For folks who don't know, Vlad is a classically trained pianist.

Much like Matt from periphery he just finds timing any way possible and produce pure gold

I’m not a drummer, so excuse me if I have this totally wrong, but when people had said he plays open-handed, could they mean in the sense he doesn’t play traditionally crossed-hands?
But love watching your analysis! My next suggestion would be Homeback drum playthrough, as that also includes all the other tracks (including vocals). I think you would really like it for the different time sigs ☺️

I think that is what they meant.

That is definitely what is meant: the left hand on the hat and right on snare, then opposite when using ride so his hands do not need to cross.
This frees up the otherwise ‘trapped’ snare hand when on hat and gives a lot of flexibility to move around the kit.

As a drummer who played from the late 70s to early 90s I think it's amazing that we can get this sort of drum playthrough from a live show. Back before in-ear monitors the stage volume would have been too high to do something like that. Here you hear just enough crowd and just enough guitar and bass and that's it.
I think he brings his elbows out a little when doing the blasts. in this live version of Ape he does it a little: th-cam.com/video/M9jNkqfe98c/w-d-xo.html
and this one of I Speak Astronomy he does it a little too but I don't think it's because he's straining to do it: th-cam.com/video/M9jNkqfe98c/w-d-xo.html

Great video. Vlad's clearly an insane musician all around.
If you're interested in some other drummers I'd love to see what you think of the drummer from The Ocean Collective, Paul Seidel. Here's a link to his playthrough of Jurassic | Cretaceous.

Sadly I don't think there's many live playthroughs of him specifically but they do have a few live sessions/albums that have been uploaded that are all good quality.

jinjer are always a great watch, i fluxuate and will probably be back onto them in a week haha, my random drum watching right now is this japanese guy who does more jazz like playing
th-cam.com/video/nTfVJTinPjk/w-d-xo.html would be cool to see what you think, its probably not a big view drawing video but its some amazing druming all the same

man "open handed" means he plays pedals as a right handed and hands as a left handed...

Fair, not what I would call open handed but thanks for the explanation

An example of a drummer who plays open handed would be the Simon Phillips

Not as good as buddy Rich. He is the master. His drumming is musical and totally brilliant.
