Youngsters will never understand.. “how fast is it?” “Can you run 8’s” “you have to build the whole thing?” To us who grew up when this first came out this was the king I remember rccaraction pulled a jeep across a parking lot with a stock clod with a weight bar strapped to the front.. lol I remember I had to do chores and work just to get a kit to put together and then work and wait to get a battery and radio system ..kids these days ..they will just never understand.. my first car was a kyosho raider. 100’s of thousands of dollars and 40 years later I still play with rc cars no matter how hard I try I always go back.. thank you for the time you spend bringing this hobby to you tube for all of us to enjoy
Whoever made the comment that it’s not scale thank you for defending our era. Hell its scale back then for us it was the coolest thing . I believe they called it a clod buster but if I had to guess over licensing issues it was modeled after a monster truck called Samson one. This is just another guess but that’s why Tamiya never made A Ford body like Bigfoot.
Thank you for the video. Like others that have commented, I am the owner of an original Clod Buster from 1987. I bought it via mail order from America's Hobby Center in 1987 and I think that it was about $220. Over the years it was completely modified with an ESP Clodzilla IV chassis/suspension and full JPS aluminum gearcases. After discovering the RCMT message board, I then created a full custom 6x6 monster semi truck from two Bull Head kits and a Sassy Chassis 6x6 chassis. I still have that minster semi, which I named "Chernabog." I still have my first Clod Buster though and I recently dusted it off after it was put in storage after I got married and became a family man. My little buy is just starting to get into R/Cs so I was thinking about getting back into Clod Busters. He really wants to see my old trucks run! One thing that I was wondering is, where are the R/C monster truck online message boards these days? I was a major user of RCMT.net back in the day (about 15+ years ago) but it seems that that message board no longer exists. Are there any online forums dedicated to just monster trucks these days? Thanks again for the video. It is bringing back so many wonderful memories for me!
Mate……. I will never forgot this model…. I was dreaming about it with my RC magazines, reading again and again reviews about it, and when I was finding one in the fantastic toys shop of my city, I was watching the box during a lonnnnng time, dreaming about it…… (was a little kid and this range of prices wasn’t possible to my family so I even didn’t ask or whatsoever, was just dreaming about it……..) Tamiya is SO appealing with their packagings, the colorful plastics etc. Everything… Japanese and their sense of details is really a pure joy and pleasure!! Thanks a lot for the video, big salut 🫡 from France. ViNZ.
If you wasn't a kid back in the 80's at the start of the monster truck boom you missed a lot. Bigfoot, vs USA1, plus all the other upstarts, it was great. Then Tamiya came out with the clodbuster. You couldn't ask for anything more as a kid that loved monster trucks.
That’s awesome. I remember running the mechanical speed control in my first year of racing the “production class” and hoping it wouldn’t go up in smoke during the main event. 🤣
Just going say remember smoke and fires , from the resistor , I recently found a frog 🐸 at a scrap yard , took home and mechanical speed control was melted
@@Cbam871 no not really , I didn't understand how he can say can't beat them , there are very simple basically just a switch operated by a servo needing the resistor for the left over energy which gets very 🔥
The Clod Buster has a special place in my heart. As a kid my friends neighbor had one sitting high up on a shelf and ever since then, before I knew what it was, I knew I had to have one. Didn't buy my clod until the early 2000's and I still have it with a new era chassis from RC4WD when they used to sell clod stuff, along with many upgrades. It will go to the grave with me. Last year I picked up a stock TXT-1 from Japan which I feel the same about. The Clod is why I have a room in my house just for my rc's haha. I gave away my 1st RC, a Super Blackfoot about 20 years ago and when I tried to get it back my friend sold it. I'm still trying to fill the void. I will be buying the black edition soon, can't have too many Tamiya rc's or monster trucks! Long time subscriber. Great video and couldn't have put it better myself!!!
Perfect timing on this video as I’m picking up my black edition from fed ex today! I was never able to get one when I was younger and can’t wait to get it built up. Mine will be for my grandson to introduce him to the hobby.
I still have mine from the mid 80’s. My dad and I stayed up on Christmas Day till like 2am working it but called it a night and finished it the next day. I knew these were popular back then but had no idea of their popularity today. Really glad I kept mine now. Thanks for sharing this video.
Love the Tamiya bounce ! My autistic son is 14 and just starting to focus enough to drive the snap on rock crawler and actually engaging in operation of it . I will be getting back into rc because of him . I was big into it ans got out after flying helicopters when he was born like T. rex 450-500 . My hopes he would like rc one day . Love these trucks as they are pretty tough great for beginners! I want a all chrome one lol
I remember a combination Toy and Hobby Shop in Ridgmar Mall in Ft. Worth, TX called Toys by Roy? anyway, I remember drooling over my two Grail RC kits: The Tamiya 1:16 Tiger 1 and the Clodbuster! they were unreachable for me back then, but finally got the Clod around 2004 or so. It was the most fun I've ever had building a kit.
That’s awesome! I’m glad you finally got one again after all these years. I know how that regret feels. Because back in the 80’s, my “clod buster regret memory” was the Tamiya monster beetle. It was my first ever hobby grade RC car. It’s long gone, lost in a move. But my LHS has the monster beetle in stock now. And I’m seriously considering grabbing one. Great video! Thanks for taking me back to the sounds of 80’s RC when I was a teenager 🤩
The original Clod Buster was the first RC Car I built on my own. I'd owned a 12th scale carpet racer and a grasshopper, but this was the first I built on my own. It was a lot of fun building. My neighbor and I broke that chassis maybe 6 times and repaired it with everything from tin sheets to pop cans. I finally got rid of it a couple years ago after not driving it for more than 20 years, but still kinda miss seeing it. I wish run time would have been longer back in the 80s, but with the two motors and HUGE tires, I never got more than about 5 minutes of runtime out of a pack. Still, it was a ton of fun.
ClodBuster I had one in 1987 great memories. People who don’t know this truck was so ahead of it time. The four wheel drive two motors the four wheel steer. Watching this video brings back the only weak link on truck was the corner of chassis where long trailing arm connected would always break. I must have put 10 chassis in that truck. Thanks for the smile
I still have mine from the 80s. I dug it back out last fall and gave a fresh coat of paint and a fresh battery. It definitely brought back memories of the past.
That truck was great. I used to put 3 batteries on it and throw it in the snow. And drive from inside and stay warm inside for like 30 minutes. I need another one
I agree with your comments in this video! It’s the quintessential monster truck from the 80’s and it’s perfectly to scale! When I first saw one when I was a kid I knew I wanted one. I didn’t get one until I was an adult and also sold it and have regretted it. I have had many since then and never get enough. I picked up another one and got home and saw this video and got to watch it while I worked on it. Thanks for the video!
People who criticise models like these aren't aware of the history. The OG Clodbuster was released in 1987, and back then the Jet Hopper/Turbo Hopper depending on region (about USD$60 at the time) and 4WD Bullet (about USD$80 at the time) were what most kids had, they were the typical RC car for anyone younger than a teenager. Those prices converted for inflation in today's money are staggering; Jet Hopper being USD$162 in today's money, and the 4WD Bullet being USD$216 in today's money. Spending that kind of cash today gets you a pretty darn good brushless setup in comparison! It's like the first hard drive in 1956, the IBM 305 RAMAC, with it's _whopping_ 3.75 megabyte capacity that cost the equivalent of $33,000 in today's money! The younger generation can't understand these models because the significance just isn't apparent, because the context is buried away nearly 4 decades ago. Sure these re-release kits might not be "scale" accurate, nor are they the back flipping, tyre shredding, 100mph beasts we get today. But back then, when these kits were the pinnacle of engineering, they were well and truly the most mind blowing fun you could have after your 7.2V battery fast charged from your parents car with the bonnet up!
Just picked one up! It was the last black addition at my local hobby shop and went on sale. I couldn’t resist not buying it! Can’t wait to build it !!!
I had a couple of tamiya rc cars back in the day I had the boomerang and the bull head the bull head was the same as the clod buster with a different shell I loved them this really brings back my childhood!!
Had one of these back in the 80's, 2 D cell battery packs dad wired up for me, 360 kyosho motors that thing went through snow, mud, floated on water by the time I started driving a car the tires were totally smooth on it. Then upgraded to the Tamiya Blazing Blazer.Kinda miss those days
I knew Larry from Sassy Chassis back in the day. I built a tricked out original Clod with a pair of Trinity Torque Zilla motors and a Zeta (sp?) Water proof Speed Controller. Aluminum gears boxes and wheels. Oil filled shocks and full cantilever suspension. Every after market part available. I dropped quite a bit of coin on that rig. 20 years later I sold on eBay for almost 3K.
I have an OG sassy chassis Clod with a fully chromed undercarriage. Some of the plastic was brittle and broken, so I bought the most correct aluminum replacements. Monster Mash 2 motors and blue heat sinks. I still need to buy a bowtie body and I'm drooling over a set of AJs foam slicks on fleabay right now but don't have the cash for them. I did make a custom aluminum servo plate to mount two servos midships like stock for the steering, and I'm using a three channel radio with a three position third channel for 4ws. I don't have or know about radios with channel mixing. Still a cool truck. I have a Traxxas bigfoot shell on it for now.
I remember the first time I saw the clod buster kit at my local hobby store. I marveled at the price and the never before seen features. As a kid with a paper route in the late 80's, clod buster was one of those unreachable kits. With paper route money and money for building tamaya kits for my friends, I was only able to afford the Striker and the cheapest Futaba transmitter.
I had the Striker, it was my second car after the Metro 4WD Bullet if you remember those? It took me and my dad the better part of a week to build as I had to wait for him to get home from work, and we could only spend about 15 minutes a night working on it. We finally finished the model, and despite me having over a year's experience driving the bullet, and my dad having zero experience with RC cars, he decided he was going to test drive it on the first run. We put the 7.2v battery in, he turned on the transmitter, then the car, and took off down the road at top speed - straight in to the neighbours garden while they had their sprinklers on! I was in tears as I thought the car was ruined, but thankfully the hard bucket body kept all the electronics dry! I've never let my dad forget that day! The Striker was an insanely fun car as a kid.
I love the clod it all started for me when i sore a little black & White picture of a pre production one in model cars magazine here in the uk i was one of the lucky kids back in the 80s that got one for Christmas when they first came out i still have that truck now. I think out of all the rc's i have & have had the clod is still my favorite i just love the way it bounces & rattles around there really is something about them. Grate vid by the way.
I always wanted one and about 7 years ago a buddy at work saw one of my RC’s that I brought in to use at lunch. Next day he gave me an original Clodbuster with the Chevy body and mechanical speed control, was totally beat up and non working, but I got it back up and running! Great truck!
The Clod is a Legend and brings back alot of cool memories for rc freaks. You can build it stock and have a blast or build it into a beast with all the aftermarket available.
Nice video my friend!! Brings back the good old memory. I still remember when I received this Clod Buster when I was in university from my dad, he bought it for me as he remembered I was standing by the shop windows when I was little starring at it for ages. I should have kept it when we moved houses, but back then I didn't appreciate RC as much as I do now. Perhaps I should buy it again to keep as good old memory, it will definitely be a shelf queen.
I tore mine all apart and built a completely custom rock crawler back in the early 2000's and I just got one of this exact kit a couple weeks to have one in stock form. The crawler is cool and all but like you said, those big tires bumbling around and those springy shocks is just too fun!. Much like yours mine will be mostly a shelf queen but I am sure it pick up a ding or two along the way because there is no way I'm not gonna drive it every now and again!!!
Great vid! Got my first lunchbox xmas ‘88, age 9 1/2… loved it. Got a hornet for my 10th birthday. To a 10 year old the clod was the pinnacle, only because it was bigger, 4x4x4, and was more expensive so better in my head! Too expensive my dad said. I never did get one, Nobody i knew had one. We sold the lunchbox for about £30 when i was about 15… 😭😭😭😭😭😭
Got it As soon as it launched to replace my Blackfoot! Truly was the original scale RC truck, with ESP chassis, Parma hemi engine kits, and hinged out body panels.
Similar story, I had one in the 80's along with a Blackfoot. I sold both years ago and regretted it. I just bought a Black Ed Clod and Two re-release Blackfoots, one to remain stock, the other will receive some tasteful hop ups like an MIP diff, new 540, and a hobbywing 1080 esc. Tamiya RC models are a unique experience that every enthusiast should have.
Hey Greg. Enjoy your channel. I'm from Danbury, I think I used to work with your wife at SPE actually. I've been getting back into RC a bit with my kids (good excuse). I recently just built a Blackfoot 2016 for nostalgia as I got one when I was 10 in 1988. I think my father got it at this shop on Stony Hill, do you remember that place? The performance of the Blackfoot is comically bad compared to modern machines but I love every minute of it. The servo saver pops when you look at it the wrong way, ha. Will never forget the feeling of looking at that Tamiya box art in the shop including the Clod Buster.
Hey Derrick, Yup my wife worked at SPE. That’s awesome you’re getting back into RC. It’s funny, people may take a break from RC, but they always come back. I used to shop at the Stony Hill store a lot. The Danbury Hobby Center is all we have left close by. Luckily it’s a fantastic shop with great people.
Got my first RC car 39 years ago. Today I am up to my ears in all kinds of cars, but the Clod is still the one I have had the most fun with. I've never owned a new one, but I have 2 built from used trucks. I can't get rid of them - they're just stupid fun.
Still have my Clod from 1988 with the old Challenger radio system. Added monster mash motors in 90 I think with a bearing kit. Nothing like todays RC vehicle's from Traxxas or Axial but makes ya apricate how RC has advanced over the years. My first RC was the Tamiya Monster Beetle and still have that car. As always great content and enjoy viewing your channel. Cheers!!!
Always wanted a Clod but could never afford one. Got a Tamiya Mudblaster instead as my first RC. Loved that truck! Wish I still had it, as well as all the other models I had "back then". Thanks for the retro reminder.
Built 3 clods over the years. Have them still. One is a bow tie original, one is a Gecko conversion and the last one is a clodzilla 2 conversion. Love them.
The whole time you were running it I had a huge smile on my face listening to all the sounds it makes. Took me back to being a kid again. Thanks for the awesome video!
Have had my fair share of clodbuster's & bullhead 's with the rig body . Thanks for sharing & running something that started the big scale M.T's. I'm going pickup the redcat ground pounder, the chassis the spawned the clodzilla from back in day . Awesome 👌
I was 17 back in 88', of course I took a second job at my local hobby shop to afford the Clodbuster. Very nice vid bud! Love your contents and your reviewing techniques.
I remember I drove it and said it's too quick. Let me turn it to economy mode. Actually the switch was reversed. Power mode it would pull a wheelie right away
The Clod is the Monster Truck! I still have mine from 1988. It is totally custom and sits in my case. I did buy two Black Editions and getting ready to build one. Great video and looks great!
Still have mine from the 80s also. Ko radio and speed control, oil shocks, trinity monster horsepower motors. Have another with esp chassis and jsp axles.
How ironic this is....I was probably buying the super clodbuster today when this video was downloaded! My first one and with what little I have done, it's a blast to work on! Ordered my bearing kit from Jim's bearings... should be here in a few days, which gives me a chance to paint the body....great video!
Awesome vid can't wait to see the retro build vid. It really reminds me of watching bigfoot on the telly when I was younger. Better it would make an awesome mud truck monster truck. Thanks again for the vid 👍🤙😃
The one r/c that I wanted for years and years. Finally had my first one about a year ago. I have 2 right now, one turned in to Bret Engleman's heartbeat monster truck (2nd version) and the other one is just an old school looking, tilt bed, lights, etc.
I have the clod buster, now I bought the super clod buster, started assembling it, I thought about building snap together models to set up a monster truck track
cannot wait to see the other clod build. I am in the process of putting my Clod back to how Tamiya intended it to be and then I will do another clod for rock crawling
Thank you sir for motivating me to get the black edition, kinda late now cuz it’s discontinued and it wasn’t easy either!. I bought myself a copy of the black edition still brand new wrapped in box off on eBay on an auction, just won the bid today for a decent price!, I was about to skip the black edition cuz the limited grey edition is about to release a few weeks away but now I’m skipping the grey for the black edition. Now I own 2 clod buster, the blue version which is now gonna be my outsider toy to play with and my black edition will be my new shelf king! alongside my Juggernaut 2, Txt-1, and Txt-2 agrios, the downside about it is they are all still in box unassembled 😒😒😒 lots and lots of assembling to do! I’ll start One by one Thank you again! Subscribing! 🙏🏽

I honestly wish kits were more popular. I got into cars after building aircraft and static scale models so building is half the fun for me.
Right!!!!!

Oh man my 6 year old son would love that Truck for sure!
As a kid born in 1981, this was my dream RC car. Still is.
Yeah as a teenager in the late 80s ... the rich kid in town had the Clodbuster .. I had the Lunchbox
I had the Tyco Bandit! Us poor kids.

Yes! You read my mind, I wanted to see more clod buster
That Tamiya Squeak, this is bringing me back to my youth. great build!
Same thing for me. Loved this truck growing up. Always wanted one. It was always on my Christmas list but never got one. One day.
Just picked up a closbuster gray edition , can't wait to build
The Clod is a Legend and brings back alot of cool memories for rc freaks. You can build it stock and have a blast or build it into a beast with all the aftermarket available.
Nice video my friend!! Brings back the good old memory. I still remember when I received this Clod Buster when I was in university from my dad, he bought it for me as he remembered I was standing by the shop windows when I was little starring at it for ages. I should have kept it when we moved houses, but back then I didn't appreciate RC as much as I do now. Perhaps I should buy it again to keep as good old memory, it will definitely be a shelf queen.
There’s just something about the Clod that means so much to hobbyists. Thank you for sharing your story!
@@rcdriver you are very right about that. I guess same goes to the Tamiya Lunchbox also. 😉👍🏼
We sold the lunchbox for about £30 when i was about 15… 😭😭😭😭😭😭
I got my oldest son a CLOD BUSTER in 1993. I feel it was the greatest RC we ever had. Wish I could go back!
That’s fantastic! Thank you for sharing your story!
I love my Clod. Had it since 87' still runs great!
I've built Clod's about everyway you can over the decades, but its still hard to beat a bone stock Clod for smiles and smiles! Yours looks great!
Built the origanal when i was 11, the box the wheels etc nostalgia . Thanks for sharing
I miss mine so much too! These look amazing! Gotta get one 👍🏼
CLODBUSTER; BABY!!!! the dream on the top shelf
I still haven't built mine that I got almost two years ago. Thank you for the video brother
Got my first RC car 39 years ago. Today I am up to my ears in all kinds of cars, but the Clod is still the one I have had the most fun with. I've never owned a new one, but I have 2 built from used trucks. I can't get rid of them - they're just stupid fun.
My dad bought this exact one and painted the truck a metallic blue
Still have my Clod from 1988 with the old Challenger radio system. Added monster mash motors in 90 I think with a bearing kit. Nothing like todays RC vehicle's from Traxxas or Axial but makes ya apricate how RC has advanced over the years. My first RC was the Tamiya Monster Beetle and still have that car.
As always great content and enjoy viewing your channel.
Cheers!!!
Why not
Indeed..magnificent scale work
That is sweet truck! I have a old king blackfoot still runs had for 20 years.
Always wanted a Clod but could never afford one. Got a Tamiya Mudblaster instead as my first RC. Loved that truck! Wish I still had it, as well as all the other models I had "back then". Thanks for the retro reminder.
I got three Clods atm, 2 1987 ones and a 1992 one, also building a mod clod at the moment. Have a Losi LMT for bashing, but the Clods are special.
I can’t wait to get our clod. I’ve wanted one for 33 years
I've also wanted one when I was a kid but all money I saved up for got the Blackfoot. I remember driving over these. Brings me that's for sure
Sure is a beaut man, I’d love to have one. Never drive one but it’s an rc monster truck so pretty all that needs to be said. Thanks Greg
Built 3 clods over the years. Have them still. One is a bow tie original, one is a Gecko conversion and the last one is a clodzilla 2 conversion. Love them.
I just ordered one from Hobby town USA ! But it's the Blue one! I really wanted the Black edition!
Cheers man, got this recommended now because I'm building mine atm :D
Watched the whole vid since I do like this car and build!
I also have my 80's Clodbuster. It is displayed for visual enjoyment.
My dad and i still have our original clods from 87 they are still fun all original
The whole time you were running it I had a huge smile on my face listening to all the sounds it makes. Took me back to being a kid again. Thanks for the awesome video!
Clod Buster is KING 👑
That was the truck to have back then. In 89 i Got my first rc which was the tamiya King Cab that i still have.32 yrs later lol
Ooo! The King Cab was awesome too. My track had a King Cab class. I remember there being like 4-5 heats of them with 6-8 trucks in each heat.
I love mine! Has a clodzilla chassis. Actually you make me want to pull it out and give it a once over!! Thanks greg!!
So awesome! Get that thing back out and get those gears movin!
@@rcdriver had it out this fall, but that tamiya speed control is not remotely water proof first run it got some moisture in it and went up in smoke!!
I bought a used clodbuster years ago. Was missing the one I had back when I was 17.
Just subbed love the content
This and the Juggernaut 2 are classics!
I remember the original as a teenager, the Clodbuster was a pipe dream. I had to settle for the Hornet, but I loved it too!
Wow I remember sassy chassis you're awesome Greg
The Clod is the Monster Truck! I still have mine from 1988. It is totally custom and sits in my case. I did buy two Black Editions and getting ready to build one. Great video and looks great!
Weekend here 1998 or9 that truck was KING want one again
Sorry 88 89
This truck is my next purchase!! Been wanting one for a long time!
Never had a Clod - but just got one to do a Retro racing build. Think I might pick up another one and keep it stock. Sure looks like fun! Great vid.
I was 17 years old when that came out Truck awesome
I still have my 1st build 89' Clod I've kept that one stock their's something fun & nostalgic about Tamiya legends great video Greg 😉👍
Still have mine from the 80s also. Ko radio and speed control, oil shocks, trinity monster horsepower motors. Have another with esp chassis and jsp axles.
Thats why Im having loads of fun with my RBX 10
I had a tamiya blackfoot, eventually painted over the body with red paint and had STP stickers on it. Good Times!
I have the blue Super Clod, love that truck!
wow! I cant wait to get my hands on one! (Also great video!)
The one r/c that I wanted for years and years. Finally had my first one about a year ago. I have 2 right now, one turned in to Bret Engleman's heartbeat monster truck (2nd version) and the other one is just an old school looking, tilt bed, lights, etc.
I had one years ago. The blue version and ran it all day long of 3s. Crazy fun in stock form 👍🏻
Purchased an original 87 one in like pretty new condition. Making it stand out then using it alot. Its such an awesome truck! Car crusher too
I have the clod buster, now I bought the super clod buster, started assembling it, I thought about building snap together models to set up a monster truck track
cannot wait to see the other clod build. I am in the process of putting my Clod back to how Tamiya intended it to be and then I will do another clod for rock crawling
Great video!
Keep an eye on the channel, I’ll have a new Clod video soon. 😎
