- Let's do a ballistics gel test and review of the 12 Gauge Winchester Super-X 1oz Rifled Slugs fired from a Mossberg 500 Retrograde pump action shotgun chambered in 12 gauge with an 18 inch smooth-bore barrel.
Checkout my leather gear handmade by me, just for you here: www.masonleather.com/store/c1...
All shots are fired from a distance of 50 yards to encompass the majority of common real world hunting scenarios.
I will be shooting into 10% ballistics gel from www.clearballistics.com that has been calibrated to meet the FBI ballistics testing protocol.
While ballistics gel isn’t an exact proxy for big game, small game, predators or defensive situations, it does provide a repeatable medium through which to test various bullets and ammunitions against each other.
With each type of ammo tested I collect data on bullet penetration depth, bullet weight retention, bullet expansion and muzzle velocity.
For reference, bullet expansion is measured at the widest expanded point using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Caliper.
Bullet weight is measured using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Scale after having removed as much ballistics gel as possible from the expanded bullets.
Bullet velocity is measured using a ProChronoPal chronograph set approximately 7’ from the shooting bench.
I am fully aware that a chronograph measuring bullet velocity from 7’ away from the muzzle is going to register a slower velocity than if velocity were measured directly at the muzzle, but that difference is going to be so small as to be all but irrelevant in regards to comparison of actual measured velocity versus factory stated velocity.
My goal with these ballistics gel tests is to provide hunters like you and I with the most objective information possible to help us make the best choice for our particular hunting situation.
The results of these tests are my own and I cannot guarantee the same or similar performance on your part. The views and opinions expressed in this video are solely my own.
All videos are filmed in a safe and controlled environment on a private range with all applicable safety precautions by a trained professional. - บันเทิง

Your content is great. Everything you post is something I’m interested in.
Glad to be of service!
I have to second this. 💯👌
Cool video Mason!
As a moose guide, I've seen a pile of black bear, caribou and moose dropped with the 2 3/4" version of this slug up here in Canada. I have since switched over to Federal's Truball Deep Penetrator slugs and have been impressed with their performance.
Would love to see you test those in gel!
Glad to be of service! I’ll definitely be doing Federal when I get the chance, I’ve heard nothing but good things about the Tru-ball stuff
Thanks for conducting this test. I've seen others where the slugs were fired at relatively close range, and they tended to overexpand or fragment to pieces. Which resulted in considerably less penetration.
Glad to be of service!
In my experience, rifled slugs tend to get very good accuracy out of an improved cylinder choke, maybe give that a try and see if it helps!
What kind of moa do u get at 50 and 100 yards?
Have had a wide range of performance from those, from splitting in 2 twisted pieces to looking like you could reload the same slug and using again. Great videos sir.
Glad to be of service!
Good data. 1.0 oz foster slugs are very effective on whitetail for sure. Of course some folk really like using them for black bear and hogs.
They're good for moose and grizz too
In my experience rifled choke tubes have a series positive impact on slug accuracy on every standard slug in every gun ive tried it in.
Outstanding, I may try a different barrel on this one in the future
I was really hoping you started testing shotgun loads. Thank you. Your awsome.
Glad to be of service!
Great video Mason. Great point also on tying the right slugs to the gun. My first shotgun nearly 40 years ago now was a Mossberg 500 shotgun. Thanks for sharing!
Glad to be of service!
I still have my late dad's mossberg 500, "ol betsy".
@@zzz7zzz9 great shotgun. 👌💯
It is interesting to note that the billed velocity increase between the two was just about spot on. If you found a choke that got them shooting straight, the magnums would kill anything walking.
As always nicely done. Thanks.
Excellent video. Thanks
Glad to be of service!
Really love the shotgun leather
💯
These things compare pretty good to big bore muzzleloaders and black powder rifle cartridges. That bore size and 2 feet of penetration with good weight retention makes these Super X slugs serious deer 🦌 or bear 🐻 or pig 🐷 hunting ammo.
Absolutely
Or bandit hunting ammo.
Another good video, thanks
Glad to be of service!
after testing slug 12 ga shells and hunting with them for so lomg that winchester is my least favorites. federal and Remington my favorites. I've noticed the Winchester slugs when shooting rapidly the recoil pushing slugs farther back in the shells. i could shake the shells from my6 shot pump shotgun and fell and hear slug movement. and this most definitely has affected accuracy greatly. for years i used a 3×9 scope off sandbags testing. Winchester 12 slugs got to the point in testing accuracy that i only use one shell in the firearm at a time getting wonderful accuracy even at 75 yds with grandpas old high standard police issue with scope. with my mossberg 500 scoped 12 ga shooting crisco cans no problem 100yd. but federal or Remington slugs same shotguns loading 6 shells in shotguns a rarely had slugs backup in shells. papa wishing you well 😊
Sometimes less is more!
I always found the difference was I got thumped around more for no reason with 3” Winchester slugs and deer died just as fast with the 2 3/4” slugs.
My 870 loves the 2 3/4” 1oz. Winchester slugs, didn’t care too much for any of the Remington Sluggers.
If you can find the 3” Black Magic slugs they are like the pinnacle of rifled slugs. They are going to recoil and they are not cheap.
The black magic are the best to take down charging grizzly bears
Good job!
Glad to be of service!
Great video
Glad to be of service!
Good test.
Glad to be of service!
I only shoot the 2.75" inch Winchester slugs out of my 28" vent rib Remington 870, with a cylinder bore choke tube. I consistently get a 3 shot "clover leaf" group at 50 yards and they have great knock down power!! I can't get Remington slugs to group with a darn, go figure!!
Always been my experience that 2 3/4 slugs are more constant with accuracy. With a rifled barrel even more so... Ithaca 37 deer slayer is basically a tack driver at 50 yards.
I had a Marlin 512 bolt action that really liked the 2.75” Hornady Custom Lite Sabots
Between federal, remington, and winchester, they always sway to the left or right, remington some how goes up and down at 10 yard, this is coming out of a smoothbore 22inch barrel, browning gold hunter, im looking for a fully rifle barrel at this moment as sabot tends to be more accurate these day
Great for home protection.
I love the retro grade furniture, I wish my 590 had it.
I have been trying to find some for my 590a1
My stocks were completely redone and hand checkered, the way they come from the factory isn’t like they look in the video, still nice but much darker and the checkering isn’t as good.
Hornady SST 12 gauge slugs at 2000 ft./s I’d like to see what they actually going that be a good video
Do the federal truball next
Exactly the info I was looking for delivered in a way that doesn't make me want to bang my head into a table like a lot of the other TH-cam ballistics channels.
Any chance you could do the same type of testing with Remington and Federal too? I know it ain't cheap but I'm searching for the king of the Foster slugs.
🤣 I’m glad to be of service! Absolutely, the Remington video will be out in the next several weeks and I will be doing the same for ALL slugs.
To my understanding, shotgun barrel length doesn’t affect velocity anywhere near handgun or rifle barrel length differences do. I’ve seen experiments concluding about 7 fps slower per inch of barrel. So even using an 18” barrel like you were, I’d think your velocities would be closer to the advertised 1600 and 1760 listed on the box than what you were getting. Does that matter all that much for slugs? Probably not. But it would sure be nice to get the ballistics they advertise
The 3's are accurate from my 28" CZ 612 with no choke. Hope that's helpful.
When it comes to foster slugs, i’ve seen modified cylinders do better than improved cylinders and full chokes do worse than cylinders, Improved done a little better than cylinder
Do the 20 ga also. THANKS
I will at some point
SuperX 3" slugs deform on impact into bizarre shapes and travel through into random areas of whitetail deer..normal hole on one side normal hole on other side during broadside impact, quartering away impacts deflect in all sorts of directions .
Remington 3"on the other hand seems to either travel slower or the slug is a harder and plow straight through and I have never recovered one in a whitetail
The 2 3/4” slugs are longer than stated, as I can only fit four in my Benelli M4 compared to the five snap caps it can hold.
If your bore is a smooth bore, then is it really a slug gun?
Using a rifled slug gun, you should try Winchester gold partition two and three-quarter inch. Three inch doesn't groop very well.
Id be curious to see how these did out of a 14 inch 590. Wonder how much more velocity is lost.
You kinda look like Tom hanks in the movie Forrest gump
I've noticed that magnum loads in a short barrel tend to be inaccurate due to excessive muzzle blast which causes the slug or shot to disperse more than a lighter loading. IMHO.
I always found the 2 3/4 vs 3" slugs interesting because the ones I use in 20ga are the same velocity so.. what's the point in going 3", odd right? I have those same win slugs in 12ga.
Interesting ~ I’ll be doing 20g at some point
3inch slugs r never accurate in any of my gun
They certainly leave a lot to be desired
Have you ever shot them through a rifled barrel?
Video request for 00 buckshot please
If u continue doing shot gun ammo maybe a cheap walmart shot gun with a 20 to 24 inch barrel I think they have a Hatfield for like $230 ish
Strange the same slug, but 3 inch didn't group well
308 copper
Test
I had better luck with remington slugger
Wow those things look like they’re awfully soft. Softer than I would have thought.
The 3inch isn't a the same has a x on it instead of a hollow point wish you would have looked
These are both “rifled slugs hollow point” as printed right on the box. It’s an ounce of lead, if there’s some little X on one I can guarantee you it makes zero material difference.
Don’t know if it really makes a difference, but the 3” version does not drill the little hollow point in the slug. And Winchester put a little X on the face. Technically the box is wrong. I shoot a lot of slugs. I found the 2 3/4 are great. The 3” shell groups 4 times wider at 75 yards. The 3” also uses completely different gas seals and wads than the 2 3/4.
Thank you for your reply could you try federal next.i noticed federal 2 3/4 are shorter than other brands
Which ones do you favor for HD ? 😊
You should get a Garmin chronograph to replace the one you have now
The one I have works perfectly fine
Why don't you buy one for him then? Making TH-cam videos is probably very expensive for him to produce.
They cost about 5x what the chronograph he already has does.
If he breaks the current one maybe
Bro got that pump from fortnite and 💀
