Great job, well explained, clear process, easy, easy, easy ..... Only 3 minutes, what a difference compared to all those 15 minutes "tutorials" that do everything except show the right way to create a Bootable USB.
Man you are a life saver!. I am an independent computer technician and I do not have the resources to buy a modern mac system, so I have to use virtual machines to prepare the usb drive. This was a great help!
Spent hours going thru forums and 10 min long videos pulling my hair out 🤬 and when I was just about to give up hope your video was so simple and it massively helped and saved my iMac I cannot thank you enough 😊
Thank you so much. I spent all day trying to do this, if only I had seen your video before I wasted half my day trying to create a bootable drive. If only.......
Thank you for a clear concise and visual explanation of a tricky task. I have not yet run the usb stick but it looks good, especially because i could not re download my osx HSierra from apple on my smaller mbpro!
Great video. But when I hit enter after my password I got"/Applications/Install macOS High Sierra.app does not appear to be a valid installer application." Any ideas?
Thanks, the last time I tried this it was text only and nerve-racking. I had no idea things could be dragged into terminal and that made it so much easier.
Excellent video after, thanks a lot. After hours of watching videos and thousands of attempts, yours solved my problem. Very useful. As a note, you only can do this on a computer that´s compatible with the OSX that you´re working on.
Outstanding tutorial, I love the sequel way You did it. Some of the tutorial on yt are just ridiculously long and so much unneceseary jabber that all failed me. You did it awesome, thank You so much, from Canada!
Thank you for the video. I have a problem because my flash drive is locked > is it something I need to do to make a flash drive unlocked for other Mac book?
I get this following error: Arguments --volume, A path to a volume that can be unmounted and erased to create the install media. --applicationpath, A path to copy of the OS installer application to create the bootable media from. --nointeraction, Erase the disk pointed to by volume without prompting for confirmation. Example: createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled
managed to do it all but after starting computer with option restart choosing the High Sierra drive and picking the wifi and entering the password, phew all I get is a no entry sign. I am running this on a brand new Imac 27" with Catalina installed does this make a difference and what do I do to make it work????
Worked perfect. Thank you so much. I was trying to reload Sierra and was unable because my Mac came with Snow Leopard, it wanted the boot disk and I did not have it. I actually just used this procedure and it worked to install High Sierra instead. Just a quick note to anyone doing this though, when you type the password you will not see anything happening but just know it is still registering. Also, after it formats the usb disk and starts to install to it there is no progress meter, just know it is working and eventually will say Done.
Where did you find. a high Sierra och Sierra file to make it go into applications ? I have a MacBook Pro 2018 and I won't get it in applications... any solution ?
Hi, Im trying to download an installer for MACOS High Sierra for my 2009 imac that has crashed and will no boot up in to recovery. However, when I follow the link on App Store it says my 2020 imac isn't compatable and will not let me download. Any ideas?
Doesn't work for me, i'm trying to create a bootable usb on a M1 mac. I cannot get the installer to look like you show here probably because it was designed for an intel mac. Is it even possible to create a mac OS bootable drive on my Apple silicon laptop for an older intel device i need to re-install macOS on?
sadly, I am getting "permissions denied" + "no valid sudoers sources found, quitting" + "unable to initialize policy plugin" errors... Any suggestions?
And this is why I hate using Mac & Iphones these days. They make it so bloody hard to do something so simple as this video. Thanks. I was trying to create a usb bootable drive since many days ago and only found this after trying all manners of ways.
I am using Catalina on iMac...I can't get the terminal to process the command. Keeps saying "terminating with uncaught exception of type" NSexception...what am I dong wrong?
Great video! Any idea what versions of OS X this will work with? I occasionally get older computers around this era to work on and would be great to be able to make a series of install USB drives for different versions of the OS. Thank you for this one, it's just what I needed to troubleshoot one of my older iMacs
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!! I've watch quite a few videos on this topic and It seems like the way you did it was different from the others and IT WORKED!!!!! Thank You again and again!!!!
Can someone tell me what I have done wrong.. made the bootable usb fine following these steps but once I plug it in and let it load all it shows is the apple logo and status bar completed but that’s it. I left it over night to see if it is just taking a while but nothing. I erased by hard drives and cannot even boot recovery mode. Tried most things but not having luck installing new os
instead of downloading from app store, can I download mac os high sierra from google ( iso or dmg file) to use it to create bootable usb flash drive or not? I really need this answer please.
Kallen, when I drag the High Sierra Icon into the terminal, terminal reads it's not valid. Ugh!? Followed every step so not sure what's wrong. FYI, I am on Sierra, and haven't upgraded to High Sierra yet. I'm on a Mid 2015 MB Pro and putting a new Samsung 960 Pro SSD. Thoughts?
i have found and .iso file for the high sierra os but as the "Install macOS High Sierra" is in the iso contents and not in the application folder when i drag it from the iso file contents into terminal then hit enter/password/enter i get the terminal response telling me that the .iso does not appear to be a valid OS installer application :( if possible do you have a work around for this ? i have created a mohave installer but i also want the option for high sierra to install first , possibly even just sierra as im bringing an old macbook back to life that has a lot of old apps on it i would like to retain etc
I have a 2011 imac which I reformatted. When trying to reinstall the OS I got the "server could not be contacted" error message . I've tried everything to fix that issue with no luck. So now I'm trying to create a USB boot drive from my new Mac Studio. Apparently I can't do that either because the app store says High Sierra is incompatible. Not sure what my next move should be. I'm opened to suggestions if anybody has one......
Does anyone know if booting up from the newly-created Bootable macOS High Sierra USB thumb drive will totally erase everything on the Mac's destination (internal) drive? To clarify, I'm trying to update a friend's Early-2015 MBP 13 Retina model. It came with OS X Yosemite 10.10 installed and the OS hasn't been upgraded since it was purchased from The Apple Store. The idea is to upgrade to macOS High Sierra, but I don't want to lose certain data - i.e., like the Safari reading list - that's already on the MBP 13 that I'm working on. Am I going about this the wrong way? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
(raises his hand, hopes for kindness) I have a late-2012 iMac whose hard drive has died. I have a 500Gb external SSD drive. I want to use it as a bootable drive, effectively replacing the dead one. I've tried to start the process, but ended up with an 'Install macOS High Sierra' file on the drive, so I've missed the target entirely. So in following your guidance here, am I going to get what I'm trying to create, which is an external drive that replaces my old internal one?
I am having a late 2009 iMac had I had macos+windows vista on it then by mistakenly I formated the entire drive and after that I got the famous ( Folder mark with a question mark ) and after some days there was nothing just a white screen then I did the following things 1. made a live ubuntu 20.04 USB stick held the option key and installed ubuntu on complete drive 2. then I made 64-bit windows XP bootable DVD ( because now my 500gb hard drive was detected by holding the option key 3. then installed 64-bit windows XP and after that windows 10 :) then finally made a bootable high sierra USB stick and installed macOS :) As u said your HDD died u can try what I did otherwise replace it :) Ps: I was not having installation disks and access to another mac that's why I had to go through this! windows XP because i was not having a big size DVD , and windows 10 64 bit usb stick was not booting up ! i hope it helps
@@ayushmokal Actually, my story has taken a strange turn. I managed to get the data recovered. Turns out there's nothing wrong with the HD; apparently, it was the OS that was scuppered. Regardless, I had an SSD installed as a replacement. Go figure.
This initially did not work for me because my terminal read "tty000" instead of "console", which somehow didn't allow the process to continue after I typed in my password-- I was stuck without the option of pressing "Y" to erase the drive. All I did to fix that was shutdown my MacBook and restart it, so the terminal then read "console", and the process worked like a charm from that point on. Hope this helps anyone who is having this same issue.
I needed to install High Sierra on an old Macbook air, this gem of a video worked perfectly.
Finally, someone who really explains for real , step by step. Thank you and big up ! Great Video
Here in 2024 because I needed to create this bootable disk and thank you so much, this is the only tutorial that worked
Legit looked at doing this last year had to go through so much yapping to get my answer. This one works first time every time 10/10 video

6 years old video and it is still helping people. Thank you brother. This helped me restore an old Mac I have.

Thanks and welcome, Clint!
Thank you so much. I spent all day trying to do this, if only I had seen your video before I wasted half my day trying to create a bootable drive. If only.......
Same here, wasted the whole day trying to make bootable os on usb.

after hours of research , this actually worked thanks
Great video. But when I hit enter after my password I got"/Applications/Install macOS High Sierra.app does not appear to be a valid installer application." Any ideas?
I need answers too
This is by far the most helpful video on this topic. Fast and easy to understand. Cheers.
Wow, this was explained clearly and concisely. Not to mention, the video didn't have an an obnoxious introduction or fluff.

Hi This appears "/Applications/Install macOS High Sierra.app does not appear to be a valid OS installer application." What should I do?
Bryan Ferrer same
Is there any way I can print these instructions as I find it difficult to follow a video. thanks.
I get this following error:
Arguments
--volume, A path to a volume that can be unmounted and erased to create the install media.

--nointeraction, Erase the disk pointed to by volume without prompting for confirmation.

My mouth can't say more than GREAT WORK! I really appreciate your efforts. And... KEEP UP!
Worked flawlessly!! Thank you so much for the video!! You do have to format the flash drive to Mac OS Extended first.
Glad to hear!
I love you bro❤️ only yours is the one video that actually worked
Created the disk fine. When trying to install I get a No symbol with the address to a apple startup website

I am having a late 2009 iMac had I had macos+windows vista on it then by mistakenly I formated the entire drive and after that I got the famous ( Folder mark with a question mark ) and after some days there was nothing just a white screen
then I did the following things
1. made a live ubuntu 20.04 USB stick held the option key and installed ubuntu on complete drive
2. then I made 64-bit windows XP bootable DVD ( because now my 500gb hard drive was detected by holding the option key
3. then installed 64-bit windows XP and after that windows 10 :)
then finally made a bootable high sierra USB stick and installed macOS :)
As u said your HDD died u can try what I did otherwise replace it :)
Ps: I was not having installation disks and access to another mac that's why I had to go through this!
windows XP because i was not having a big size DVD , and windows 10 64 bit usb stick was not booting up !
i hope it helps
