DIY How To Make A Baby Yoda Out Of Wool

  • This video is intended for you to be able follow along and make a similar baby Yoda (Grogu). I have a shorter video available if you would just like to watch the basic process. This project takes about 15-20 hours to finish, depending on the level of detail you want to achieve. This baby Yoda was 7 inches tall (17cm). I also have other tutorials available on my channel with more detail on the actual process of needle felting, if you are interested.
    **NOTE** regarding the white fuzz the real baby has on his head, my original intent was to reverse-felt the white/cream core wool. However, I ended up with a layer of dark olive green that I did not want to pull up by reverse-felting. However, if you have light core wool and only the one green layer, try the reverse-felting to achieve the white fuzz!
    Good luck, and most importantly, have fun!
    TOOLS:
    --A felting surface
    www.etsy.com/l... this one is like mine, but there are so many other options www.etsy.com/s...
    --Needle Felting (barbed) Needles:
    40T yellow and 36T black and optional green REVERSE Felting Needle for pulling the core wool through the top of the head to give him white fuzz on his head (you would do this at the very end)(www.etsy.com/s...)
    ** It is important to note that these needles can break, especially the 40 gauge, so you may want a spare needle or two. When shaping areas that are very dense, use the 36T to reduce the risk of breaking.
    optional Clover Needle Felting Pen

    WOOL:

    This is amazing! I'm just getting into needle felting animals. I'm actually searching for a tutorial video for my first project and came across your videos! I'm going to try one of your other tutorials for now since I'm a beginner, but I aspire to make a Baby Yoda as detailed as yours! More videos please! 🤩🥰

      Thank you :) I am so glad to hear it! The fox tutorial I made shows the most detail of how to do each step-- it is definitely my most thorough video (or rather set of videos). So even if you make a different animal, you could always look at some of the techniques on the fox if you need to. Have fun!

    Most of the felt at the craft stores isn't wool at all, but recycled plastic bottles. I did find one store that had nice wool pre-felt hidden way back on the bottom of a shelf. Had to really WANT to buy it. :-)

    • @kreationsbykrysta2134
      @kreationsbykrysta2134  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You’re welcome 😊 At around 41:00 I start creating a rod/tube shape from just the green wool. This wool rod shape gets attached along the top of the ear, but leave the ends unfelted. Then, blend one of the unfelted ends into the ear tip, and the other unfelted end will cover the chenille stem (pipe cleaner) and attach to the head. Just press that unfelted wool on top of the chenille stem and felt it over the stem onto the head by stabbing the wool into the head, around the wire stem. If you don't feel like you have enough loose wool to fully cover the chenille stem, you can also add more wool to cover it as you go. Just work in small amounts at a time.

    Thank you so much for sharing your incredible skills so that we can try too ❤️ your baby Yoda is incredibly well done and absolutely adorable! I am trying to follow you step by step and while I am quite happy with the face, I'm having a VERY hard time with the hands and feet! I've been stabbing for 3 days now (I'm not even joking!) and they're still soft and without shape.. Any suggestions? Am I using the wrong needle? Am I doing it wrong? I always struggle so much with small details...

      Maybe you could try wrapping the wool around a toothpick, holding it against the felting pad as you slide the toothpick out, and then quickly getting it felted in place? Some people also use a glue solution (like a mix of glue and water)-- but I would be really careful about doing that. It can work, but don't get it on your felting pad. Also, you'll have to wait for the glue to set before moving on. Plus, I imagine it could be sticky and frustrating depending on long it takes for you to form the fingers and have them hold shape. Another possible method would be to make a tiny armature for the hand using the chenille stems (pipe cleaners). Twist a couple small pieces together so you have 4 little fingers, cut them to the right size and try wrapping the wool around them. The wool clings very nicely to those, so you could wrap it really tight and felt it carefully (protect your needle from breaking). If the wool is still not clinging well enough, try combining the two ides. dip your chenille stem armature in a glue solution then wrap the wool around it. Small pieces can be tricky. Be patient with yourself, and take breaks. If all else fails, go for simple!!!! Don't stress over it. Just make a really nicely dense felted disc shape (the size of the whole hand + fingers) and then with some shape scissors, cut the disc to it becomes the little fingers attached to a hand. Felt the cut edges to secure them and finalize the shape. And if that seems too stressful, just make a little disc shape, and felt in some lines as separation on the fingers (like a cabbage patch doll hand from a long time ago). Most importantly, have fun with your project. There is not one way to do it, so just do what is fun for you! Good luck!

Be patient with yourself, and take breaks. You can also simplify the entire hand/foot. It doesn't have to have elaborate fingers and toes. You could just felt a little disc shape as the hand and then felt lines into that disc to indicate the shape of fingers and toes. Best of luck!

    Do you have any tips for felting using handmade felting wool? I just started but it seems a little straggly at the end compared to felting wool that you buy.

    • @kreationsbykrysta2134
      @kreationsbykrysta2134  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, there are certain sheep breeds that produce different textures of wool that will felt more smoothly, but I am not very savvy on which ones. I usually use Corriedale and Merino. However, I have found most wool can get pretty smooth with more felting. You can felt the wool to be very dense, in fact, so much so that you can't really squeeze/squish it anymore. Once it is dense, and less soft and squishy, I find the fibers will be tucked inside and held in place pretty easily. However, I am sure there is also nothing wrong with trimming the surface with small scissors if there are some straggly pieces you just can't tame! ;) There are some needle felting groups on Facebook you can join that welcome people to post questions and you will probably get a wealth of information from people who know much more than I do, and probably have been felting for longer than me as well!

      I understand, and I am sorry for this inconvenience. I have to balance what is a reasonable length of time for the videos while still showing as much helpful information as possible. It is not reasonable for me to create a tutorial that is 15-20 hours long (which is how long it takes to make each sculpture). So that leaves me with the options of (1) cutting out portions of the process entirely, or (2) speeding them up. I do try to slow it down every time I am showing a specific technique, but the rest of the process I choose to speed up rather than omit it and just skip ahead to the next potion.

      Haha! I suppose he isn't swimming in his little robe, like he often appears to in the show. The prefelt that I was able to obtain was only 12 inches long so I was limited on how big around it could reach in a single piece. If I made another (which I will probably not), I would consider adding a seam in the back of his robe, using two pieces of prefelt (as I mentioned in the video), and allowing a more baggy look. However, if the robe is truly needle felted as part of sculpture, there is a limit to how loose it can be and still be secure. The alternative would be to actually sew clothes (using thread and fabric), which would give the freedom to have the robe completely unattached to the sculpture and as baggy as you would like.
