  • Enjoy the 86/22 - 1986 Honda 250cc
    A few months ago I was in NY doing a school and was talking to my friends about racing and saying I didn’t really enjoy the part of having to win, be fast and fit. I wish I could find a way to have fun. So after a few beers they say, “Well, why don’t you race the 86?” After a few more beers it sounded like a amazing idea. haha!
    So my friends worked so hard to get the bike together and trick as hell!
    The first time I rode this bike was in practice yesterday - but some important parts where still in the air (suspension - pipe - silencer) so we had to steal parts off the parts bike. So going into practice I had no back brake. I knew that because we got the bike together 10min before practice. The suspension has never been touched since production, carb tubs where pinched, wrong gearing, wrong clutch springs.
    So that was the hardest time I have ever had on a bike! Haha! It wore my ass out ! But did all the jumps and rode not to bad, considering.
    So today we made all the changes - suspension - pipe - silencer and more. It took a little to figure out the way to flow and how the bike works and handles, but once I did a few laps I started to feel pretty good on it. I have to ride it more like a 500cc - more roll - less brake - still can be aggressive with the gas - have to be more patient to keep constant momentum.
    We got it running good then at the end we huge a ring and it seized! So now we are trying to get it back together and might have to use stock motor parts.
    First race tmrw 10am so we will see what happens.
    I love a challenge and the unknown - being in that mind set brings me to life and I enjoy it so this is why I did this, even with 3 days of stuggle we are having so much fun! I also love to figure out how to ride a motorcycle I have never riden before or a bike that works way different than what your used to. It’s amazing the focus that comes out, the change of technique, change of approach into sections and figuring out how to set the bike up is another enjoyment !
    Doing the same thing, riding the same bike, and always having to race to win at my age seems a little boring and uninteresting.
    #chargelife

      Same, had an 87 cr 125 in 2000. Later got an 89 250. Both amazing but sometimes I wish I kept up on the 125 instead of buying the 250. Ended up giving it to a friend bc every moving part locked up but he did nice restore. 250 is just so much bike..

    Ryan, I'm from the Philippines, you're the MAN, you really did a fantastic job and proved something spectacular. It truely goes to show that it's not the bike, it's the rider. What you showed at Lorettas 20th to 4th was awesome. And if you won't mind, I would also like to say that Jeff Emig also did a good job on his 150 2 stroke.

      @@RyanHughesMX Thank you sir for the reply, much appreciated. And if I may, I would also like you to continue on your advocacy on safer bikes like one on the videos I saw that you said that instead of a 450, why not tune it down to a 350. You're damn right about that sir. Kids now a days think that because of the power of the 450, flying high is awesome. We don't want "please excuse me for saying this sir", another Magoo Chandler or David Bailey for that matter. You know what I mean sir. By the way, I'm glad you're doing great after the crash you had with that '79 Elsinore. In fact, I do have a '79 and planning to restore it one day. Keep safe sir and thanks again.

      Yep,---you caught the bike prices before the FIM production rule, (in the USA only, because we were kicking euro butt since 81.). Me too, or I never would have gotten into manufacturing and engineering or have a business today porting little 2-stroke engines that I sell all over the world today. I bought 3 new bikes from the age of 12 in 1974 to 1981, making only $1.00/hr part time. They totaled the cost of this bike in 1986, (the production rule caused the bikes to triple in cost over the next 5 years). Go find "Your a good sport Charlie Brown" from 1975, and you will see how CB payed for a bike. Yes, there is a .5hr Charlie Brown vid on Motocross.

    • @EarthSurferUSA

      It is more than sad to me, the force of the production rule in 1986 and the 4-stroke forced on the industry---should be criminal. With out those 2 things,--a new bike would probably be about 4 grand right now---and a 2 stroke.

  • @EarthSurferUSA
    @EarthSurferUSA 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The first year of the FIM production rule in the USA only, (cause we won the MXofN 5 times in a row at that point), and the first year prices starting going up artificially, (because of the regulation). That bike costs $2,300 off the show room floor, and the bikes tripled in cost from 86 to 91. From 1974 to 1985, where many bike advancements have been made, bikes went from $1,000 to about $1,500 for a new 250. Now, the 4-stroke was forced on the industry, over doubling the cost of a bike again---and we can't figure out why the sport is hurting. I was there. I bought new bikes as a kid making $1.00/hr part time starting at the age of 12 in 1976. I saw it happen---and I understand what happened to our dying sport.

    I had an 86 CR 250, that motor was great. Imagine where we would be if the kept up development of the 2 strokes instead of the 4 strokes

    • @EarthSurferUSA
      @EarthSurferUSA 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Broke earlier. The 2-stroke engine was fine, and free market. The 4-stroek are government demanded---and not affordable for 9 out of 10 kids who bought a 85 or earlier bike. Turn them into a space ship, and imagine where the sport will be. Remember, the FIM can't fill a pro starting gate in Europe today. That is were we are.

    Maybe the CRs didn't have a rebound circuit on these shocks cuz it def seemed to be a bit bouncier than usual... I think you were using this to your advantage getting into that bouncy kind of GrooVe you got into it helps you keep your rhythm with the consistent kind of up and down modulations that begin to resemble a program, a program of a heightened sense of spatial relationships, reinforcing itself with A1 experience,...technique,...natural ability....you can take a bikes strengths and make them stronger while minimizing the weaknesses by making less and less mistakes,..and instantly adapting to the older platform.....your seamless portrayal she sounds really crisp and jetted perfectly.....sounds meatier than most 80s cr's cuz maybe u are using better components when rebuilding her but all in all, one of the best sounding 86 cr250s I ever heard!!! and, it actually sounds better than just about any other 250 2 stroke dirt bike for that matter.

      Ahh no wonder, that motor sounds way too beefy to be stock, although Im sure Ryan could still make a stock 86 cr seem extra special, just the precise scalpel like inputs are always on point and balanced, def a joy to watch man and machine at a high level of harmony!!
