    Great tutorial. Though one thing I noticed was, when I set the 3005 TANK > TNK_VOLL_ANZEIGE menu option from 8 liter to 8.5 liter, it set the "Increase electronically limited fuel capacity" back to "Unassigned". So I had to go back and set that to "Active" which I then noticed it set 3005 TANK > TNK_VOLL_ANZEIGE back to 8 liter. The end range of my Rex is still greater than before, so that's a plus.

      Mike, the units of measure are in hexadecimel, and in increments of 0.5, so if you used expert mode and tried to change when the unit comes on to 10% of charge, you need to use a hex converter, and enter the appropriate value for "10."

    Great video, I’ve spent $2,300 for an NBT EVO head unit from BimmerTech to get Apple CarPlay on my 2014 Rex. Your coding walkthrough works perfectly for the original stock head unit but when I use the aftermarket unit, it doesn’t allow me to configure the SOC. I like my new head unit, but may need to sacrifice putting the original one back for the sake of longer range😖

    Do you or anyone else know whether this is a safe thing to do for a 2020 i3.
    I’m reading on the Bimmer app, but it’s for the 60 amp battery ?
    I believe my car has the largest battery that you can get in the 3 and before I go into the coding, I want to be kind of certain that it’s not gonna be horrible to the car
    My goal would be to unlock the fuel capacity to be able to turn the Rex on whenever I under 75% would appreciate any input

    How effective is the rex at maintaining the state of charge on the battery? If you're rolling down the highway at 75mph with the heat or a/c blasting, can the rex keep up and maintain the charge or will it still lose a charge, how rapidly, etc?

    • @joelcruvant3287
      @joelcruvant3287  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Anything above 70 or inclines and the battery will slowly drain, AC too, although I didn't notice much difference. When driving a full tank empty on the highway I'm used to seeing the battery drop maybe a third or half a bar. So if you're planning on a cross country trip with no slow speed driving to give the generator time to charge up, the battery will definitely drain. It's a shame the rex can only be set to maintain charge and not increase it. Also, the cooling fan will run a few minutes after parking and that seems to drain the battery a bit too.

    • @mikemchale7639
      @mikemchale7639 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      oh yes, it works for me.. after a while at that speed with ac it may go down to 70% or less but it really doesn't limit your range, except after 70 miles you will need some gas.

    • @maxmoser412
      @maxmoser412 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks, also assuming in a pinch you could just pull off at a rest stop and let the rex run to charge the battery for a bit?

    • @texmex9721
      @texmex9721 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I am able to maintain 74 on my REx and remain at the same battery level on level ground with no A/C. My car is a 2017, and supposedly the Rex makes a little more HP than 2104-2016 models. With the hold mode (like in the video) though, you can engage it at 75% battery. At that point you can maintain any speed the car can go, it's just you'll use some battery. Much less than you would without the Rex running. So you might drop from 75% battery to 65% battery over 50miles of driving at 85mph.
      It's still not the car I would choose for a 1000 mile trip at 100mph, but that's why there are rental cars...

    • @onefastdriver7358
      @onefastdriver7358 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      One thing I've noted is that you can turn on your cruise control/auto distance control, and not actually set it. Just hit the button to activate it. With it activated, you can change your "mode" down to Eco Pro + (the lowest) and exceed the normal 56 mph restriction. If I'm really concerned with distance - ie. super late at night - I can stretch out quite a few more miles that way. Along with the range extender and being able to turn on the "hold" mode at will, it gives a fair amount of flexibility.

      Jerry FromUSA I did a 1000 mile trip on the REx and I haven’t had an issue yet. Actually driving with the REx on more seems to be good for the car and I’ve had fewer CEL or ‘drivetrain malfunction warnings’ since coding. Most forums say it’s hit or miss with the service centers. The backups get the ECU’s back to stock so usually it’s not a problem. Of course any coding beyond of what the car was made to do could cause legit warranty voiding problems so I wouldn’t do anything the car wasn’t designed for.

      Code changes allow you to access services and features that, by default, are (for various reasons and regulations) are turned off. Some (US) disabled features are: AM radio, watching movies on your iDrive display (great while sitting and charging your car), changing your tank capacity from 1.7 gallons to the complete 2.5 gallons (the US restricts full capacity for EV/eco reasons), activating HSOC (hold state of charge) which gives you the flexibility (under 75% battery) to turn on your REx (range extender). For long commutes, HSOC is good when I'm looking to get the best efficiency-- using REx on the highway when I know I'll have little regeneration ability.

    The concept of the 'extreme hybrid' or range-extended car is tantalizing.... yet VW won this race, back in 2008 with their X1 design. I can't understand why others aren't going in that design direction.... the i3 sure misses the mark. I find this car to be very underachieving!
