- The Porsche 911 is one of the ultimate benchmarks of the sports car world in literally every decade which it features in. Even so, the 996 generation as you can see in this video doesn't quite match the values of all other eras of Porsche's icon.
So why is this? And what is the 996 Carrera actually like to drive? Let's head out the roads of Emsworth courtesy of Porsche specialist Philip Raby and take a closer look...

Great review - thanks. I owned one 996, foolishly sold it and am now looking to buy my second having learnt my lesson! You are right, a 997 of equivalent mileage would cost another 50% on the price. I can use that money for many other things...
Love my 996.1 C4. Would have been just as happy with a Tip but am also fully enjoying the manual trans. I also love those special C4 wheels that this car (and my own) has.
I have the same thing. Would not even consider the tip
When you only pay so much for a car, and it drives so incredibly, you tend to ignore some* of the quality issues. You have to remember this is a partnership between porsche and TOYOTA. The fact that this "sports car" is still putting a smile on my face 20 years later is impressive.

The 996 Carrera 4 has started calling me. It’s all-wheel-drive and has 4 seats. That makes them a practical vehicle for the price. 911s have always been great cars for their time period. We’ve been spoiled by the 997 was after the 996.
Very good review. I own a 986. Looking for a 996. You've really given some good points
Some good points - I just purchased a 3.4 996 in manual, one of the earlier 1998 models with the cable operated throttle body. These are definitely becoming collectable if in good condition - I’ve been watching prices steadily rise and decided to take the plunge with my first Porsche before these too become unattainable. Great car!
Absolutely, not too long ago they seemed to be hovering around 7-8k. Not anymore, haha
I've owned a 71 914, and a 79 SC. Both were a blast to own and I wish I had today. I currently own a 99 Carrera and this car is such a better handling machine. More powerful engine, suspension tighter, 175 mph top speed, plus top down in the Summer.
Nice one 👍
Great video I definitely agree with your comments. I see these cars continue to appreciate. I believe people's view on the headlights gen 1 and gen 2 will actually increase value as time goes on. As you mention the 996 was first water cooled, last true sports version vs electronic Grand Tour. It's an amazing car to drive and I hope more get the experience.
Its just so much fun to drive
great info thanks
Nice view, tks
Nice review but it’s not a 4s it’s a 4 👍
Yeah I noticed after uploading, lol. Philip Raby has two similar ones for sale and I gave this one the wrong title
Great review, the best part about the 996 is the entry level price point. Thanks!
Bro please upload unsung heroes 🤗🤗
Edit: nice vid
It will return, possibly even this week
hello mate are you local to emsworth?
No I'm a few hours away
Maybe some hot hatches can beat it but I was able to match a Golf R in my gen 1 996.
The Mercedes A45 AMG for example, takes barely 4 seconds to hit 60 mph.
In reality the Golf R driver must have not been pushing or not be as skilled. Silly capable speeds but I’d rather my 996
Have you considered doing an R33 video.
I was actually in talks to cover one months ago, in Midnight Purple no less, but it fell through unfortunately
@@HSGAutomotive ahhh. Ok hopefully in the future there will be a vid. Imo the r33 is the best gen of gtr
@@daaud_liverpool1515 It's my Skyline of choice for sure
@@HSGAutomotive Yeah in a way i can relate to the R33.
Although. The idle sounds quiet.
That's the same on all 911's I've reviewed tbh
@@HSGAutomotive no wonder
The only thing purists really hate, is a tiptronic .......
Haha, I guess so
but why? they are actually brilliant
@@Amazingfeet Have you driven one? I have. And it doesn’t fit that sportscar at all... When the PDK came along, things changed for the better ..... But each to his own, peace 😮✌️
@@mortenberg2897 Yes, maybe the one you drove was broken!! I much prefer a proper auto than the terrible pdk which is basically a robotic manual, with a proper auto the response in instant as no clutch dipping etc the tip is brilliant in both manual and auto mode,
Who the hell will use such car in the winter ?
Plenty of people use exotic cars in bad weather, especially in England. It’s bad weather most of the time
