Track Vs. Track: Beach Boys "Love You" takes on a blank 8-track tape.

- This is my first "Track Vs. Track" video where I place two musical entities next to each other and they battle it out song-by-song. In this case it's the 1977 album from the Beach Boys, "Love You" taking on a blank Memorex 8-track tape (circa 1977). Which one will be the champion?
This is a fabulously funny video.
You are brilliant. Comparing this album to a blank 8 track is genius , but I think the Beach boys did it first.
This is one of your best undercover troll episodes ahahaha.
Man you had me laughing so hard during the pat your butt part “oh a finger got loose!” 😂😂😂
Robert, I love your channel, always brings such joy. That is a very hilarious and correct critique of the beach bums. You are a truly delightful person.
This is hilarious!
I happen to really dig Love You…one of my favorite BB’s albums. I appreciate the humor regardless!!!
“Dennis seemed like the normal one.” __ Charles Manson
Lol !! That says a lot 😂🤣
i think it was Frank Zappa who stated that the best way to point out absurdity was to be absurd. Well here's your proof.
Absolutely!
The Jonathan Swift of You Tube. Genius. You're opening a Pandora's box of conspiracy theories with things like, "This Beach Boys was the first new wave album." Love it! Keep creating Mr. Fithin's Alternate Music History!
Drugs, Johnny Carson, and outer space. What's not to like? I f*cking love this album. 👍
All promise and no delivery.
@@RobertFithen All sizzle and no steak? 🤔
Already 1 minute into it and I will vote for the 8 track right now.....does not disappoint. Thanks.
Ding dang, Robert! Hilarious video. Should you do more of these Track vs Tracks? Gosh darn, yeah! 😆👍
I’m glad that Beach Boys fans don’t get nearly as offended as other fan groups. I’m a Beach Boys fan myself but sometimes you just gotta admit that it’s not everyone’s taste.
I’m also a huge Bob Dylan fan, I’ve seen him twice and have heard every single note that man has ever played, every studio, live, and bootleg album I can get my hands on, but if I criticize ONE thing the Dylan fan group goes BALLISTIC. If I say I’m not a fan of the Plant Waves album all of a sudden I’m “not a true fan” or I “just don’t understand it.” At least Beach Boys fans have the decency to take some valid criticism 😂😂
I think that's just due in part of how fucked up their history was/is. Dylan isn't nearly as chaotic as a person despite his image being nowhere near as squeaky clean. So BB fans give everyone the benefit of the doubt since we all know it always gets worse.
Tbf, not really a fan of their stuff pre-late-'64 or anything after 15 Goose Eggs.
Beach Boys fans can go quite ballistic, too. It's just that U think those particular fans don't watch my channel anymore. Lol
I love this album for some reason but this was hilarious and very true
Very Good Robert, completely different. Thank you
Pet sounds is a work of a mad genius. But Love You is just mad ...
I saw the title of this video and told my wife, "there's no way he makes an entire track vs track between these". You crazy sunuva... you did it. And now my wife can't listen to Beach Boys anymore. She was cringing at those lyrics. 😂 Well done, sir. Well done.
My work here is done. Lol
The genius of 8-track tape was it's endless loop.
Blank 8-track is one of my 5 desert island albums...Beach Boys gonna have a tough go against it!
Pet Sounds VS Aja? That would be fun.
haha you beat me to it, I was about to say the same thing.... could we have 2 losers? that would be a first but Im sure Robert can do it ;-)
I can see a lot of confusion out there. But for me it is completely clear and distinct.
This one is no joke ! I mean it, NO JOKE ! This one is damn serious !
But it makes me laughing anyway..... Thank you😂
Great video! Good laughs on this Thursday. I had the chance to buy that beach boys album for .25 cents, I didn't get it. But I DO have that double Johnny Carson album.
I think that's what I paid for it a few decades ago.
I always liked "Love You" but I didn't ever pay attention to the lyrics, I just liked the Moog.
I have never heard a blank 8-track, so I will have to take your word for it's domination in this battle..
A true Beach Boys fan accepts that they’re lame and that’s ok
I'm a huge Beach Boys fan and I really like this album but your hate and satire of their stuff is always so fun to watch 🤣 great work
Sir, your festering grievance against the Beach Boys runs very deep. I also hate them.
Thanks for the vid as always!
After seeing this video and with great consideration, I have to agree. The nice silence on the 8 track prevents you from suffering. Only if the Beach Boys could have left the suffering part out.
Brian’s wife, Marilyn, recorded an album with her sister as Spring (or American Spring). Two highlights: “Sweet Mountain” and “Fallin’ In Love.”
Hi Robert, I'm glad to see you're looking and feeling better. That Covid can really take it out of you.
Thanks!
Brilliant and hilarious Robert, this is gold!
I had a blank 8 track that came along with a bundle deal from Radio Shack, good ole gosh dern Realistic brand.
I did record music on it but I can't recall what it was, it wasn't the Beach Boys for sure.
Yes, please do another one of these!
In case you didn't know on the blank Memorex 8-track there is a "bonus" cut. However there is 20 minutes of silence before the "bonus" track
The Beach Boys did it first! lol
I was watching this on an AEROplane - I laughed so hard I nearly dropped my Brian Wilson coloUring book (ages 15 and under).
Brian Wilson colouring book. Now that IS genius.
In all seriousness, I hear a lot of this album in early They Might Be Giants.
I don't really care for them. lol
@@RobertFithenThat makes sense. Lol!
They do seem more nerdy than child-like. Songs like "Particle Man" are more well-written than something "Solar System".
Johnny Carson is a real live wire! I have this LP because I found it in a thrift shop, but my daughter was so disturbed by the album jacket, she told me not to play the record. I did play it twice, and it just did not grab me 🙂
I can definitely understand a daughter being disturbed by this album.
I'm absolutely pissing myself. I nearly chocked on my doughnut
My work is done. Lol
I never knew there were blank 8 Track tapes for sale. I learned something today 😊.
The cover art work looks like something you would see in a Nintendo game.
So ahead of their time. Lol
Not just against a blank cassette, but an 8-track. Cold!
This is brilliant. I honestly thought about requesting you review this, but I didn't have the heart after putting you through Smiley Smile. I actually somewhat enjoy this album (I love 70s Moog), but it is BEGGING for this kind of video. Especially with the CREEPY lyrics.
"BUT THE JOHNNY CARSON SONG IS A METAPHOR FOR BRIAN WILSON (WHO IS A GENIUS)."
And obviously John only married Yoko and Paul only married Linda because they were inspired by the Beach Boys.
That was funny! 😅I love The Beach Boys Love You, but - speaking of the lyrics - I'm probably lucky that English isn't my fist language. 😁 In the end they're only innocent songs though. Steven Tyler was actually having an affair with an underaged girl at the time. As far as I know Brian Wilson cannot be accused of that.
You’re breaking my heart!! 😂😂
That's Harry Nillson. Different genius.
Before digital, the audio from the local NBC affiliate could be picked up, sometimes in stereo, at the very start of the radio dial, and I ran cassette on and fell asleep to Carson, SNL, SCTV and Letterman so many times, and leading in small part to a career in radio.
You forgot to mention that Roger McGuinn co wrote that 57 second piece on the lp.. amazing that he needed a co writer on that one
I remember colliding with Patti Smith in a crowded Oslo street in summer of 2012. We both had a laugh because we tried the same short cut and both fell. Lenny Kaye was watching in disbelief. Turns out we were all at the Beach Boys concert the previous night… which Lenny wrote was history in the making. Just a little anecdote. I do find this video very funny. As always great stuff.
That must have been amazing.
Well said, Sir!
Quite a coincidence.
I picked up a load of 8 tracks from a charity shop some years ago. I ended buying an 8 track recorder to play them and liked it so much I bought a few cheap carts from time to time.
In that original lot though I got a complete set of Beach Boys carts as well as some sealed blank carts too.
And much like you, I prefer the banl carts to the majority of the Beach Boys ones. There's only one that comes close and that's "The History of the Owl" by Michael Aspel - a dull piece of edutainment.
Hi Robert - greetings from Liverpool - I remember our music teacher playing us the whole of Pet Sounds in 1966 when it first came out and we thought it was great - I sometimes think looking back that all subsequent BBs albums would have to at least at bit of disappointment compared to that - the first big disappointment was 15 Big Ones with just some tracks that were okay - Love You came out in 1977 just before I got married - I have to admit overall I quite like it as it really is different! I can also understand it not being everyone’s cup of tea - I think The Night Was So Young and I Bet He’s Nice are good tracks - I think it’s remarkable that Brian Wilson’s music, in my opinion mostly good, was made when he was experiencing severe mental health and drug issues, is still worthy of discussion today - perhaps paradoxically this shows that he does have a lasting relevance - by the way a notoriously bad BBs album is Summer in Paradise - listening to that is worse than a ten year prison sentence! Best wishes! Daniel
As a SoCal kid, I dug their harmonies but was embarrassed by the matching surfer outfits and baffled by the Sesame street song topics (My School, My Room, My Car, etc). Later, I read about a guy who could play Bach note for note, but only had the maturity of a 4 year-old...called an "idiot savant". After that, I felt understanding and sympathy for Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys...except the cover art for Pet Sounds...that was just wrong.
Love is love.
If you taught English to the prisoners at Guantanamo and played them this album there would be no need for water boarding
I remember when this came out the big Brian Wilson’s back and how much it sucked and I’ve been listening to The Beach Boys since 1963 3:12
Finally... thank you! 🤣
But see, you need to listen to Beach Boys Love You recorded onto a blank 8-track. That's how the "in" crowd does it, man.
On this 8 track, there would even be room for "15 Big Ones"
Only for true Beach Boys fans, but they love to love "Love You." They might be mildly offended by this, but hey, at least Beach Boys fans don't get as offended as Deadheads when you don't worship every note by the Dead! At the very least The Beach Boys always had strong melodies and harmonies and incredible voices that are in tune. Haven't listened to this one in probably 20 years or so, so don't remember all the details.
Idk. The Deadheads I know have very specific hates. Variously and collectively, they hate Donna, they hate certain songs, they hate the studio albums, they hate Drums/Space and overly weird noodlings. And not to mention Bob's slide work lol
You are 100% spot on regarding Deadheads.
I have always liked the Grateful Dead and have reviewed a few of their albums, always favorably. I said something negative about ONE SONG on an album once and got heat for just that in the comments. (Their cover of "Dancing In the Street")
@@RobertFithen nice! Haven’t gotten around to seeing that one yet, but you do have a ton of videos! I like the dry humor! And you show a lot of really cool records.
Some folks just don’t get The Beach Boys. Their loss
Your hilarious comment was predicted in the video.
The Beach Boys could be used as a frisbee and roach material. I'd pick it over the 8 track.
Maybe "Man-child" was a character, like David Bowies "The Thin White Duke" or Ziggy Stardust. Brian Wilson's other "character" is "The Genius."
He's more believable as "Man Child".
I also think the Beach Boys stink , but I really must take my hat off to Robert's activism . It is truly commendable and will save many people from the horror of hearing them for the first time
Have you listened to “wonderful” from the smile sesssions
you can tell how much this guy adores The Beach Boys. I mean even he admits it invented synth pop and new wave. He also calls Brian Wilson a genius. 😂😂😂
Would love to hear your take on MIU. Another one of my favorite BB’s albums. Hey Little Tomboy…
I don't think I've ever heard that one.
@@RobertFithenOh, you’re in for a treat. Read the lyrics for Hey Little Tomboy.
Thanks for another great video! This was hysterical. Memorex was good enough for Ella 🎶💞
The Memorex is also a box set. I'm betting there isn't a Love You one
Give it time. Lol
I believe there will be cause of two magic words, Copyright Extension. Personally as a Beach Boys dork I'm looking forward to it cause it will hopefully have stuff from The Beach Boys' abandoned 1974 album and a rejected 1977 album Adult Child that actually has some pretty great tracks like Lines and Everybody Wants to Live.
Foghat doesn't blow anyone away....
Love this album (seriously) but your criticism of the Beach Boys kills me every time. Brian is a GENIUS (seriously).
Man, I hope you do another one of these 🤣🤣 💀
I'll probably do a proper one.
The dangers of being surrounded by yes men. That's the Beach Boys not the Memorex. Some of the language and phrases on the Beach Boys reminds me of Ned Flanders from the Simpsons?
Absolutely incredible video ... Never heard of it until your video, listened to it...and it actually may be the worst album I've ever heard 😞 Garbage. So spot on and one of your best vids!
Thanks!! I think the album is pretty much indefenseable.
In my top hundred albums of all time I always put the Memorex 90 in the number one spot.
Brian Wilson is a genius. Brian Wilson is a genius. Brian Wilson is a genius. Brian Wilson is...not a Memorex tape. And that's a good thing.
The lowkey Beach Boys assessment over here always cracks me up. 😂
He's certainly no John Arcesi.
I also thought it was weird when football players would pat each other on the butt. Spanking not appropriate now either
Feels a little cruel taking on a tortured, manipulated, abused genius like Brian Wilson. But if you're good with that, why not do a track-by-track of a Wesley Willis album? I'd suggest Greatest Hits from 1995.
Big difference between Wilson and Willis, but nice try.
I didn't bother going back to double check, but I think you forgot to say which one won between the recod and lbank tape on track 4. The Rolls Royce of 8 track tape decks in an Akai that actually has some demand, and can get hunreds of dollars at times. It's Quadraphonic too. You don't need to buy and install a Quadrophinic phono cartridge. Just pop a Quad 8 track in and you have 4 channel sound.
I wonder what would win between The Sound Of Silence by Simon & Garfunkel and the blank 8 track? I am going to compare a Mose Allison lp and a blank 8 track tomorrow. It's the album with his song about not worrying
"But I don't worry." "I never worry, because I know nothing is going to be alright "
I bet Brian Wilson would have liked to have educated children about Uranus in the solar system 🤔 Well, maybe not yours but his. You seem to like like the Beach Boys as much as I do!
The Memorex 8-track wins this contest hands down 🏁
Brian in Fort Worth 🎶
How about Smokey Robinson "Gasms" vs CD Laser Lens Cleaner?
News Alert Robert! The news just broke that they are re-releasing Memorex 90 blank 8 track but on CD and remastered by Rick Rubin
Analogue Productions $300 vinyl coming soon...
@@RobertFithen
One of your funniest and most astute videos ever Robert! I do have to mention that you forgot to give credit to the Beach Boys for actually inventing the guitar, both acoustic and electric...little known fact!
Excellent video! 🤣
Lyrics aside I still think Good Time and I Bet He’s Nice are ok tunes. But it’s an appalling album.
I always thought Student Demonstration Time was the worst Beach Boys song ever but Honking Down The Highway is surely worse?
So many dreadful lyrics on this album
I will pat my 26 year olds butt at some point soon. Maybe he will find it so unacceptable that he moves out. You know the proverbial push from the nest lol.
ELLA FITZGERALD LIVE OR MEMOREX COMMERCIAL REINVENTED HER STAR
and there was broken glass everywhere!
Nah, I think they're trying to be polite and curse. When you're The Beach Boys, edginess doesn't compute in this dojo.
By the title alone and the fact that you have dissed the Beach Boys in previous videos, I assume this is going to be hillarious. Not a BB fan myself, but I've listened to this album on streaming and I gotta say, it's definately an "interesting" album.
If it came out today, I think the authorities would be interested.
Creepy and cringey lyrics. Why do you have this odd album in your collection?
You naughty man. 😂
I don’t like the Memorex because they had re-order the tracks to make them fit and it messed up the vibe
Is it live or is it Memorex? No, it’s The Beach Boys! LOL
I actually liked “Loves You”! It wasn’t about the “hit single” with this album, but more about just Brian coming back to the fold even more than “15 Big Ones” was.
Hadn’t heard this album before. Had a quick listen on Spotify before I listen to your review. I thought it was a duff album, only liked two songs.
Someone’s voice seems to be breaking up too - dunno if it’s Carl or Brian?
This was awesome!! However Robert, there is not need for you to consider an actual "Track vs Track" bit in the future; they're kind of silly. You're better than that.
Is it my mind or is it Memorex?
Clever joke. And i love this album.
aRE yOU ARK hAMELLS TWIN BROTHER ?
Q1. How were you able to keep a straight face? Q2. What are you even doing with that BB LP in your possession? Q3. Next time, would you consider some real competition, like Mrs,. Miller's Greatest Hits, or The Shaggs' Philosophy of the World, vs. "Still Crusin'"? Great video Robert.
I'm not quite sure what's wrong with you, but I like it.
Love the 8 track better had endless summer hardly listened too had toys in the attic too van halen what i hated about 8 tracks was ehen it switched right in the middle of a song makes makes me think of the shinning heres johnny!i think the real good times show would of beat the crap ouf the peddling dynamite!
I love blank 8-Tracks. Nice white or pink noise (probably too erratic to determine) sometimes followed by 10 seconds of balloon on bicycle spokes kind of sound then the satisfying kachunk of the move to the next track. Nothing sounds like that anymore. Have you digitized it? I hope the Beach Boys haven't copyrighted it yet.
HON KEY GOING DOWN THE HIGHWAY
Get off the Beach Boys man. There's other music to criticize, the bit is beat
Nah, I still like doing it. And they have so many albums.
You know when someone obsessively dislikes something, to where it consumes them and becomes their only focus and compromises their ability to relate to others outside of their obsession? I like the obscurities, recommendations, appreciation for krautrock, and Kaleidoscope, and stuff like that, but this isn't entertaining at all, and is actually pretty tough to watch.
@@RobertFithenI love The Beach Boys yet I agree with all your criticism.
Is Her Voice REAL or Memorex dj discoworm
Whenever I see Brian Wilson on stage he gives me the kind of nervous feeling that Biden gives me. You know what the hell is he doing and oh my God what is he going to do next
lmao
Trashing the tremendously overrated Beach Boys is just fine with me. I hate that band, and I hate the hype that has been churned up about Pet Sounds etc.. I detest that band and their sound. Well done!! I love what you used for a comparison. Great sarcasm as always!
Thanks!!
I skipped to the end. Can someone tell me the one pathetic Beach Boys song that won?
The night was so young
@@canario3304what a great track
It is not a fair comparison. You should have gone with a Scotch 8 track.
Do now Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits vs Donald Trumps loose dentures:)
