    Hi I'm a Civil Engineering Student and in my 3rd year. I have always wanted to be a Environmental Engineer but our school don't have that program that's why I choose civil. Thank you for reminding me that I'm still on track, you gave me a motivation to keep on going. 🥰

      Hi Shin,
      You’re almost done! Don’t give up yet!
      And Civil engineers are pretty flexible, so they should be able to jump into this field

    Can you have an Electrical Engineering degree and transition to Environmental Engineering? I have an Electrical Engineering degree but want to work for the Department of Environmental Conservation.

    • @RandyLy
      @RandyLy  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That will depend on the employer. I don't hire anyone, and I don't know what their requirements are, but I would think that if your position is related to anything electrical related, it will be more aligned with what they want.

  • @root7.3

    What do you think of degrees mixing social sciences, engineering and others ? A master degree in "sustainability science"? Or "environmental and resource management"? Will they get me a job in environmental engineering? And, also, how to value my experience in computer science in an engineering job interview?
    Thank you :)

    • @RandyLy
      @RandyLy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I encourage learning new fields outside of your university degree, but I don't think it is necessary to have to graduate and pay more for it. For example, you may be interested in engineering and love cooking, but you don't need to go to culinary school to prove that you cook.
      I have mixed feelings about minoring and mixing other degrees. It does prove to the employer that you are versatile and proficient in other fields, but they might also wonder which field you enjoy more and want to pursue. It can go both ways.
      If the position doesn't require you to actively use your computer science experience, it may not be necessary to bring up, since the employer only cares about the responsibilities specific to that position.

    Hi Randy! I have found your videos really helpful, as I myself (like many others in the comment section) want to major in environmental engineering. If I recall correctly, I believe your job title is “Health and Safety”? I’m not sure if that has changed now, but I’m interested in pursuing a career in industrial hygiene. If you do have experience in this career field (industrial hygiene/ health and safety/ occupational health and safety, etc.) I would love to connect with you, so I can get some more insight of what the field/career is like.

      Hi Alex,
      My job title is "Environmental Engineer" but my job functions as an Environmental health and safety specialist/compliance person. I personally just don't think my title fits what I envision env engineers do, although some env engineers do exactly what I do. It's just my own a nitpicky thing.
      I do not have any experience as an industrial hygienist, but you are welcome to connect with me on Linkedin if you haven't already

    Hey man, your videos seem really helpful! I've watched a couple and I'm glad I found them.
    I am currently in high school, and I wanted to know what I could be studying right now to make the environmental engineering course less of a pain in college. Calculus? AP physics? Computer science courses? Stats? Chem? Bio? Are there any particular math/science subjects that I HAVE to have taken/be comfortable with before choosing environmental engineering?

    • @RandyLy
      @RandyLy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Ronaldo,
      Thanks for watching. I'm glad you're thinking about your future at this age.
      Taking any AP classes will help no matter what subject. AP Calculus AB and BC are a must. It will save you like one entire year's worth of math. AP Physics helps, but my university still made me take the general physics course even if you passed AP physics for some reason.
      In the end, the more AP classes that you can successfully pass during high school will help you in the long run and save a lot of time and tuition costs. I would recommend AP Calculus AB+BC, Language, Physics, Chemistry, and Stats.

    Hi Randy, I'm in my first year of studies towards a bachelor's in Environmental Engineering, and I'm kinda struggling with AutoCAD courses. Since you said that, you were struggled with AutoCAD during your first time. Do you have any tips about AutoCAD? Especially for a newbie engineer like me. Also, thanks for the vids man, you're one of the people that I could rely on environmental engineer information.

    • @RandyLy
      @RandyLy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Avila,
      I actually still never took an Autocad class 😅
      My work doesnt require me to have this skill, since it is mostly for Civil Engineers, so I never saw a reason to complete it if I won’t ever use it. I did try to learn it on the side but it is honestly very boring that I couldn’t keep up. But if you can endure, I would just follow along videos on TH-cam and learn from them. Once you know the basics, its really just playing around and finding an interesting and easy project to hone your skills.

    Hi again, I'm planning on taking environmental engineering, however, due to some university not having this course I plan to take civil engineering and take master for environmental later. The problem is I don't know what course should I take for my second option in case I failed my forst option.
    My plan A:
    1st option= Environmental Engineering
    2nd option= ?
    My plan B (if I applied to the university that doesn't have Enviro. Eng. course)
    1st option= Civil Engineering
    2nd option= ?
    The option for my 2nd choice are; Bs Chemistry, Bs Agricultural and Biosystem Engineering, and Chemical Engineerng
    I hope you can somewhat help me, thank you!

      My second problem is I'm planning on applying for a scholarship but to my dismay, Environmental Engineering is not listed on their Priority List Courses:(

    • @RandyLy
      @RandyLy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'll answer this question as if I were in your situation.
      2nd: Chemical Engineering for both plan A and B
      Chemical Engineering is pretty flexible in the job market. They are just as respectable in both engineering and pure science and aren't limited to just one field. You don't need a Masters in Chem Eng to get started working and can jump around in the Biology, Chemistry, Engineering sector as a Chemical Engineer.

      You don't have to worry too much about graduating with the exact major. I know Env Eng is still relatively new, so most universities may not have it offered yet. So long as you major in something closely related to Env Eng and take some courses that show you have some knowledge about it.
      If the scholarship requires a certain major, I'd cater to the scholarship's choice. Employers are flexible with majors.

    • @homeyazy275

    Thank you for your videos!!! So how many general classes do you need to exactly take? There’s no exact curriculum?

    • @RandyLy
      @RandyLy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Each university will have its own prerequisite classes. Since I graduated with a Bachelors in Chemistry, I took more science/chemistry classes than necessary. Its usually once you reach third year of college will you start to take specific, upper division classes for your major.

    do you know what fields would be best to work in if I wanted to make that most impact on climate change?

    • @RandyLy
      @RandyLy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm an environmental engineer, so I am biased. Environmental engineering is the way to go 😄
      But also, you don't need to work at a certain job to make a difference against climate change. It all starts with you as an individual and your lifestyle.

    May I ask what your hours are? Do you work 9-5? Do you ever wish you had more time off to do other things like travel?

    • @RandyLy
      @RandyLy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I work from 7AM to 4PM with a 30 minute lunch break included somewhere in there. It's salary based so it's not super strict on the hours. If you can get the work done faster, you can leave earlier.
      The work/life balance at my job is good. Again, if you can get the work done faster, you are free to do as you please so long as it is still discreetly professional. After work hours, it's like any other job where you live your own personal life. Someone has to like push me to travel and have fun because I'm not super exciting

      I don't know anything about other universities in other countries. You will have to do the research on that yourself depending on the country you live in.
      I went to UC Riverside for Bachelors and UC Irvine for Masters. They are in the United States
