    to those a bit confused heres the music theory behind it in a nutshell:
    chords are made of 3 letters
    first letter is the name of chord(hence called the root)
    next 2 letters are the 3rd and 5th letters on the scale
    example scale:
    C D E F G A B C
    C is the root
    E is the 3rd
    G is the 5th
    power chords ignore the middle guy
    (note: not all scales have the same letters)

      This is true. However, that is a smidge misleading, as chords can be made up of more than that at times. Example: add9s (and etc.)

      @@skeetsek9186a power chord is a note layered with a 5th and sometimes with a octave

      A power chord is a chord without its 3rd note in it. The 3rd is a note that gives a chord a 'major' or a 'minor' feeling to it. You can find the 3rd note of a chord by counting up the notes of the scale your chord is based on.
      For example, in the C major scale [C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C] the [E] is the 3rd note of this particular scale. [F] is the 4th, [G] is the 5th, etc..
      In a C major triad chord [C-E-G], it includes the 1st note [C], the 3rd note [E], and the 5th note [G] of the C major scale. You can take out the 3rd note [E] to get a power chord which only includes the 1st and the 5th notes which in this case are [C] and [G].
      So basically, a power chord is a chord that only includes the 1st and the 5th notes of a scale.

    Just a question because I’m super curious, do you strum all the strings with the pick to play the chord or just the ones your fingers are on? Rock on dude 🤘🤘

    • @AmbroseB1900
      @AmbroseB1900 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Usually just the 2 or 3 strings. If you play all the strings with distortion on, it will sound messy!

    • @Crash.7434
      @Crash.7434 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You only strum the ones that your finger is hold besides in some cases like he showed at the beginning. I barley know anything about first position cords and only thing I don’t know about barre/power cords is if it’s minor or major which to this video told me it neither

      in a C major chord, the root note is the C note. Root of B major is B. An octave is just the same note, but on a higher or lower pitch.
      Music theory makes sense when u learn in it on piano even tho u dont have one

    • @ok-ge1f
      @ok-ge1f 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      More clear explanation:
      The C Maj chord is made up of 3 notes:
      1. The Root - C note
      2. The Maj Third - E note
      3. Perfect Fifth - G note
      If you remove the Third or the E note, u get a power chord, playing only the C note and G note. That easy

    • @ok-ge1f
      @ok-ge1f 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      An octave is just the same note, but at a higher or lower pitch. You can use it in a sentence like:
      "Play the C note, an octave higher"
      or
      "Play both the C note and it's high octave"
      this is just the basics for me, you can check out music theory on the piano cuz u can understand theory on piano more clearly

    Isnt that just an interval?

    • @andycrowley
      @andycrowley  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If you play the 1st and 5th one after the other, it's an interval yes. If you play them together, it's a power chord

    If you only play the root and the fifth it wouldn't technically be a chord, since a chord is made of three notes or more ☝🤓

      2. The Maj Third - E note
      3. Perfect Fifth - G note
