    Couldn’t agree with Bill’s take more. A simply told story, with the right technique, can yield dramatic results. Complexity doesn’t always come from a convoluted series of events unfolding, but a clear setup to an obstacle and a solution that an audience can track as logical (doesn’t have to be perfect logic, but grounded in the story/character’s actions).
    This is something Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul does so flawlessly. Is setting up a series of, seemingly, unsolvable problems for our main character(s) and then wraps them up in an unexpected, but satisfying way. Because the writers do the work and don’t cut corners. There’s a line to follow.
    I really have to get back to Barry. I only scratched the first season, but I’ve heard great things and I’m a HUGE fan of Bill’s.

    Way too few people watch films from the 30's and 40's these days, but I really wish they would. Writers, directors and actors working at the top of their craft. When I was a teenager in the 90's, I was obsessed with those two decades of cinema, even before I went into film school. And don't just watch American films from the period: watch the films that were being made in Germany and France and Russia. I love when Hader talks about it, as it may cause some younger people to discover the era and not be afraid of "old" movies.

      To be fair, there have been many, many crappy movies for every decade since 1910, and very few truly great movies for each decade, too. I'm all for stimulating young people to watch old movies, but we gotta pick the best ones to show them first, or else they might give it up entirely.

    Discussing the timeless nature of movies, in a film class I saw a Charlie Chaplin film that was made in 1918, at the time almost 100 years old. People, including myself, were still laughing out loud at the bits and jokes. Generations apart and it still worked. Blew me away.

      Definitely. What Bill Hader said about good storytelling, good screenplay and good actors (...) is absolutely true and holds water, even - or better yet (what with all that cgi stuff nowadays) *especially now* - ... That's what makes The Godfather (just to name one) still one of the greatest trilogies of all times that have been banned on celluloid. You can cgi the living hell out a flick - if you lack these other components Bill mentioned, the result will always remain the same: Just some mediocre pablum...

    “Subjective Camera Move” unlocked some of my own viewings/reflections on cinema. Wow.

    • @jaerivus
      @jaerivus ปีที่แล้ว

      Can you (or anyone) give me an example of a subjective camera move so I can understand it better? He used the example, "dolly shot," which I do understand. Is he literally just talking about movement, or is it about framing, or lighting/composition?
      And what makes a "move" subjective? Would the framing of the shot itself be informing us in a unique way?

    • @elsewhere_ash
      @elsewhere_ash ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@jaerivus I best describe it in the way a camera move helps the viewer interpret subtextual meanings about the tone of a scene. Hence, a dolly shot helps evoke the feeling of physical distress/paranoia. Or how a Dutch angle creates visual tension between two people discussing. Possibly.

    • @WdawgSmith
      @WdawgSmith 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well IF they have to pick an agenda They mostly choose the right one It’s hard to make movies while catering to a bunch of people who want a dictator who claims he’s a Christian leader while paying porn stars for sex and racking up more felonies than 99% of the illegal immigrants he wants to keep out of the country Much easier to err on the side of caution and choose the side that (I know this will be hard to hear) tries to just care for everyone even if they are different than we are Tries to view things from another perspective rather than just going “oh my god look at that guy who wants to be a girl It will affect my life in no way but I hate it” Do you see how ridiculous that would be to try to cater to ?
      So I agree I wish they had no agenda but it’s easier said than done when one side already thinks that the “Jews run Hollywood” So they are already going to be viewed as having an agenda anyways And these days there is almost nothing redeeming about the Republican Party (You got guns, and you got this new Christianity that has nothing to do with the new testaments message of love and inclusion and on top of all of that is a paranoia so deep that many republicans seem to be openly supporting the possibility of a dictatorship being the answer I mean Donald Trump is a bottom of the barrel human being He talks like it and he has proven it by his actions And somehow someway he is still managing to find people who will vote for him It’s just really quite a wild scene.
      I’m 38 And 12 of the last 16 years have been democrat led and if you speak to a Republican they act like the country is burning and the world is ending But in all honesty the country is basically the same as it was 16 years ago No radical changes have happened The only ones making any radical changes are the republicans Now I’m not a fan of abortion but I’m not a fan of telling another person that they don’t have they don’t own their own bodies. And I’m certainly not a fan of anyone being able to buy a weapon that can kill 30 people in under a minute. But you all seem to love that stuff So let’s just hope to God above that you never win another election until the party reverts back to its tough but fair roots. I mean it’s getting scary. You are scaring people and every country who ever had a dictator or has one now wishes they could go back to the time right before that election or decision that resulted in utterly destroying the voice of the people.
      Our government is far from perfect but electing felons is not going to help things. We mostly don’t allow felons to vote and that’s a Republican law honestly And all of a sudden out of desperation they want to allow a many many many times felon to be leader of the free world. It’s shocking how low people will go because their own leaders have created a completely false panic.
      And then to act surprised that he lost an election ? Are you all morons? The guy is completely and utterly moronic He says things on camera in front of America and then 4 hours later claims he did not say anything of the sort He’s not even in the ballpark of being fit to do any job quite honestly He’s a con man An arrested and convicted con man And for some reason people are just okay with their leader lying as long as he remains very very politically incorrect That’s the trade off at this point.
      He had 4 years He did nothing about immigration He got into office and realized he didn’t know what to do He just wanted the power Now he’s addicted to it But if you think for one second he actually cares about the people of the country You would be insane. He cares about his people.

    I had the original idea for Barry, but mine was about a young boy who can talk to flowers and animals. The kid is shipwrecked on an enchanted island and befriends the local baby animals. The kid and his animal friends fight off a band of magical pirates who want to invade the island and raze the forest looking for lost ghost treasure. The boy and the animals use the magical pirate ship to sail to America, where he becomes a sniper for the Marines, and the rest from there on is really pretty similar. They're almost identical, some say.

    Hader is an amazing director but what makes "Barry" so good is that he knows that the most important ingredient is a good story. It's the writing. The script. That's where the magic is.

    Yeah, totally looking forward to movies directed by Bill Hader! He had to go through a long process to get there. Being a hilarious cast member on SNL, hilarious on talk shows and then finally directing Barry. Maybe don't fight the journey, but also lay out markers for where you want to go, and keep your ship pointed that way!

    Watching hilarious nerds expertly discuss entertainment without pretention (I'm looking at you, Quentin) and providing laughs along the way (a skill Quentin utterly lacks; it's difficult to think of a more unfunny person) is priceless. There is stuff that I put in front of my kids because it stuck with me for good reason. Quality is timeless. For crying out loud, my kids LOVE Buffy, even though the 90s references fly right past them. They are going on 14, which is scientifically recognized as the deepest canyon of cynicism, yet they will always crack a smile at, "That word, you keep using it..." and you all know the rest of the quote because your parents didn't suck, or because you're as old as Fred Savage.
    To every parent out there, get your favourite stuff in front of your kids before they are into their teen years. Once they hit 13-ish, either they'll appreciate the fundamentals of the classics, or you'll have lost them to whatever passes for dopamine-dumpster entertainment on their phones. It's not binary - one or the other - but it can be part of the toolkit they use throughout their lives to appreciate the art of entertainment.

    8:51 I too loved to sing KP songs when I was a child; about 7. Bill, you need to go through One of The Boys, Teenage Dream, and the first half of Prism and read the lyrics. Not stuff for little girls to be singing trust me. One of my favs was hummingbird heartbeat. If you read those lyrics....................GL is all I have to say.

    …my dad showed me Pink Floyd’s The Wall when I was 7. The shaving scene came on. I have never before nor since seen a man hit the fast forward button so fast.
    But I did appreciate it. …I don’t think it was worth all the recurring nightmares about Bob Geldof though.
