What did I trade in my Leica Q2 for? No guesses, no hints!

  • After about a year and a half I traded in my Leica Q2.
    The Q system quickly caught my attention and I was excited about how I could use it for wedding photography. For months it was always in my bag and I would experiment and try new ways to incorporate it into my wedding coverage. I always found the camera to have a terrifically sharp image and it couldn’t have been easier to use. Over time, I became less enamoured by the look of the photos and felt myself wanting to use it less and less. I pulled it out for just one wedding this year and made the decision, almost then and there, that it was time to go.
    On to something I’ve wanted to have in my bag for years. The prestige, the wonder. Something I will have in my bag probably until the end, which is a crazy realisation to have. What could it be ...

    Teri, I’ve only started watching your videos recently, but I’m hooked on your presentation style. It’s smooth. Like you’re having a conversation instead of giving a lecture. By way of introduction, I’m a Theologian (USN) and a diehard Leician enthusiast. While searching for a review on one thing or another, one of your videos popped up and I decided to watch. The fact that you don’t appear to be peddling the gear, but actually use it professionally gave you instant credibility with me. Today I watched this video. I watched it primarily because of the title instantly caught my attention. Ironically, I am waiting for my brand new Leica MP Black Paint to arrive. I ordered it in November. I was really trying to justify having an M11, SL2-S, the Q2 (Dawn) and an MP. I had already decided that the Q2 was going to have to go but I wasn’t getting much interest for stores that I have a relationship with for consignment because they felt the interest in it wouldn’t warrant a good price. But I never gave any thought to its trade in value until I watched your video. Ask the camera store manager (he’s a friend) shortly after watching your video. Now thanks to you, my MP will not only be free - but I’ll be getting some cash back. Turns out I was talking to the wrong camera stores. The Q2 is a hot buy in Japan where I’m stationed. Thank you very much. I just became your newest subscriber. Continued happiness and success to you and yours. Be Blessed, Doc Chaps

      Hi Doc! Wow thanks so much for your kind words and for taking the time to write this! I do the videos as a small side project and like documenting my work where I can along the way. Because I am talking about how I actually use them there is no script, I try to keep it very conversational. This is so encouraging! I also love so much that you got a great trade in for your q2!! That’s super exciting that this video helped with that. I never knew I could trade in either, mine wasn’t a full trade, I had to pay a little more. I didn’t mine at all :) have a wonderful week over in Japan!

      I agree with you on that. The focal length is fixed and you need a 24-70 f2.8 or a choice of primes including 24 but also perhaps a 50 and 85mm f1.8 for weddings. A great one lens compromise is a full frame 35mm or equivalent to complement the 24mm field of view given by the 28mm nominal Q2 using one’s feet to frame as desired.

    Not sure if you're from SF, but please be very careful with your engagement/wedding stuff when shooting in the city. Wedding photographers have been heavily targeted for the last couple years now. I feel the same about the Q2M as well. It definitely is impressive, but it's quirky and just doesn't have the same flow and feeling as my typ246 did. I thought I'd use it for some video snippets and the macro function, but I just haven't. I'll be trading it for the M11M. I miss using a rangefinder.

    Accidentally stumbled upon this video. Read the comments. Sheeesh.. 🤦🏻‍♂️
    Look if it was all about your feel of how using MP vs Q, then I get it. But to say that Q never worked for me in a wedding..?🤷🏻‍♂️ These are on opposite spectrum of how they operate in the first place plus MP being a film camera. There just can’t be a comparison. I believe one can do superb shots with a Q in a weddding when applied properly and in certain candid+intimate moments is irreplaceable. Wile MP can be a still an add on service, nothing wrong with that. Just check out what Greg Williams does with his Q and his stunning images.
    My point is it’s sad to see when people don’t know what they’re talking about (on screen/comments), while a camera like Q/MP is just a tool and extremely capable one. If in proper hands, both can deliver amazing results.

    • @teribphotography
      @teribphotography  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey there, thanks so much for taking the time to check this video out and share some of your thoughts. I really do understand your point of view and perhaps I’m to blame for embellishing my thoughts on the Q by saying ‘it never worked for me in a wedding’. It did work, many times. I did a lengthy blog and other video about using it. I was actually inspired by the Greg Williams campaign for the q2 and likened his pre-event celebrity shots to my couples getting ready. The camera does very well in a large variety of settings. You’re also right that the MP is on the opposite spectrum. For me, it’s about the artistry in the work I do. I never felt like an artist using the q2. An experience I am entitled to feel and have. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts! ✨

      @@teribphotography totally understandable. I just felt that the video made an impression of the Q as an iPhone camera alternative. I don’t believe it is. Some people though maybe inclined to dismiss it as a camera choice because they trust you and value your work. I think it could’ve been clarified better and specified that MP inspires you to do more, which is more on a personal/subjective level rather than shortcomings of the Q. And also the M system is obviously more versatile.
      Otherwise, great channel and kudos for sharing your work - also watched your MP developed shots afterwards, good job 👍🏻

    You traded the Q2 in for a film camera! I would never have done that but might well have bought a film camera for occasional leisure use. Certainly not for work and an efficient workflow and low cost of use and reliability of capturing the image. You just never know with a film camera until the film is developed and there is no second chance. One of the gripes often heard from professional photographers these days is that a second memory card is desirable if not essential, along with a second body for security and assurance. Well you throw that concept completely out of the window if you rely on one film camera for paid work. Good luck though but I reckon you will soon be looking at a digital camera to be your main workhorse while perhaps continuing to enjoy your current purchase. Work isn’t really about what you ‘like’. It is about the end result. The consistently good saleable images done efficiently.

Oh by the way, i had to finally send in my M11 in for service just last week. I mainly shoot a 35mm lens and the framelines on the camera froze and so it wont switcht framelines when shooting with a 50 or 28. Also my film counter stopped counting. Cool comment. If you actually watched my videos you would see I do show work and also own most everything I talk about on my channel.

      Haha 😂 what if I’m secretly just trying to get you to join the 🔴 club with each video?!? This camera is the best 35mm I’ve ever used

      @@teribphotography You're twisting my rubber arm! I'm going to upgrade/replace my aging 7Dmk2 this year, and then a Leica is next in my targeting sensors.
