Black Excellence!! I've never seen a college band come close to this performance of Execution, formation and precision. Walter Harris (Doc) was "Legendary Greatness" rest well.
This was doing my junior year; 2nd year in the band. We would practice day and night, until we perfected it; sometimes without the band director. In New Orleans, we are taught (at an early age) about being the best and putting in hard work. Our band Director back then (the late Walter F. "Doc" Harris) would push us. I had the fortune of meeting him when I was a kid when he taught my Aunt at Carter G. Woodson Jr. High in the 1970s. Need less to say, where I was going to high school at . . . "The K." as we called it :-)
I am a St. Aug Graduate and Prep Graduates Family and 3rd Generation BandHeads, the fascination and awesomeness is: Kennedy was the only high school band and high school marching units which could be a Human Jukebox Jr and 'Lil SU. That required advanced skill and they were High School KIDS. That's damn near impossible to perform and excute like college kids. It's the band director and arranger who create the formula but without the talent and skill of the children it could not create and execute the solution (see the video). 100!
THANKS FOR RECOGNIZING THAT MY BROTHER...IM SURE ALL MY BANDMATE BROTHERS REALLY APPREICATE THAT. WE GAVE "BIRTH" TO THE HALFTIME SHOWS DONE AT KENNEDY IN THE EARLY 80'S THX TO FORMER JFK/SUBR DEDICATED "ALUMNIST.
Thank you for the completely. This was (I think my Junior Year playing in the Permission Section). The ironic part (for me), is that the band director (the late Walter F. "Doc Harris), taught at Carter G. Woodson Jr. High in the 1970's (in which he taught my and at CGW). When I was a kid, I went to CGW, played in the band and always wanted to go to St. Aug. to perform with them. We didn't have much money, so my mom and aunt, found out the Doc was teaching at Kennedy (through friends at our church, in which their son was due to be the Drum Major my Sophomore year at Kennedy). Doc meet my parents (in which he already knew them through my grandmother) and well, the rest is history; "Lord's of Sound"; 10,000 Watts; C/O' 88; miss and love you Doc; thanks for preparing all of us that passes through JFK for the future 🤎💯😇
