What inspiring women! I'm glad we got peace, even if it took another couple of decades. They're right, you can't beat the Northern Irish... we're still on a journey to uniting as a people, but it will happen. Glad that I have such strong women to look up to, great role models!
I was there and filmed the first Peace walk. It was a turning point in breaking down the barriers between the two tribes.
I’d forgotten how articulate they both were. Thank you for sharing this. If only we could live in a world with out war.
These two are the faces of courage.
These two women and Father Alec Reid were by far the best the Catholic community in Northern Ireland had to offer. And that's coming from a Loyalist. This clip also shows Feminism at it's finest.
If the men of Northern Ireland - politicians and religious leaders alike who "owned" the destiny of Northern Ireland at the time - in the 70s - would have followed women's lead, nay, if these men would just had these women at the peace talks and at the table of negotiations, things would have been very very very different in Northern Ireland today. Men did "somewhat" ultimately, slowly but surely, had women but very few... and if it was not for Mo Mowlam, (UK) or John Hume (Derry) what would be the state of Northern Ireland today? It is certainly thanks to these women and men from the 70s, 80s, and 90s that breathed, lived, walked, and ate PEACE, that we have peace today between the people. The irony is that we still don't have peace between the politicians of Northern Ireland.
Currently there is no government. It happened few times in the past and now again...for the past 2 years now. Northern Ireland is the one region of the world where the people after a war, live in Peace but not its political institutions. Them are still at war.
For the sake of Yesterday. of Today. of Tomorrow. For the sake of the children of the island of Ireland and for the children of the children of the island of Ireland. We must unite.
This interview is from 1976!!!!!! The Friday Peace Agreement only happened after 20 years later, 1998. Shame Shame Shame. Will it be the same in the Middle East? Women, Israelis and Palestinians, walked together 3 days before October 7th when the war started in the streets of Jerusalem, joined by other women of the world, to demand PEACE for their children.
His-Story + Her-Story = Our-Story
Peace will come as a choice or as a consequence.
Wonderful people!
We have lost both of these amazing women now. What a loss to the world.
Mairead Maguire is still alive and well . . .
