The weird thing is that this, Digimon and Pokemon all started within a span of two years.
Not sure who's ripping off who but they did it really damn quickly.
I know very little about Digimon, but it's well known how Pokemon came into being. Pokemon came out a year earlier, but IIRC early Digimon was very little like Pokemon, so it might be fair to say that it "ripped it off" over the years to become more similar.
KittXenn There was no ripping off, the only real thing the two series had in common was the -mon at the end and the obvious having monsters in them as a result of said -mon title. While Pokémon was more human + pet/animal and was way more dependent on the main characters personalities, Digimon was more about living along side intelligent beings (they can even talk and have more personality than repeating their own name). I really found it weird that all the drama for ripping each other off was so... dumb. Even the evolution mechanic was completely different (well only to get a slap in the face afterwards with the whole "mega-evolution" thing)
***** There was no ripping off by any means. To fill in the blanks, Digimon originally debuted as virtual toys inspired by and similar to the Tamagotchi brand which released in 1997 by Bandai. While Digimon took the V-pet route, Pokemon debuted on the GameBoy as a full game based on collecting and battling, not necessarily raising a "pet".
Even the more recent seasons of Digimon are nothing like Pokemon. With the points mentioned by 99sins, season 2 expanded on this adding the element of Digimon slavery, armor digivolution through eggs and DNA digivolution combining the data of two Digimon to form a new one. Season 3 tied in with the existing TCG, introducing Digi-Modify which could enhance a Digimon's abilities or grant special items by swiping a card and adding it to their data. Season 4 saw the digidestined themselves transforming into Digimon through Spirit Evolution. Season 5 saw the creation of an organization whose purpose was to conceal the digital world and digimon from the human world and settle related conflicts privately. Season 6 takes notes from Season 2, this time with fusions between more than 2 Digimon. In my humble opinion, Digimon adapts and allows its audience to grow with new characters. Aside from season 6 which reverted to a lighter and younger tone, the original 5 seasons progressed in both seriousness and storyline with the plots become darker. Pokemon sticks with Ash as the never aging protagonist and tends to remain with light, younger plots and bright colors to retain their core audience.

Trusting the fanboy wars at all is generally a bad idea.
Yeah I'm not sure, I think it's possible that Pokemon came out first in Japan, but all those series of things came out within two-years of each-other, in a time when information didn't spread so quickly either. So nobody really cared.
In all seriousness the Disc Shrine system is one of the greatest game mechanics to ever exist
It could exist today by having a game like monster rancher run on JPEG's and having it read the photo data.

I just saw a giant snake monster named after a Harry potter reference get kamehameha'ed by a naked centaur cat lady in an arena.
The most traumatic thing is jumping into this game with no knowledge of the fact your monster can die and then you see it die.
The tears are real, up until this day.

This game holds up TO THIS DAY; mostly from the sheer fact that CDs can be pretty hard to come by nowadays so finding a CD is actually like finding a disc stone in the show. Each monster has a bit more significance now that I have, like, 4 CDs in my entire house.

Kenny-FZ Same. My first monster that ever died was my Arrowhead. I wasn't sure what was happening when the cutscene first started. And that funeral...holy crap. I mean they REALLY go dark with that.

Kenny-FZ I know the feeling. I was eight when my first monster died. It was a Golem/Suezo on MR1, and I spent 20-30 minutes crying in the bathroom until my older brother reloaded the file from right before hand. I remember young me had been so proud of it because he had made it to A rank.

You are SO right about the Grim death scene part, it scarred me. once, when I was a kid, My most beloved monster died, and the game showed Me how it died, My chest ache from that scene because the time, memories and effort I've gone through with it, disappeared forever (until I know what save files is LOL)...
and then the Burial part came up, no joke, I'm literary crying, the song, the scene just hit right in the chest, feels like saying goodbye to a most precious friend I've ever had.
and after that, I just shut down my PS1, feels bad about myself, thinking what have i done to that poor thing even when I'm going to sleep. then I never touched PS1 for like a couple of months or so because whenever I played it, I always remembered that one particular scene, Feels bad man.
(And when I came back to play, It's grave just sitting there, in the back of the house, forever haunt me.)

Ahh. I remember when my first monster (a Tiger) died in Monster Rancher DS, I was sooo sad. I was like "alright, another day of training! ... why are you just laying there, Nova? Are you sick?" then they told me he died.. I felt soooo sad but I loaded the game, let him play his last tournament and froze him for fusion... Sorry but I'm not letting all those hours of work just DIE

@@jaketucker2559 old comment I realize, but yes there was a ds version, and players unlocked monsters by either alphanumeric codes or drawn symbols via the touchscreen (once you unlocked a monster you could summon a carbon copy from a logbook similar to other series entries). There was also a gba version that used alphanumeric codes or book summoning. They called the things you get the monsters from "tablets" instead of "mystery discs" in-game in an effort to explain away not using cd's for the portable versions if I recall. Imo the tablet system was a little weird after being so used to the disc-based format, but it worked fine for cartridge-based games.
Monster Rancher... Awwww hell yeah! Seriously, we used to spend all day playing this game on the PS1, and it was amazing. My dad's CD collection was often raided by us looking for pimp critters, and the first we saw a monster die, I could actually remember crying my eyes out; it was that emotional!
Also, before this video came out, I literally had plans to talk about Monster Rancher in my next video - a top 10 list, so imagine my suprise when I saw this appear in my Sub box! Seriously though, this was an awesome video. The MLG scenes were slightly cheesy, but everything else was mostly spot on.

I know, I think its probably because the game is rare, coming out at the peak of the virtual pet monster craze in the late 90's. I've seen copies online go up for pretty expensive prices, so I consider myself lucky to still have our copy after all those years!
First time I saw my monster died, I immediately turned off my PS1 and ignored playing the game for a while (and by that I meant for 2 years... I never played it again after 2 whole fucking years) not just because I was sad about how my lil' Bunny, which is by far my favorite monster of all time, but also how it spooked me out. Though, that was me when I was 6 years old, I didn't really understand the concept between life and death, so it was a hard time accepting it.
But now, I react in the most horrible way... "Oh my monster died... lemme unfreeze my other monster."

Yeah, it's definitely the less praised and loved of the big three. I guess this way it never gets soiled with bad new designs and stuff though? At the very least it lives on.
***** The last Monster Rancher released in the US was Monster Rancher DS. The problem is that the summoning was lame. You drew monsters on the touch screen or did an incantation. The best part of Monster Rancher was finding random monsters in your collection of your discs. Your favorite CD may have produced a crap monster but you loved it anyways.
They've tried to recreate this in the digital era, as in without discs, on the DS and Gameboy Advance. There's just no fun in just pushing buttons to get a monster. You might as well have been using a Game Shark on Monster Rancher 2.
I suppose they could do it using IP addresses of websites or something but that's something more akin to Digimon.
Yeah, from what I've seen on LParchive, Monster rancher is like tamagothcis and Princess Maker 2 combined. (Which is superb) If only I could find a copy of one of the games...

Love this game, if you can master the mechanics, it's one of the most satisfying games possible. I'd also recommend Monster Rancher 4 on the PS2

I checked Wikipedia, and Monster Rancher 2 has the most monsters (over 400)
I put a lot of time into Monster Rancher 4. It was so much fun, and it was always awesome seeing what monster I would get with each disk.
Sadly, it was always the most random disks that gave me the most awesome monsters. I think my best one ever came from a Season 6 Xena disk.
I always wanted to buy the Monster Rancher tv series and see what monster I got from it's disks. XD

So much nostalgia from my childhod seeing this. I used to sink hundreds of hours into this game as a kid. It was even better since I learned about it from a friend so we could trade tips and battle our monsters. Once I even trained a monster that made it to the strongest cup in the game (a knight with phoenix mixed in). He did die a few weeks later, but when I saw the signs of dying I kept saving and loaded him alive to save him for some fights with my friends.
I even used to play without CDs since at the time I couldn't understand english so I never knew what that CD-place did and always got a Mocchi since I just left the Monster Rancher 2 disk in. But an older friend of my friend knew it and so it got a lot cooler trying every CD in the house for cooler monsters, like the Express Worm.
You should try Princess Maker 2!(The new steam version is the easiest to get) It's really quite superb, and shares some similarities with this game, although... it's with a girl instead of monsters.
The def leppard CDs got me the best monsters. They were those wolf types. I love those.

Played this at a friends house. We spent so much time switching out his sisters music CDs. She had HUNDREDS of CDs. We were like kids on Christmass morning checking out all those CDs to see what we got!
Monster Rancher 2 and 3 were my literal childhood. I loved Pokemon and Digimon but Monster Rancher always holds a place in my heart.

Thank you for bringing back the memory of the monster rancher anime for me. I used to love that show as a kid and totally forgot about it until seeing the yellow monster on the thumbnail.
Monster Rancher 2 & 4 were a huge part of my childhood. I remember my brother, my cousins, and I all taking turns raising our monsters. It was the best. We were so jealous when one of my cousins discovered the phoenix!!
Guitar hero always spawned the Phoenix (in mr4). That was the best thing at the end of the game.

I still remember the horrible trauma this game caused me....I had a Mustard Zumm I loved so much....trained him for many years, beat many other monsters in tournaments aaaaaand he got killed in a damn expedition ;_; That damn death scene is one of the most soul-scarring moments in videogame history ;_;
I Spent SOOOO much time with this game through my childhood and teen years. Monster Rancher 1, 2 and the card-game ones. I was obsessed. Never saw the franchise come back. It had really interesting mechanics for making your monster really seem autonomous and it's own independent creature. I do miss that XD

Here is my guide: The Music CD: Big Fun Party Mix 3 contains the "Pheonix" monster, which is by far the strongest monster in the game.
(It's technically a "Legendary Monster" by the standards of the Monster Rancher TV Show, as finding it was the entire purpose of the Series)
Of course, you need to become an Official IMA trainer to be allowed to read the Disc, which is by far the hardest thing to do in this darn game >_>.

Monster Rancher was honestly the most addicting game I ever played on a console that was single player. Played that game non stop. Remember reloading my PS1 every time my monster failed obstacles lol

In Monster Rancher 1, I got a Pixie to last up to 6 years (and is currently frozen atm). Considering how short their lifespan is, that was my greatest accomplishment in all the monster ranchers.
How? And how did u know about monster lifespan? I raised kitty and after 2 years celebration, then colt says "it looks exhausted we should consider to retire it" (like allert the monster gonna die soon) and i was like "huh" even my suezo got "exhausted" when it 3 yrs 10 month

I loved this game. My best friend and I spent years playing this and raising different monsters and using various methods of training. The community for this game was rather large at one time. Which is sad since the succeeding games did not do as well.
My brothers tamagatchi got me to walk on the United center when the Bulls were in their Jordan years, that thing survived a tenth row fall and got me to have something I will always remember.

Honestly, this game seems fairly fun. I like when the subject matter isn't always a crapshoot; SpaceHamster and ProJared have shown off some pretty cool stuff over the years.

The mint leaf and nuts oil is actually pretty fucking accurate when you start getting enough cash in, usually by taking some piece of shit you don't care about, always the first one because of course it is, and pushing the fucking thing fast enough to die and win as many fights as it can so you can get more monster unlocks.
i want to see a play through of this and the goal is to get 100 fame and the monster from the first CD is the monster you'll use untill it dies and then you start over

Ah man, I played Monster Rancher so much as a kid. Having a monster die was the wooooorst. Pretty sure it made kid me cry more than once.
I remember this game. Specifically, I remember being able to make monsters from CDs and nothing else. But that's enough for me to remember it fondly anyway.

I think this is possibly my most favourite game ever - I loved borrowing other people's CDs and then writing a list of what monster and sub type and stat would come out. My favourite was the Phoenix - it was awesome with its beam that with enough Skill and Int would take out a lot of enemies. Heads up - Save often. :)
I remember the Monster Rancher anime. In Italy arrived along with the success of Pokémon much like similar anime series like Digimon and Medabots with the hope of attract audience with the monster training/fighting theme, it was pretty cool.

I think there was some music game that took advantage of this as well. I forget the name though.
Betsy7Cat there was quite a few games that made you switch discs around, the music game you mentioned (vib-ribbon?) allowed you to put any music CD in and it would auto-gen a level for you, Dragon ball Z budokai tenkaichi 3 had its disc fusion to unlock game modes, and pretty much any PS1 RPG needed multiple discs to hold the full game ( like final fantasy VIII and its FOUR DISCS ).

Also I totally forgot about the games being on multiple discs thing. I don't know how I forgot that lol, considering how popular FF is.

Did some research and it seems the largest game (file-size wise) was RIVEN which had 5 discs.
apparently the game wasn't even that long, it just had A LOT of cinematic. like 3 hours...
and yea as Jonard Lolz mentioned, GameShark was another disc to add to the mess, though i don't recall the processes of using it, when did you switch the discs around using that thing?
I loved playing this game back then! The create a monster from any cd adds to the thrill and excitement of the game. You also sort of get an emotional attachment to your favorite monster especially after seeing it die. :( I hope this gets reintroduced in the newer consoles. 😊

That ending was seriously one of the funniest things I've seen all year, Space.
I remember when my friend came round with this game and we literally foraged the house for ALL the disks it was manic mad science!!!... we had a great time.
It's like your intro gets more and more epic for every video.
I had this game growing up and invested A LOT of time in it. I remember once I went through every single CD in the house and wrote everything you got from each disc down. I was also scarred for life when my monster who was super successful (and admittedly fair old) died. I remember turning it off without saving so they'd be alive still and I think they died again so I ended up turning it off and never playing that save file again to keep them alive...
You've reminded me of my rainbow dog monster Spatz, who lived a long life even though I sucked at battling (we're talking less than 2 fame, lol). RIP Spatz, RIP.
FINALLY someone reviews one of my ultimate favourite games. Monster Rancher was the best series of games I've ever played, and I wish more people had played it.

I wish I could have played this game back in the day. I love games you don't directly control. At least with animals. Not really The Sims all that much. Anyway, I have plenty of cds so I bet I could get some cool monsters!

Love it and still play it every now and then... especially like the ability to search monsters from other CDs. Tho it is annoying how every one of my monsters always ends up dying just when they're getting good at the arena.
