So +5 seconds per day, the rotor is a bit noisy, no AR coating, the bezel has a bit of play and doesn't line up? Maybe the Chinese NH35 homages are actually more accurate than we expected.

Alias Anybody when you buy a Rolex you’re also buying the history, quality, name, and prestige. If you are into that Chinese homage junk, which has zero substance, good for you. Wear them well!
I, on the other hand, wouldn’t even take for free a junk homage watch regardless of how close the the original has been cloned.

So I just picked up this watch from my AD in NY. Christmas came early. I'm absolutely delighted, relieved, to report that none, none, of these issues are readily apparent on my Rootie. If it's your first GMT, don't expect a GMT bezel to be as crisp as a diver. It's more indents than clicks. It does float up slightly as you turn to the indents but mine doesn't play up and down or forward and back at rest and lines up pretty much perfect. The rotor is audible but not at all noisy. No real play in the end link at the watch face. Thank goodness. I would have been very annoyed. Thanks for the heads up. I inspected the hell out of it before leaving the shop. Cheers guys.

I've had lots of quality issues with my Rolex's. Funnily enough the only one that was perfect was my Rootbeer. My Pepsi has misaligned hands, Explorer has uneven dark patchy lume on the hands, Submariner with misaligned bezel and rehaut and timing issues etc. These were all brand new watches.

You expectations were two high. Almost everything you listed other than "timing issues" are not considered problems. Expectations way too high. Well, the reason is simple enough. Rolex spent massive amounts on establishing themselves as the superior luxury brand during the 70's and 80's. Us who grew up in those decades were brought up to believe that a Rolex could keep perfect time while being contained inside a rally car tire through the Paris-Dakar. The amount of people from those generations who are now pretentious deuce bags is enough for a solid customer base and they could never possibly think of anything else to buy than the by far most recognizable "luxury" item!

I understand the rolex deal. I have a few i bought early in my watch journey, and they have appreciated greatly, but they are just a mass produced brand. Its not like rolex makes 2000 pieces a year, the make over half a million. Its a glorified seiko in some respects and I'd argue you get more for ypur you money from seiko in both quality and construction, especially at the marine master level, on into grand Seiko. If Rolex doesn't watch out Tudor will supplant them in the hierarchy. You are getting the same watch for 1/2 price or less.

I have a 1016 explorer I bought in the late 80s it was £600, a tenth of the price of my new car now the current version is about a third of the price of a similar car. I saw someone asking 40,000 USD for (a pretty tatty) one this morning. Of course we dont know what people get for these watches. I was thrilled at my purchase (it was absolutely perfectly built) and will never part with it but I wouldn't by a Rolex now. Phil B Mine was pretty perfect. I think it’s luck of the draw. Where did you scratch it? Is it on the brushed bracelet? If so just use a scotch brite pad and it’ll get rid of it as long as its not stupidly deep. If its polished, use a Dremel and polishing wheel. My parnis was covered in scratches from work and it looks brand new again. As long as you dont damage the sapphire you can fix everything else no problem.

Yeah. The QC is something that is jot just Seiko. My DJ thunderbird is off when it's at full hour, it drives me crazy but will have to deal with it until it's due for service and maybe will fix it then

5:06 and 10:39 The GMT hand is quite hard to distinguish against the dial. I couldn't see it at first.

Rolex stainless sports models are all gorgeous. You just have to hold the watch to appreciate the substance. I do not wish to own a Rolex as it would freak me out to wear it as a daily... not in terms of scratching it, but rather losing it or being mugged for it. I own a Tudor and that is pricy enough for me, but it does not stop me from admiring Rolex, Omega, et cetera.

My most expensive watch is a $60 Loreo Rolex homage, so I have no experience with these high end watches, but I do think that the Omega Seamaster might be quieter when you shake it because it is not an automatic movement (it is hand wound), so there is no rotor winding to listen to when you shake the watch.

"Worth" is very subjective, I don't ever dispute they're a great watch but for 20k GBP I could get the whole Omega '57 Trilogy set in the box. I'm not a Rolex fanboi but I get why people want Rolex, just categorically isn't for me, I'd rather have an AP, Patek or even just a JLC. EDIT: just a Grand Seiko to be honest.
I'm certain 95% of the watches Jody has reviewed over the years could be purchased for the cost of this watch.

Same alignment issues and jingling on my Sub Date. I hate to say I only see the slightest misplaced lume on my ancient Boctok Komandirskie. I wouldn’t say they’re worth the same, but they both keep time, I like them both, I’ll wear them both, and I feel happy to have them both.

If the Rolex branding was removed and you reviewed the watch objectively how much would you say it was worth?
Or more to the point, how much would you pay?

I rushed upstairs to check the chapter ring on my 2018 Explorer 1. It aligns perfectly. Although my niggle on that is the logo is upside down when the crown is screwd in. I still wouldn't part with it though.

Why do GMT watches come with 24 click bezels? If it works for Adelaide on GMT+9.5, why not the quarter hour zones? How hard would it be to have 48 click bezel instead?
