You said something very beautiful when you got to the extra part of removing the side bracket to get to the valve cover bolts. To motivate yourself you said the customer would be happy and have no oil leaks. I did it all but gave up at that point because I was afraid I wouldn't be able to get the back over valve cover bolt back in. Was afraid to remove that bracket and maybe having to remove the egr tube. Wonderful video.

    Great Video! Used your instructions to do this job on a Mitsubishi Challenger 2001 3.0l V6 in Australia. Lightly different but very helpful your system! 4 of 6 plugs were swimming in oil, Intake Manifold was broken in 2 pieces and the Rocker Valve Cover was also bended as in the video. Thanks to you no bolts are left over after putting everything together :D and it is running perfect again!

      I had 2 more questions. I recently had the alternator replaced due to a oil leak, but the level on the dipstick showed full. I looked around to see where it might be coming out from and come to find out it looks to be from the right valve cover, is it a common problem with these engines?

    • @OnlineAutoRepairVideos
      @OnlineAutoRepairVideos  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      a common problem with these vehicles is the valve cover gaskets, and specially the camshaft seals

    Torque spec for the valve cover bolts (the 10mm ones) is 3.4 ft/lbs. Mitsubishi refers to it as the "rocker cover" in their repair manuals.
    Also please don't over torque these. It will bend the metal cover outward and you'll have an even bigger leak. My local dealership charged me $270 for a new cover.

  • @MarsciponeTiramisu
    @MarsciponeTiramisu 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This is such a detailed video. I had never done this before but after this video? Valve Cover leaking issue now resolved! Without taking it to another "messy" mechanic who left every single nut loose on the right side (passenger) which caused the oil to keep leaking down onto my alternator and starter. I kept replacing starters & alternators thinking I needed a new motor. Because I had already paid a shop to change the valve cover gaskets. I'm a girl and I'm definitely subscribed. The only thing I have to do now is replace the oil pump for a Montero Sport 2002. Do you have a video for that? If not, can you post the instructions please?

    • @OnlineAutoRepairVideos
      @OnlineAutoRepairVideos  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Cris for that great comment. It seems that is a common issue with these trucks, oil leaking onto the alternator. Sorry, but we don't a video for the oi, pump, but I'll see if we can get you some instructions. Actually, email me at Tim@AstralAutoRepairs.com and I'll send them to you through email.

      It went okay! I over torqued one cover and had to purchase a new one. Local dealer had one for $108. I also purchased an inch/pounds torque wrench after learning that 10 in/pds is not 10 ft/pounds. Fixed the leak though! I bought 2 90mm bolts and cut the head off to use as markers for reinstalling the intake. They held the gasket in place and helped line up the intake during re-installation. Other than the valve cover, it was uneventful. I went slow, and arranged all bolts and brackets in the order of removal. Thanks Astral, I appreciate your videos

      My 2001 Montero has had an idle issue for 2 years. Intermittently, it will idle a 200 rpms and hesitate. Other than the low idle, the car runs great.
      I've replaced the IAC, EGR system, plugs, wires, all vacuum lines, MDP, PCV, hoses, seals, etc. All factory Mitsubishi parts. Same issue. Cleaned the Throttle valve and all ports around the butterfly. Tough issue, but it's our 3rd vehicle.

      No problem at all Bobby! I forgot which gasket we used, but it still should not leak. BE SURE to make sure it is not leaking from the rubber plugs in the back of each cylinder head. Those do tend to leak, and they are not that bad to change at all.

    How much torque did you put on cover valves bolts?

    • @OnlineAutoRepairVideos
      @OnlineAutoRepairVideos  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you go to autozone, you can look up how much torque should be. Not too many people AT ALL will use a torque wrench on valve covers, they just know the feel once the bolt(s) are tight.

    Very good video in general. I just did my valve gaskets and I used silicone thanks to the advice of Autozone and my engine is leaking oil. I think this is the second video where its mentioned that you shouldn't use silicone. On the part of putting the covers back you didn't mention how tightly are those bolts supposed to be. Do you have any references? i have a 2001 and a 2003 Mitsubishi Monteros. I love these cars but now they are getting older and I need to be able to get things done myself as I had already paid a mechanic to do this job but didn't do it right so I though I should be able to do a better job. Also, I am thinking that my engine covers..

    • @OnlineAutoRepairVideos
      @OnlineAutoRepairVideos  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, looks like you are about to get your hands really dirty. Just be sure of the timing marks in case it's an interference engine, and no matter what you hear, always replace the head bolts if they are available. Also, DO NOT use engine tech gaskets, they will be cheap (cost wise) but are very cheaply made. If you need any advice, let us know

      If you're going to do head gaskets, yes, unless you can get to the head bolts without removing them, but if you are about to do head gaskets, that part will be really easy. just be sure to mark the cam caps(they should already be marked) and put them back in the same place.

      @mydv9305txdied 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I signed up to Autozone from Australia just now and apparently the torque specs are 2-3 ft. lbs. (3-4 Nm). I've read that they basically need to be "just" tight, or even finger tight as they strip super easy. Some of mine were already stripped unfortunately and won't tighten properly, so after doing all this it still leaks... so be careful and don't over tighten them!

    Can you help me out...

    • @OnlineAutoRepairVideos
      @OnlineAutoRepairVideos  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Jesse, I sure can...
      1. Is the oil leaking from the right side (passenger) of the engine?
      2. Is it leaking on the alternator?

    • @jessemendieta4470
      @jessemendieta4470 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it is..

    • @OnlineAutoRepairVideos
      @OnlineAutoRepairVideos  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      97% (because I'm not actually there to see it) sure your leak is coming from the right front camshaft seal. I did this video because I thought it was coming from the gasket as well. It kept shorting out the alternator and they would not guarantee another one (after 3). Once I finished, it was still leaking.
      I took off the top half of the right timing belt cover, started the truck, and actually saw the oil leaking from the cam seal, running along the side of the valve cover, then down to the alternator. I should have did a video on that, but I just wanted to get that done, especially after doing that big job on the valve covers.
      Hope this helps and if you need any information, let me know.

      There's a slight chance of the seals coming out of the valve cover when reinstalling the valve cover to he engine, so we use sealer to keep the seals in place.
