    Fun (and sad) fact: at 23:07 the notes on synth that can be heard just before the song ends are a call back to an early Pink Floyd single 'See Emily Play' (released in 1967) which was the Floyd's first big hit. The particular part it quotes is "Emily tries but misunderstands". This was a small addition from Richard Wright (the keyboardist) paying his tribute to Ex band mate Syd Barrett, whom the song 'shine on you crazy diamond' is dedicated to or more or less the album as a whole.

  • @phillipharrison7283

    On Animals do Pigs on the wing 1 and Dogs, then Pigs (3 different kinds), then Sheep and Pigs on the Wing 2. Three bites instead of two.
    After that thought you may enjoy a change of scene for a break. May I suggest Jethro Tull's 'Aqualung' album. 11 tracks but two short tracks which can be paired up. Or, The Doors self titled debut album, also 11 tracks.

  • @justinatest9456
    @justinatest9456 2 ปีที่แล้ว +51

    This album hits hard no matter what, it's beautiful. However it takes on another meaning when you're more familiar with the story of Syd Barrett. The whole album is dripping in remorse and sadness, anger and resentment, and I believe a deep regret for how things turned out for their long-loved brother whom they sort of abandoned. Truly heartbreaking when you think about it.
    Remember when you were young
    You shone like the sun
    Now there's a look in your eye
    Like black holes in the sky

    • @happyphotoshooter
      @happyphotoshooter 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      They truly didn't abandon Syd - He lost his mind and was institutionalized. It is a tribute to him and his creative talent when he was still on top of things. He was the creative drive of the band, and he was truly missed by his bandmates. "The Wall" is a similar album for them as a good bye for Rodger Waters. He loved the interaction with the audience, and as they became more popular, he felt security was "building a wall" between them and the audience. That was his last album with Pink Floyd, and if you watch the live version of "The Wall", you can see the real meaning of the song. I am not saying this is truly factual, but it is how I understand things went.

      @@happyphotoshooter Just to help you out. Roger left after the album 'The Final Cut', when it became obvious that his vision of PF's future diverged so much from that of both David Gilmour and Nick Mason. The band essentially split very acrimoniously, with a legal battle for retention of the PF name ending in a Gilmour and Mason victory. As a consequence, Rick Wright (who had earlier been forced out by Waters) rejoined and played on the subsequent albums 'A Momentary Lapse of Reason' and 'The Division Bell' before succumbing to cancer in 2008.

    Nick and David staring at US between you two hearing this for the first time … WOW ! Again … THANK YOU for doing WHOLE SIDES of the original albums . I seriously think a conservative estimate of how many times I’ve listened to this album … then 8-track… then Cassette… then CD … then vinyl again … and now streaming etc. … got to be 10,000 + times . Dark Side could not be far behind ! Hope you do their first 2 albums the same way ! Their 4th LP “ Ummagumma” (1969) was a double album … but man all 4 sides of that would be an epic reaction . Glad “Animals” is coming … “Meddle” (1971) is definitely deserving as well . WAIT until you see “LIVE at Pompeii” (1972) 🎥🎸Thank you for these !!!

    1975 and everyone at the time was waiting to see what the Floyd would deliver after DSOTM from 1973. And they didn't disappoint! A tribute to Syd Barrett (Shine on You Crazy Diamond Pts 1-9 and Wish You were Here) and the struggle of artists with record companies (Welcome to the Machine and Have a Cigar) is perfectly created. To think this album is nearly 50 years old and the guys were in their late 20's recording such experiential music.....it is sublime. The packaging of the album in black plastic with graphics (sticker on the front of robotic hands) and a 'Wish You Were Here' postcard insert together with weird and strange photography on the gatefold LP (Thanks to the late Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey “Po” Powell, who with the band, wanted to emphasise it is “the land of make-believe; where nothing is real and all is absent.”) certainly made this the album to have. It is one of the many masterpieces from the Floyd and I can listen to it again....and again....and again. So long Syd and Rick.

    A rule of thumb for all new Pink Floyd album listeners -- Subsequent listens are mandatory.
    The first listen or 7 are preparatory actions that prime your brain for the deeper revelations that are only revealed upon multiple aural ingestions.
    Initial intakes are necessary to implant the basic elements of the musical machinery of the Pink Floyd masterpiece into your subconscious, thus allowing further intakes to mingle with the earlier implants and eventually manifest the full and complete creation, making it possible to experience consciously all of the ingredients that make up the melodic recipe, but can only be experienced as a whole with these repeated layers being strategically placed into your soul.

    I am a new subscriber, and I really appreciate your reactions which in a certain way symbolize how is great for the new generations to discover and appreciate the fantastic musical quality of the 60’s and 70’s musicians and bands. Pink Floyd is, as far to me, the best band ever on rock history. Their studio albums are unique in this history and the only ones that, one after another one, can not only show the progressive quality of the band but also to display the excellency of their musicians, song after song in each album.
    Man, it's good to enjoy to your reactions, and is time now for you to react to another three Masterpieces of these genial four: “Animals” (1972), “Meddle” (1971), and “Atom Earth Mother” (1970).
    And is also a must see how you will react to Pink Floyd's "Comfortably numb" alive, from the "Pulse" concert (1979). This one is absolutely breath taking, and beats the studio version. It also gives you an idea about the dimension of Pink Floyd alive shows. As we, fans of Pink Floyd, use to say: "You don't listen to Pink Floyd music. You experience it"!
    Besides these ones you also need to deeply dive into the music of another fantastic bands of the same period, and I strongly recommend you to react to these entire albums: Deep Purple “Made in Japan” (1972 - this is most probably the best alive album ever recorded), Fleetwood Mac "Rumours" (1977), Supertramp "Crime of the Century" (1974), and Jane "Genuine" (2002).

    Hi. loving your reactions, genuine and v cool. I bought all their albums when they first came out and still adore them. A track you really need to hear is Comfortably Numb from the incredible The Wall album. fantastic guitar so solo, BUT to really be blown away then you have to see the live version from the Pulse concert in 1994, on youtube. It will knock you senseless! Btw there's a remaster of it done in 2019, use that ! The lighting and effects were groundbreaking, the band set no limit to the budget for the show. Both these tracks also are real view and sub magnets too! Good luck, will enjoy to follow your progress.

    Great reaction to what must be my favourite Floyd album. I love a few of them, but this one is just too beautiful.
    My other possible favourite is the follow-up album Animals. I would strongly recommend either familiarizing yourself with the themes and lyrics ahead of time, or at the very least following along with the lyrics as you listen.
    The good news is you don't necessarily have to listen to it in one sitting. While the songs sometimes bleed into each other it's not as jarring to start and stop them in between. The bad news is there's basically only three songs on the album, so there's no breaks to be taken. I would recommend doing the album like this if you choose not to react to it in one sitting:
    1. Pigs On The Wing (Part 1) 1:24
    Dogs 17:04
    2. Pigs (Three Different Ones) 11:28
    3. Sheep 10:20
    Pigs On The Wing (Part 2) 1:24
    As you can see the album opens and closes with two little 1:24 songs that are more like bookends than actual songs. Just a thought that seemed easier to explain when I started this comment.

    I think this album underlines why David Gilmour is considered one of the greatest guitarist ever. Have a Cigar's vocals were recorded by Roy Harper, after a long day and many takes neither David Gilmour nor Roger Waters liked the vocals they had tried and Roger was getting a sore throat, Roy was recording and album at the same time and they asked him tomout down some vocals initially as a comparison, but both David and Roger agreed they should use Roy's vocals.

    Meddle, Atom Heat Mother, Animals and The Wall next - but also time to dip into another group - The Moody Blues - an altogether differnt sound and to begin with I suggest "One More Time To Live". or "Melancholy Man"

      One of the best songs to listen to after smoking a little weed is “Ice” by Camel. That’s another great old English group that for some reason just never became big outside of Europe. I always put on a Camel cd whenever I have people over my house, and almost everyone loves it.

    My favorite part to this album, in Shine On You Crazy Diamond (6-9), the lyrics say:
    "Nobody knows where you are, how near or how far"
    And during the recording sessions for the album, Syd Barrett (for whom Shine On You Crazy Diamond, and indeed, much of Pink Floyd's catalogue, was dedicated) showed up in the studio. The band hadn't seen him in years, and he looked completely different from the man they'd known. Quite fitting, in my mind, that he appeared during the band's tribute to him, and proof for me that, sometimes, life has its funny ways of making things work the way they need to.
    Whatever you choose to do with your channel, SIlas, people will be here to watch and listen alongside you. Have a great day, friend. :)

    Just bought a brand new Quad receiver when they came out and this album. When listen to "have a cigar 'ending it sounded like my front channels had stop. Then leading in to "wish yo where here" they front channel came back. Brilliant use of 4 track a first. they went on to record in 8, 16, 32, track the master of sound. try to find videos on Gilmours recording studio in his house boat. you can find some of the things he has used to get these sounds.

    Four PF albums at this level, plus an almost... being (in chronological order) Meddle, Dark Side, Wish You Were Here, Animals. Plus The Wall.
    And a 3rd party band also had a Syd Barrett tribute. It's an original work sort of in PF style, almost a 3rd side to Meddle.... Bett'r Days from Rain Falls in Grey, by Radio Massacre International. Worth checking out.
    Great reaction.. Have fun guys! :)

Right now, I’m sitting in the front row at the Amway Center in Orlando waiting for Roger Waters to take the stage. I’ll be silent and trippy for the next two hours like your buddy is when he listens to Floyd.

    The Song "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" is a direct shout out to Pink Floyd's founding member Syd Barrett. He was the leader of the group until he had a nervous breakdown and they had to kick him out of the group. They try to have a reference to him in all his albums. "Nobody's Home" from The Wall and "Brain Damage" from Dark Side of the Moon for examples.
    "Have a Cigar" is the only song of theirs where the singer is not someone from the group.
    Recommended albums for you to listen to would be Animals and The Wall.

    I listened to this about 50 years ago. Pink Floyd music is very creative. Best enjoyed in the dark, or with eyes closed. It’s easy to imagine images that may apply to the lyrics and music. The lyrics have deep meanings. The music evokes images and emotions very well. Songs which transition to the next show the cohesiveness of an album, not just a bunch of unconnected songs.

I know it's his way of vibing to the music, we all did that too, but I swear he nods off, every time! Don't stop that! You, Nodding Roman, will be known for that! Who knows, maybe street recognition and fame are in your future for just being you! I love it!!! (Please correct me if I got his name wrong) Love you, Silas! 🤘

    Hat's off (that's a bit of an unintended pun) to my man for picking up on the radio transition after Have A Cigar, before it's made clear by the opening of Wish You Were Here.
    In case it wasn't clear, WYWH opens with an acoustic guitar being played on a bed side radio (you can hear the old time radio noises), and the second guitar that plays the melody is being played by someone sitting in the room listening and playing along to the radio. It's a very beautiful idea, and well executed.

    • @tommythompson9565

      I have never heard of this before. I bought this album upon it's initial release. Listened to it religiously. Is your understanding of this definite fact ? Can it be verified? Not doubting your story, but I am surprised that I haven't heard this before.
      Is the radio listener Syd Barrett, perhaps staying in contact with the band one way or another?

    • @justinatest9456
      @justinatest9456 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tommythompson9565 I should've maybe said it was produced to sound as though the guitar was coming from a radio, and the second guitar was produced to sound like it was someone playing along with the radio.
      I'm sure it was all studio trickery, and all of the guitar was played by David Gilmour in studio.

    • @tommythompson9565
      @tommythompson9565 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@justinatest9456 Yes. That was the idea I got from your earlier post. I was just wondering how that could be taken by the one listening to the album.
      But thanks for getting back.

    • @justinatest9456
      @justinatest9456 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tommythompson9565 I almost thought you were being sarcastic in your initial question. I get some weird heat on youtube on account of my Ukraine colours in my pfp, so I was a little on edge and assumed the worst. My fault and my apologies.
      Yeah, I suppose it's fair to say I'm making a lot of assumptions about the radio, but give it another listen with that in mind. You hear a radio tuned to a new channel, the whine of interference and static, etc. And then you hear the lead guitar, much more clear and present.
      Actually, I had to check wikipedia, wondering if I imagined this interpretation:
      "In the original album version, the song segues from "Have a Cigar" as if a radio had been tuned away from one station, through several others (including a radio play and one playing the opening of the finale movement of Tchaikovsky's Fourth Symphony), and finally to a new station where "Wish You Were Here" is beginning.[7]
      The radio was recorded from Gilmour's car radio. He performed the intro on a twelve-string guitar, processed to sound like it was playing through an AM radio, and then overdubbed a fuller-sounding acoustic guitar solo. This passage was mixed to sound as though a guitarist were listening to the radio and playing along. As the acoustic part becomes more complex, the "radio broadcast" fades away and Gilmour's voice enters, while the rest of the band joins in."
      Sorry for the long comment, but I had to know. Now you do too. Peace brother.

    If you can't keep up with full albums daily, every other day is fine, or whenever you can, because as you know, breaking up concept albums - or albums with transitioning tracks - isn't how they were intended to be listened too. And like someone else has said, if you find out where albums stopped between side A and side B of the vinyl/cassette versions, that's a good place to stop between videos... Looking forward to more reactions! I have many suggestions, but discovering Pink Floyd should keep you going for a while :)
