I detest modern American journalism. Some bits are better than others, but all of it has gone so far down hill in my forty-odd years-local and national, public and commercial, television and print and radio. I can't stand it.

Peter Jennings is very calm and emphaty when delivering the news. I really love him even he was long gone.
Tom Brokaw, Dan Rather, Peter Jennings, Hugh Downs, Sam Donaldson, and so many great journalists of yesterday.
Now we have David Muir, Lester Holt, Norah O'Donnell.... I hope they would not allowed the evening news turn into a mainstream media.... I love that traditional evening newscasts.

You said it! Captivating is what he was: you start watching Peter Jennings and you don't want to stop; you don't want _World News Tonight_ to be over in half an hour. Nowadays things suck. It's exactly the opposite: somebody turns on David Muir (or whoever that "anchor" is on ABC nowadays), and all I want to do is murder the TV.

My sixth grade teacher Mrs. Yarlettes was best friends with Christa McAuliffe. Therefore, most of us, as 6th graders beheld our very first GRAPHIC tragedy [ watching this LIVE on television ], at Raymond Elementary School, Brockton MA USA. Mrs. Yarlettes bursted into tears and we were all oblivious and couldn’t process the totality of her hysteria to the extent adults [ did that day ]. We just wanted to go to recess. To play tag, some kick ball and others to stare at their ‘crush.’

I don't think I understood, either. I had turned six some days before. It was my habit on weekday afternoons after getting home from kindergarten to watch _Scooby-Doo_ and _He-Man_ and on this day I waited while something else came on instead. I waited and waited and didn't understand why my shows weren't on. Eventually my mom, overhearing the TV from the next room, got the sense that something important had happened and came in to watch. Then I also understood that something important had happened and my cartoons wouldn't be on. I think it was only four to eight years later that I realized that the loss of the Challenger, which I did hear about over those years, was the thing that had been on TV that afternoon. Then, around late 1995, a classmate lent me his family's VHS tape that had been recorded from various TV channels on January 28, 1986; I took it home and watched it that evening, and some of it dredged up what felt like _ancient_ memories, from almost ten years before (a period that feels a lot longer at fifteen than it does in your forties).
Only in adulthood, using the Internet to revisit the coverage, did I begin to have an emotional relationship with the event.
Today, seeing the kid in this video say "it made me feel bad", I got teary-eyed.

  • @mysteriouzcat4207

1986 was the year full bag of mixed emotions from the tragic moments of the Challenger to Introduce Christian singer Sandi Patti to the US and to the world thru singing the Stratospheric version of National Anthem of the United States of America for the rededication of the Statue of Liberty.
And this very...... an old school video! Nice!

Sadly, had they not done a "won't even try" scrub a few days before the ill fated launch (due to a weather forecast of rain and thunderstorms at launch time) they would have been fine most likely.
The forecast for that day had been for thunderstorms, due to the very cold front that caused the very cold weather on Tuesday. A low pressure wave formed on the front and slowed it down.
The weather at launch time was perfect winds at the geound and aloft, clear skys and temperatures in the 70s. Perfect flying weather even for a flawed joint design. But they scrubbed and then choose to launch in the most marginal weather conditions since Apollo 12.

    • @drpastry
      @drpastry 7 ปีที่แล้ว

+zoomer30 do you mean the weather a few days prior to the actual lauch or the day of the launch? The night before the launch the temps dropped below freezing and ice had formed all over the launch pad and ground crews tried to de-ice all they could but the ice wasn't the cause as we know,it was a faulty o-ring design and neglect on NASA Admins. part to get it off the ground in a hurry to launch. At the time of the launch itself (11:38am est) the temp. wasn't in the 70's at all.Anyway just wondering if you were talking about the days prior to the launch or the initial launch day itself as you and most know the launch was delayed several times for various reasons and why was NASA in such a hurry to launch. Thank you

Ron M I cant remember the day of the week, but I think it was Sunday. The forcast for that day was so bad they didn't even bother. The forecast for that day was for rain, thunderstorms and wind during the entire launch window, and only getting worse as the day wore on. No sense wasting time and money on a sure scrub.
Well, the weather forecast did not hold. The launch director and one of his people went outside at what would have been launch time and it was warm, 70-75 degrees, little wind, and not a cloud in the sky. The LD said "You know? I think we should have launched" They knew that the cold weather was comjng.

If you live in the US and have Netflix, watch the Challenger miniseries. It explains how NASA was looking to improve its image and spark new interest in space exploration. The accident was the rock bottom point of a multi-year attempt to make space seem more accessible to all.

God created us all. Doesn’t matter if people are petty and don’t believe in him. He gets to judge them upon their death. So they certainly do see the face of God their creator and he tells them, “depart from me I never knew you.” And they aren’t welcomed into the Pearly Gates, they are cast to hell forever.
