Piercings as they are temporary compared to tattoos.
Four of them at the moment.
      Septum
      Tounge bar
      Nipples
Important to know with a toungebar is that you will chip your teeth if you are not carefull enought.

      Hey Chris!
My left ear cartilage is dermal punched at 00 gauge, or 10mm so I can fit my pencil through it when I draw.
Two ear lobe piercings on each side. Bridge piercing, central eyebrow piercings on both side and a vertical bridge piercing (third eye) in my forehead.
Septum piercing, labret piercing through my lower lip, medusa through my upper lip.
Plans include splitting my tongue (bifurcation), then piercing both sides, lilac eye tattoos.
Subdermal silicone forearm spiral implants, and subdermal silicone thumb spines.
Personally, I don't find any modifications to be "too much" per se.
However, some mods get to a point where it'll affect quality of life, and the piercer/cutter should advise against performing them.
Piercing the tongue horizontally, or putting dermals on your fingers are great examples of this.

Seeing these, I can’t help but think of my uncle Rodney. My Gpa had restaurants for 65 years before his death. My uncle worked for him prepping things in the afternoon for the evening. One day my younger uncle (his brother)visited him at the restaurant while he was working. Rod was putting pieces of beef into the grinder to make ground beef. He lost concentration for just a moment and ended up with his hand into the machine up to his wrist. The emt’s couldn’t get him loose from it so they had to take him to the hospital with it still attached. In the end he lost his whole hand. It was an unsightly amputation. Back in the 80’s they weren’t as skilled at these sort of things as they are now. Even though he sued the manufacturer of the machine, and won a huge amount, it still devastated him. He drank to deal with the phantom nerve pain and just couldn’t keep it under control. He died of alcoholism related illnesses. So, seeing people choose to do these sort of things absolutely boggles my mind.

As a dentist, I think about the time I refused to give a young man permanent vampire fangs. He later came back and thanked me when he got a real job that I talked him out of it. But I also have to admit that part of me struggles with some procedures that are considered OK in the dental and medical community. What about grinding the enamel off 16-20 perfectly good teeth for veneers (I try and talk people into Invisalign and whitening for better long term health). What about breast implants, especially abnormally large implants? And add to that todays controversies? What is the difference between amputating an ear, a finger, a leg or severing a spine because that is how someone identifies, versus doing a mastectomy of healthy breast tissue because a woman identifies as a man. I personally think when anyone wants to remove a perfectly healthy body part, which is irreversible, the medical community should at least require extensive counseling and therapy before the patient can go through with it.

I had shoulder surgery a few years back. They completely numbed my arm to the point where all I felt was pressure. I could not raise or lower my arm any at all, unless I used my other arm. My arm kept falling out of the sling, but I did not even know it because it was so numb. They left a numbing pump in for 3 or 4 days. By the time it was a couple of days in, I was miserable, because I just wanted to be able feel and use my arm again. Maybe they should numb the people who think they want to be paralyzed for a few days and I'll bet they would change their minds.

A paper I read a while ago on BIID noted that they observed both the neurological version (with fMRI evidence), as well as a variant where no such variation in the fMRI scans was detected. This suggests that there is a neurological and psychological variant of BIID. The general conclusion about BIID by researchers based on the available evidence is that therapy is the way to go, not surgery.
In cases where the desired paralysis, amputation or similar was achieved (through self-mutilation or surgery), the BIID would often return again, whereas therapy had much better outcomes.
There's also a whole discussion going on about whether BIID (or 'Body Identity Dysphoria' as some call it) is the same as Gender Dysphoria or not, with a range of recent papers suggesting that GD and its extreme body modifications are in fact a form of BIID.
The big question here seems to be whether it's truly 'free will', when we're subject to so many external forces that push us towards accepting a certain kind of self-image. Just look at cosmetic surgery and the beauty ideals that each culture seeks to uphold. Where does free will begin, and social pressure end? When is it okay to remove healthy tissue to give into some feeling, or is it ever okay? When you're bullied because your ears are standing out, or your nose is rather large, cosmetic surgery seems tempting indeed, but that too comes with the risks of surgery, infections, etc.
There are still many grey zones here, it would seem, and a lot more research to be done.

Makes sense, the gut feeling would have leaned in the same direction, looking at the Gender Dysphoria and the existing studies and remorse with the surgery I am pretty sure there is more push on that end of the spectrum then for the BIID.

I would suspect that it's reasonably normal? Like an amputee with phantom pain or feeling. Or a simpler way to see it would be age. I often feel like there no way I'm 37, I still feel (or my brain feels) like I'm in my 20s. Til I try to do something (usually dumb) and my body remind me I'm definitely Not 20 anymore lol. It's like a bit of a brain vs body disconnect. Though I kinda wish it was reversed, my brain would feel wiser and my body looked and behaved like it was still 20 haha.

BIID is severely lacking in research, but it is proven to be an actual disorder, hypothesized to be in the part of the brain responsible for proprioception and body mapping. Most BIID sufferers develop symptoms between the ages of 4-6 and it causes immense suffering. In most cases therapy and psychiatric medications don’t help to relieve the dysphoria, but can help with the depression that comes with it.
It isn’t an aesthetic thing, it isn’t because they think disability is cool, it isn’t because they want to have a disability to be treated differently or get benefits. They hide their feelings and suffering from everyone around because they know that wanting to be disabled isn’t normal and most often they feel very upset that they have this condition because they don’t want to harm the disability community. BIID can also form after injury or come with CRPS, where amputation seems like the only treatment that could give any quality of life back.
Something else that’s very interesting is that a study was done showing that people with amputation focused BIID could repeatedly pinpoint their desired level of amputation with 1mm accuracy, while their eyes are covered. The study also found that the skin was slightly thicker and had less sensation below the desired level of amputation, when compared to the skin directly above that level.
I’m disabled, I’m a wheelchair user due to a genetic disorder. I understand the frustration around BIID, I used to feel the same. But I decided to actually understand why this happens, and now I truly believe that they are suffering immensely and they deserve care the same as anyone else. More research needs to be done so that BIID sufferers don’t have to go to such extreme lengths of self mutilation to get relief from the condition.
Yes, amputation/paralysis/any other thing to help them should be a last resort. They all come with huge risks and side effects, but honestly if all other treatment fails, they’re probably gonna attempt it on their own, so why not have it as a last resort treatment so it can be done in a safe environment?

I'm sorry, I need to put this in the comments for anyone who might be reading but when that documentary showed the woman with BIID walking and said 'she is actually able to walk perfectly' while I understand that in her context I worry that some might interpret a wheelchair user being able to walk as evidence they actually don't need a wheelchair at all. Something like 80% of all wheelchair users are ambulatory (can walk) and the widespread notion that if someone gets up from a wheelchair and walks a little then they must not need a wheelchair and actually be a faker is EXTREMELY harmful for us :/ I know that's not at all what was going on in the documentary but I really want people to know this.

I've been a natural bodybuilder since I was 16; I grew up on comic books instead of TV, so I always wanted that superhero body. But I wanted the strength and stamina that comes from putting the work in.
So a hugely shocking body modification to me were 'bodybuilders' getting implants to look like they have bigger, disproportionate muscles. I mean, like actual molded plastic implanted under the skin for the illusion of great muscles. The amount of infections that come from these body mods is staggering to me. Many end up causing more damage due to infection, whereby the implant AND natural muscle supporting them have to be removed due to infection or disease. 😱

Thank you for accidentally answering a question I was wondering about. A few years ago I had a heart attack which required triple bypass surgery, and the operation required the surgeon to cut through my entire sternum.
I have made a full recovery, but ever since my op I've had this weird thing whereby I get a sound and sensation like cracking my knuckles but from the top of my rib cage. This happens sometimes when I twist my shoulders relative to the rest of my body, and it never happened before the operation. I now know that the sound is coming from the joint at the top of my rib cage. I didn't even know that was a joint there!

I'm convinced that the vast majority of body modders have deep-seated mental issues that trigger, or drive, their modification behaviour. Whether or not that's something they should be treated for, or if their modifications should be supported, is the discussion worth having. Just because someone has a mental issue that causes certain behaviours is not enough to label them "crazy" or "insane". Heck, I'm autistic myself. A lot of my behaviours look weird and self-harming from the outside. My reluctance to have friends or engage in social situations for instance. I get called a "shut in" and people believe that I feel lonely while I'm perfectly happy on my own.

I've noticed an explosion of autism or social awkwardness being lumped in as a form of autism. I think most on line autistic(s) are much like this woman who wants to be a paraplegic and their mental illness is searching for a disability. As some one who has spent a lot of time time working with both high functioning and low functioning autistic people and having a sister who has high functioning autism. The only ones I have ever met that are even semi able to hold an intelligible conversation are in on line comment sections when they are telling you they have autism.... I mean. I asked my sister what is a " Normal neurotype" autism. She doesn't even fully understand what autism means let alone neuro divergences. because she barely understands that she is autistic.

    • @KonradTheWizzard
      @KonradTheWizzard ปีที่แล้ว +7

@@wolfrahmphosphoros5808 "Neurotypical" person here: sorry, from my perspective some autistic behavior is a significant deviation from what I call normal (i.e. "average", "typical") behavior. But then again - normal is boring and our differences make us better as a society.
Please don't judge body modders too harshly - as the doctor said: medical scientists are not yet entirely sure whether this is neurological, psychological and/or at the extreme edge of healthy behavior or maybe a different combination in every case. So we don't know whether it is a real problem yet. Until we know for sure what the reason is we have no right to label it an "illness".
By the way: this label of "shut in" is something that some very extroverted people use on anyone who is introverted - it is a lack of imagination and empathy on their part (ironic, I know). I like solitude as well - it helps me concentrate and work. For me it is just easier to smile and convince people I'm fine when I'm clearly angry they disturbed my concentration.

Well, you taught me one today, Doc, a new word: Sterno-clavicular joint. It also, has finally resolved a mild anxiety I'd had for about twenty years... One morning, I woke on my left side, and, as I sat up, could feel a kind of 'tension' across my upper-left chest and shoulder. I rolled and then extended my shoulders backward, almost the kind of motion as in X-Men 3, when Angel's wings extend and then settle. As I did this, there was a popping sensation and sound from my collarbone area, which I was momentarily alarmed by, but also immediately felt the tension release, a bit like cracking my knuckles. Since then, when I sleep on that side, I will often experience the same thing, and know that all I need do is 'roll my shoulders'/'flex my wings', and it will pop and release...
But now, thanks to yourself, I know that there actually *is* a joint there, and it *is* simply the joint cracking, as I can do with my knuckles, wrists, neck, lumbar, and occasionally the right ankle which I fractured skate-boarding while about 9-10 years old (all these joint manipulations are done slowly and gently, unlike those Y-Strap neck-crackers 🥴🥴🥴🥴) So it's nice to know that it literally is a true joint shifting, and not anything more sinister 👍👍👍👍

I've been fascinated with body modification ever since I got my first piercing at 16. I wouldn't characterise anything I have as particularly extreme, and generally go for things that most people aren't going to see. For example, my most extreme piercing I have is a 4g stretched septum. I always have jewellery in, but usually have it inverted, so unless you staring directly up my nose, you'd never know. I was never into the 'transhumanist' side of things. I thought it was cool, but it never spoke to me. One of the most heavily modified people in the world, she goes by 'Dragonlady', started modifying her body after she suffered absolutely horrific, brutal, abuse and torture at the hands of others, and her goal is to become the furthest thing away from them, human, as she possibly can. But if you listen to any interviews with her, she is still incredibly kind, caring and wonderful. After experiencing some similar instances, no where near the level that she had to endure, I can now say that I absolutely understand where she's coming from.

The one that stood out to me the most was a double nostril piercing (one piercing in each nostril, high up), with a chain over the bridge of her nose linking the two piercings. I remarked upon it because I'd never seen chain piercings in that way before, and I thought it looked a lot safer and far less scary (in terms of risk of injury) than the ear-to-nostril or ear-to-lip chain piercings I've seen in the past.
If you're open to suggestions of things to review, I'd be interested in seeing you review mountaineering injuries, both fatal and non-fatal. My understanding is that pulmonary illnesses due to lack of oxygen, or exposure to the elements, are the most common causes of death on the highest of mountains, though those are survivable if the team is able to react speedily enough to get the climber back down the mountain. But I'd still be interested in hearing the perspective of an orthopedic surgeon when it comes to high-altitude mountaineering injuries and accidents.

My mother had a stroke this Jan 4th. She went to a specialty hospital for surgery to stop the bleed and they found an aneurism, then caused another bleed. She spent three months in rehab wishing to die because a robot had taken over her left leg and an orphan girl named Judy was using her left hand. These imaginings continued until she fell and broke her wrist, thinking she was able to walk and hold onto things while she, the girl and the alien ran her body as a collective. After two months in rehab she came home seemingly well but still weak on her left side. We thought she was mentally better until she asked me when her doctors appointment to remove the wires from her leg was scheduled. I have given up trying to get her to do "mirroring" with her hand and leg. She acts like that side of her body doesn't exist anymore.
The brain issues between her strokes/aneurism/brain surgery had stalled and she continues to decline.

6:37 this is absolute a legitimate question and NOT intended to spark controversy. I fully support anyone to do whatever they want with their body.... that being said. If removing perfectly healthy limbs and other body parts is considered unethical by medical standards, how does gender reassignment work? Would that not fall under the same category? Removing perfectly functioning body parts because the person feels like it doesn't fit their body?

I'm an artist who has spent a lot of time on the weirder parts of the toobs, and in my experience, the extreme body mod people do not have good outcomes. I'm sure some well-known ones may, I'm talking about relatively unknown people from forums, groups, chats, blogs, festivals, galleries, concerts, etc over almost 30 years
Several amuptating BIID people in these places ended themselves, especially if what what wrong cleared. Some were doing drugs and had such severe regret upon sobering up, they did too.
I've had in-depth conversations with a handful (the old Internet was an interesting basis for studying psychology..) of the extremes OL and more moderate body modifiers IRL and the extreme community was a different animal.
I think people with BIID need therapy, much like those seeking ridiculous/repetitive plastic surgery procedures. The last thing you wanna do is make a sick person sicker, right?
I wish the extreme artists the best, I understand the need to be creatively unique, but oh my god, I have seen some things. Be creative but try to love yourself, you don't want a colostomy bag or a jaw replacement before 25 for a "vibe"

Now, if I were to get a bilateral (TKA), through the knee amputation, that would allow me to utilize prosthetics so that I could be able to walk again. Would that be ethical for a surgeon to follow up on? Or would I just be deemed as crazy because I wanted to walk again and willing to go through any means necessary to make that happen.

I was also in a car accident and, although I have scars, I healed very quickly. I think the people in this video have issues, especially when you want to be in a wheelchair, that to me is the most horrific. Some more words about BIID, that will maybd help people understand this diaorder a little bit further: affected people describe it as a feeling like that limb doesn't belong to them. It feels more like a strangers limb attached to your body. And to a certain degree, they don't feel like they're the one controlling that body part.
So just imagine being touched by a strangers hand while showering, whenever you open your eyes at night the hand laying next to your face isn't yours, and that strange hand is fixed to your body.
To me, that thought helped to at least kind of relate to the disturbed way these individuals feel about those limbs and why they wish to amputate them.
