    I once had the entire Star Wars collection of figures. I used to buy two, one I kept in its container, the other I'd play with (I was only young then) I came home from school one day and found my father had given the entire collection away to a younger kid. It was about a decade before I could even look at a toy again lol Getting back into them now as art, the scars are healing.

    There is also a huge customizing community based around the vinyl toy scene. If you are at all interested in this scene I highly recommend checking out Spanky Stokes, Urban Vinyl Daily, Toy Break or one of the many other blogs out there that are dedicated to the Vinyl Art scene.

    This video featuring Designer Art Toys needs to be updated with the popularity of "indie" toy designers and 3D printed toys as well as the Sofubi revolution.

    I never really warmed to simpler designs, where the paint job itself can make up most of the detail. I'm a sucker for really detailed, beautifully sculpted art. Shiftlett Brothers, that kinda thing. If you can wrap your head around it, the painting of art like that can be a pretty satisfying hobby.

    I'm a big fan on the small random box vinyls. I have a shelf full of them. It's hard not to drop a log of money on them for $10/piece.

    I have 7 inch kidrobot Reaper sitting next to my tv. The nice about art toys is that they are often verry affordable and look cool. 50/60 dollars is a verry decent price for a cool display thingy.

    You should look into 3A. They’re not cartoony or very “pop culturey” but they’re really cool toys and action figures. Prices can get a bit high, but you can find some good ones in the 100-180 range if you look hard enough on eBay.

    3A or ThreeA is a company who do a line of robot toys based on the works from Ashley Woods (mostly based on WWR continuity).
    They range from about £30 to arm and leg territory, they make some really nice looking stuff and have really nice textured paint jobs, as well as normally articulated fingers / feet / toe joints.

    MakerBot a limited edition Tested character. Or find a local company willing to do a small vinyl run of the tested crew cartoon style. You could always auction them off at some point.

    WWR = World War Robot.
    Hot Toys are more perfect replicas of people / charects. The 3A stuff is all stylised (they also do some utter rot, one piece they do is just a food and it costs a pretty penny).
    3A stuff also tends to be all fabric when they use it, Hot Toys seems to favour plastic silicon stuff (no idea what it is, but I've seen pictures of it ripping over time).

    Norm mentioned that artists can get into creating/designing their own vinyl toys. Does anyone know how to get involved in making their own art toys? I’d love to design a limited line of vinyl figures if possible.

    This is awesome Norm, nice to see Brian and Selim getting call outs for their work.
    I design and produce toys for many many artists and I have a Kickstarter that can use your help. Check it out. www.kickstarter.com/projects/tenacioustoys/little-maddie-designer-figure I am available all this week to talk about the project. There are some cool photos of the process, molds etc in the update section that you would like. Thank you for covering the stuff we work so hard to make.

    Never understood the appeal of collecting figurines. They look cool but they are way too fucking expensive for what they are, have no practical purpose & they take up precious space. Also they are girl repellent.
