I recently bought a copy of The Beatles' Story at an antique shop, and what sold me what the original owner left her name and Beatlemania scribblings all over the inside of the foldout. I could visualize her writing "Beatles forever" and "Ringo for president" while listing to the album. I just love it!

I love looking at original LPs with writing on them. I think it would be a pretty cool coffee table book to have pictures of LPs that were written on by their owners.

Andrew, your foresight and attention to detail is why I am a member and patron of this channel. From a "what does this mean for future releases that we know are in the pipeline" standpoint, this release is definitely a head scratcher. Apple has alternated trying to bury these releases, and whenever they do return to them, seem to miss the mark in some manner. Being a first generation US fan, this was a no-brainer for me. Much like the Macca 45 box, this is as much a time capsule of a period of my life as it is the latest Beatles product. Having been stashing Amazon points for what I thought was going to be the Rubber Soul set, this release became extremely affordable. I'm not a big collector of colored vinyl, but I did also preorder the Target Meet The Beatles. Can't wait for your unboxing video!

In my case I probably wouldn't go as far as hating the US albums - after all, I do have vinyl and CD copies of all of them. The "purist" tag might be more applicable to me. The Beatles themselves and George Martin never approved these mixes or album configurations. But once every decade or so, Apple is willing to reissue them in a format which is historic, nostalgic, and profitable.

@@alanlinfield8207 I have both an Original Hard Day's Night (US) and an early UK pressing. On my Vacuum Tube (valve) "Control" (Integrated) Amplifier with Vintage NOS tubes, with a Bang & Olufsen Turntable through better than average speakers (so nowhere near high end audiophile) the Parlophone HDN on many of the songs give the sub-conscious reflex action to look up at the person in the room singing, to the point of almost being scary. I have original (in almost near mint condition) US originals, and although nostalgic, never have I had the same experience...memory flashbacks to sixty years ago listening to the record, but nowhere near the unsettling feeling.

I was born in 1962 and heard the Beatles on am radio growing up. My family was too poor to buy any extra entertainment items.
So, in 1972 a neighbor boy that lived next door to my uncle, was being drafted into the Army for Vietnam.
This neighbor gave all of his Capitol Beatles albums to my uncle (Who was not a Beatles fan). My uncle in turn...asked our family (5 boys) if we wanted these albums. We took them ALL!

I was raised in the UK but live now in Canada. When building back my collection, I acquired the original Capitol US and Canadian originals and reissues as they were cheaper and easier to find than UK versions. They have their charms, the US Rubber Soul, MMT, and Hey Jude are worthy additions to any collection. And, hearing non-UK album singles within an LP sequence certainly brings a fresh perspective in a broader context. The main benefit I can see for the audophile is that new analogue pressings will be available for the first time in the best part of 60 years. Most of my mono originals were clearly well loved - usually by teenage girls if the names on the covers are anything to go by - and cared for with all the attention one gives to discarded gift wrap on Christmas morning. I do worry about sound quality though. we are essentially looking at several generations down master taps after all the folding down and "Dexterization" even if they are the original Capitol masters. I'll probably pick them up singly, it will save some money and avoid the ghastly Beatles Story. I'll make my own box from cereal packets.

@glennogden6613 Just wondering if you ever acquired the Canada-only LPs, Beatlemania, Twist & Shout or Long Tall Sally? Also very hard to find in good condition, but often better-sounding than their U.S. counterparts due to using U.K. master tapes. Amazingly, they stayed in print well into the 1970s.

@moxievision A very good comment. I have the three, a mix of originals, and reissues. The Twist and Shout cover is one my favourites across all releases, it captures the energy and fun of Beatlemania as it hit the scene. A limited edition Capitol Canada 3LP reissue would be a great box set to have come to think of it.

@@glennogden6613 I'd love to have repressings of the three Canuck LPs, maybe in a box set with a bonus Love Me Do (Ringo version) 7" on the orange/yellow swirl Capitol label, as originally issued in Canada (perhaps in a better-sounding needledrop transfer). Just like original mono U.S. LPs, it's extremely hard to find the Canuck albums in decent shape, I've gone through many copies of each of them to get to versions I consider playable. I'm not sure what other Canada-only oddities exist, apart from the coloured vinyl reissues that came later in the 1970s.

"Mocked by purists" is certainly true - sometimes it is overzealous and over the top! Many countries had unique track listings on their Beatles LPs, and I'll wager the US versions outsold them all.
I grew up in America, born in 1969. I got my first copy of Meet the Beatles in 1979, with Second Album following for Christmas that year. They were the most exciting things I'd ever heard...still are, in fact!

    • @KebabMusicLtd

It's not just purists. Being British, I originally had all the UK releases on LP format plus Rock N Roll Music. In 1999 I bought the Yellow Submarine CD which convinced me to buy the entire UK album releases in CD format when they were released in 2009. I also bought Past Masters I & II and John Lennon's Image Movie soundtrack. I would have bought them sooner but I was waiting for the upgrade of the CDs to match the same quality as that 1999 release.
I always felt that Capitol butchered the Beatles albums. In the UK everything to do with the group is viewed as a high-standard of quality. The US releases just seemed like a cash-grab to me. I'm also surprised that Capitol haven't included the Paul solo album that Dexter had been planning to push from 1965.

I had all the UK versions from the time I was 12 so I knew both US and UK (as well as many other unique worldwide comps). I re-bought everything on CD in 2009 as well. "Mocked by purists" is a quote from the video and it resonates with me because I grew up with the misguided revisionist attitude that the US releases were garbage. They're not, they are all Beatles music the last I checked. Anyway, I disagree that they were butchered, and if they were a cash grab they were very successful! Much cash was grabbed. Including mine! @@KebabMusicLtd There's a website that lists all the Capitol records and what was used for the stereo and mono mixes. There are some US-exclusives that I think are worth having, I own both. To this day I find the US Rubber Soul version superior in that the songs fit together in a folk-rock motif amazingly well. Yesterday...And Today has always been my favorite Beatles album growing up and still, and I have a couple '66 mono pressings that are absolutely fantastic that stand toe-to-toe with any UK record I have.
The issue with Capitol in the day is simply that they just wanted to press and ship as many records as possible, so the stampers were allowed to wear down more and create inferior pressings. But I find the music itself on a good pressing to be as enjoyable to any other releases.

Mine might be fake, given it sounds rather tinny and lifeless, like phone speakers. It's also important to note that Capitol from 1965-1967 or so was not the greatest source of quality pop records, they pressed them fast with no care so they have a higher intrinsic noise (see: original copies of Pet Sounds).

Andrew: Once again, a superb video. Like most Americans who were teen age (or pre-teen) in 1964, I grew up with these horribly inferior releases. I didn't understand how bad they were until I purchased my first UK copy in circa 1972. From there, I started gobbling up as many Parlophone, Odeon and Japanese pressings I could get my hands on. Despite all the hype over various incarnations on vinyl and CD, I still hold that the original UK pressings are the best sonically. I understand that the grass is always greener, and the novelty factor of owning Capitol releases may be very enticing to UK or Europe based fans. I will look forward to your review. But I'm one serious US fan who is very skeptical of this project. I say, bring the Shea Stadium show back to life, as well as a complete re-work of Rubber Soul. Keep up the great work!!

I think part of the problem was how much reverb a lot of radio stations used in those days and those AM stations would be mono. So kids here would be used to a ton of reverb on their hit records. This was a ton of information in this video and Andrew was spot on. Great video.

Sorry but the cd version of the capital box 1 & 2 are fine. They are mono and stereo, what I would like to see is the original albums remixes and fixed with the Dave Dexter treatment. Thanks for getting this out so quickly to tell us what's up!
I **Just** bought the US albums CD box set this summer! So many people complained about the mixes used, but I was buying physical Beatles albums for the first time in years, I wanted the best, current mixes, not fold-downs and false-stereo, etc.
I already knew and loved Meet The Beatles and Something New, my introduction to earlier Beatles songs beyond the Red compliation and Live at BBC. I got the CD box set in part to see if any of the other pre-Rubber Soul US albums held up like Meet The Beatles and Something New. The short answer is Yes - just The Beatles Second Album. And Beatles '65 is a close runner-up.
I planned on getting decent vinyl copies of Meet the Beatels and Something New anyway one day, was intrested in Second Album. But that's it.
The box price is prohibitive. As much as i'd love to have the whole box set, I don't need it, shouldn't really be spending the money on it, and it's far from a good deal. I may just get the two or three records I want, and leave it at that. The box price is prohibitive.

Fascinating Andrew, thank you. I found a near mint copy of Meet the Beatles in mono. I bought it for collector purpose and put it in a record frame to hang in my man cave. But first, I gave it a spin. I happily switched to my mono cartridge and cracked a beer and prepared for great sound. Boy was I disappointed! It sounds like DIRT! Interesting that its simply a fold down of the stereo mix. That explains it! Since I already have UK stereo and mono copies of their discography, I won’t need this set. I’m with the masses, disappointed that it isn’t Rubber Soul this year. A good mono press without the distortion on “Michelle” is the only Beatle album on my want list now.

    • @twogruden9943
      @twogruden9943 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yeah, only I Want to Hold Your Hand and This Boy were true mono mixes, the others were fold-downs. The stereo pressings were probably better. I will say that just because a record is in good condition doesn't mean the sound is good, it just depends on the pressing, and Capitol ran their stampers far longer than they should in the 60s. They didn't care because the customers were mostly kids playing on cheap mono record players.

I will be buying the box as my 50 year old stereo US albums could use an upgrade. And while I have a very happy nostalgic feeling for The Beatles Story, I don’t need another copy and feel a little ripped off at the difference in price between the individual albums total and box set price even though there are some deals. But I’m a sucker for box sets so I’ll pay. I do hope they get around to all the album deluxe sets eventually. I’ll be looking forward to your in depth review later in the year.

You should count yourself lucky. All the LPs in this set in the UK are much more expensive than in the US. It means the box set in the UK is not massively different compared to buying the individual albums but still much more than in America. I did read somewhere that the US records are subject to a 6% or maybe 8% tax as they are classified as collectables so maybe that's why the American albums appear to be so much cheaper. As a Brit I find this very confusing as all our products have tax included so the price you pay is the price on the shelf.

I’m a millennial and a weirdo. I have all the OG UK mono, 2014 mono and interesting varieties of UK, German and Dutch version of the stereo mixes (you’ve seen my list!).
I have the capitol vol 1 & 2 on CD and I really enjoyed it. I thought that was good enough but recently I’ve been toying around with the idea of purchasing the US albums (typical symptom of enjoying the Beatles way too much). By the way, I lived in the US for the last 33 out of 41 years of my life, which makes this affair really funny. I feel like I’m the only Beatles fan living in US who doesn’t own a single US pressing. Anyways, based on everything I read I was told to avoid 60s and 70s pressings as they’re horrible in sound quality.
And then out of nowhere the announcement for this box set drops. A lot of people are crying “cash grab!” But I can’t be more happier. This is perfect for me!
…..but $120 for that non music album and the box??? Dude….
They’re going to do this again for stereo, aren’t they??
Edit: I lied. I do own few US pressings. Not as expensive as Beatles in Mono but still very pricey….. and it doesn’t sound that great either. Yes, I’m talking about the MFSL box set. It is pressed in Japan but it’s produced by US so I suppose it counts. The vinyl is beautiful and all the albums sound unique and interesting…. But sound wise, I prefer it the least amongst my collection.

Excellent information Andrew. If people are going to gritch about the price, they should consider this. The original release price of those mono press albums in 1964 was $2.98 ($3.98 stereo) USD each for the single albums and $5.98 ($7.98 for stereo) USD for the double "The Beatles Story". Adjusting for inflation this equates to $238.60 ($318.60 stereo) USD for the set. At $299.98 it is a premium over the original prices but the cost is inconsequential. These are not being stamped out at lightening speed with near little care at either the Scranton, PA or Los Angeles, CA Capitol pressing plants. They are careful re-masters, pressed on thicker and possibly virgin vinyl, include the tape info on the liner notes and, although no book, do co come in a handsome box to go with the other box sets.
While certainly not for everyone, they are a nice addition to the Beatlemaniac's collection. Being from the US, I had some of these Capitol mono albums I salvaged from the rubbish bin in the early 1970s. Nobody wanted them in their condition and certainly not in un-holy mono! It will be nice to finally hear clean version of them.

Hats off to you, Andrew for yet another fine and shorter-form video! This video serves to tease your future critical analysis of this box set. Your noting The Capitol Albums, Volume 2 (2006) and their original release with the incorrect fold-down mono mixes, bodes an interesting comparison, in yours and your audience’s near future. I have struggled mightily to find the so-called “corrected version“ of The Capitol Albums, Volume 2 box set. The prevailing wisdom among fellow collectors is that the hype sticker with the SK1 designation thereon is the indicator to look for when shopping for the corrected version. But I have found this not to be true, unfortunately. I endeavored to reach out to Capitol Records about this matter. But they had nothing to say. So, I am hoping that this new vinyl box set will pass your critical review and furthermore, that Capitol Records will release a CD version. Though I own 2014’s The U.S. Albums, I would pay for this - newly-mixed, mono-only set - on CD. Capitol caused much confusion and consternation over that 2006 set. Perhaps they’ll get it right, this time?

I went back and listened to them again, and they all sound good except for some of the last songs on a side, which I think is inner groove distortion. Maybe that is a wear issue. Since these albums are shorter than the UK versions, maybe they could leave more blank space at the end of the albums to reduce that?

I'm looking forward to 10:45 the Stereo Capitol Records Rubber Soul. I grew up with the false start on I'm Looking through you. I still think the Capitol Records Rubber Soul is a great Album enjoy the track listening

As usually a great video. I am happy yet puzzled with this release. Apple 🍏 threw us a curve big time as we were looking for Rubber Soul. I will try to buy this, but I may only be able to get maybe the first two albums as they are the best, imho. They look great, and even though I'm not a mono fan, I'm sure they will sound good. You said that the original US mono mixes are fold downs? Wow, that was pretty lazy of Capitol if true. I am assuming that a stereo set will be coming down the road. Thanks, Andrew, for always keeping us up to date.

Whilst I’m not willing to drop €350 on this vinyl set, I would like to hear these versions.
If Apple could now release an updated CD set I’d definitely buy it. I’m sure I’m not alone.

I find this box set cool to look at and as much as I'm also glad that these will be finally available again after 56 years... they're the only positive thoughts I have... and having to pay around $60 each for The Beatles Story (easily a throw away LP) AND the book (which, on the other hand, makes sense... kind of) that's a huge turnoff for me. I'll stick with my 2004 set (sealed) and the 2014 CDs.

Well it’s not the Rubber Soul box set, or even your suggested 1967/1968 era box set but as an American born in 1990 I grew up listening to my parents cd of (ironically Rubber Soul) and after noticing me getting hooked, I would get a cd for holidays/birthdays/my own money till I had all the cds/anthologies. But I do remember as a kid seeing a rubber soul vinyl at my grandparents house and my dad said that was his as a kid and we brought it home and taught me how to put the needle in the header and let it play, I was surprised to not hear Drive My Car and that was my first experience with a capitol release. I’ve since bought a Yesterday…and Today cause I like that tracklist and I can see myself getting a copy of Beatles ‘65 when these come out. But not the whole set. I bought the US albums box set and then regretted it when I saw your video saying it wasn’t true captiol mixes and wished I’d gotten the 2004 ones. Oh well. Anyway sorry for the long comment, in short, I’ll wait for year’s set, which I bet will be Rubber Soul as it turns 60 next year. Cheers, Andrew!

Dexterization! 😦 I think you make a very good point; i.e. Meet The Beatles as one of their more consequential releases. If these sound better than us mono og's then it is a good thing long term for indie record stores to continue carrying Beatles stock for Gen Z & beyond (we have 3, they love the Beatles).
