The commentary ought to be different. Had the others made struggle meals too, I don't think she would've critiqued the way she did.
as a single mom, I've lived on rice and beans before. BUT! I always added simple cheap things like onions, green peppers, cheap hot dogs, or just buillion cubes to make it taste as good as I could. And then, I'd switch up the beans-- make red beans n rice, hoppin john, bean curry, etc to keep things a little interesting.
Sounds good to me! I grew up on rice and beans and I would still eat a full plate today 😋 especially seasoned and cooked with love from your mom it’s nothing like it 🫶🏻

@@wastingtime9004 oh I am so sorry you had to endure that. Idk if you have or plan to have a family but I do hope you can turn that around for yourself now(if you haven't already). Food can be so interesting and fun. We didn't have much but food was one of the things we sort of invested in because it meant time together. Ofc back then all the stuff that's popular now (i.e. oxtail, crab, goat and certain cuts of lamb) were less popular and much much cheaper. I realize in hindsight that our diet was heavily influenced by the Caribbean. Lots of Haitian, Jamaican and even Cuban and Dominican dishes. Irish was a fun discovery.

$15 is not a struggle meal. $6 (left in your account until next payday) is a struggle meal. $15 will get you a 4 oz Filet & a baked potato or 1 lobster tail & some pasta 😂
The flavor is fine, but they're usually soggier and add water to the dish I'm cooking and mess up the texture. But I've grown up on them, and still use them from time to time. I actually use them in my shepherd's pie!
Before I saw the rice beans and plantains, that's exactly what I thought of as my budget meal, except it'd be Cuban black beans and lemon butter rice with a sprinkling of ham or bacon, and some salsa and chips along with the plantains. With 15 dollars you can dress up that dish pretty well.
This! That’s what I’m saying! She didn’t even try with the dish! A whole $15 and you didn’t use that to get seasonings? Vegetables? A pack of back? Turkey sausage links? Nothing? 😭
I also think that a good struggle meal or budget meal means buying things that you can use again that week like that bag of rice or potatoes. Mashed potatoes Monday for dinner, roasted potatoes Wednesday morning and again that night etc.

Makeba went way Budget, Queen would have saved more money if she bought a whole chicken instead of the pieces and Kayline could have gotten regular cheese and shredded it herself which would have aloud for at least a can of carnation milk to help the potatoes along and even a stick of butter. This shows me that everyone def sees budgets diff, because I budget food for the month np, this weekly budget thing it isnt for me.
Also if queen would have gotten a whole bell pepper instead of the sliced one! Where I live most shredded cheese is actually cheaper than the whole one tho
@@larissa-eb4vx My thoughts exactly, pre chopped peppers are waaay more expensive than cutting your own, with a few changes her same dish could easily be made for under $10

Just cuz The English don’t season their peas and carrots to your liking, doesn’t mean that Italian, French, Southern, Spanish, German, etc. food is bland. White ppl obviously know how to season girl😂
I have to say that the first dish was actually much more a budget meal imo. They didn't use expensive seasonings(if any), probably the bare minimum amount of cooking oil and included a low cost protein (beans). I thought that they were on point with keeping it low and nutritious regardless if it was lacking flavor. I don't think $15 is a budget meal either. The first meal bought things that'll last a few days versus spending a whole $15 on a singular portion.
If you’re struggling you can eat more beans per price of meat. It’s common sense, the difference is the interpretation of budget meal. 15$ is not a budget meal, that’s just a meal, expensive too if you’re not using ingredients from home, like rice and beans.
$15 doesn't seem like a budget for a single person. I could make a ribeye and baked potato for $15. I also wouldn't count the cost of a whole bag of rice, or beans, just what you used. My budget meal is rice, eggs, breakfast sausage. About $3/person.
@@DeityLover Ribeye is about $25/lb. Go to the butcher counter and ask them for a 4oz cut, it's around $6.50. Have to know how to get what you want and not buy the only thing the store offers. @@kerrina0316 sure but I live outside of LA in SoCal so I don't think their prices are far off from mine. You can straight up get a meal from Panera for under $15 no need to eat rice and beans. You could see their receipts.
I'm not even on a struggle budget and $3-5/ person is about how much I spend everyday. A true struggle meal is eggs and rice for a grand total of $3! Enough to feed 6 people easily.
love the casual classism the contestants show. it truly demonstrates that most people really do not understand what budgeting and poverty is like. that's a daily meal for me! and i love it! because it's better than soggy canned peaches from the food pantry
$15 is lowkey a lot for a budget meal. I would’ve popped over to dollar tree where I would’ve gotten the ingredients to make spaghetti with sausage, mashed potatoes, garlic bread, and asparagus
I loved the first dish!! A struggle meal, truly is just that. A meal with whatever you have left in your cupboards/pantry. It's not meant to be fancy, it's meant to be edible.
Only the first girl made an actual struggle meal. Clownish behavior from the other girls making a big deal about her not using meat. Rice and beans are staples in homes on a budget. I would've added maybe chicken broth, peppers and onions to the beans but there was nothing wrong with her meal.
Makeba talked about sucky plating like girl you had a spoon of rice sprinkled with beans on top with struggle plantains put around it for garnish. Plz! 🤣
If we're talking about a real struggle meal, as in that $15 has to last several days: dried beans, rice, and a ton of seasonings from the pantry. Add some chicken if it's in the budget and/or you already have enough rice and beans at home. My budget meal is chili. Realistically about $10 out of our weekly food budget of $80. Makes 4 portions for my spouse and I, and freezes very well. -$4: one lb. ground beef -$2: two cans beans (kidney + black) -$3: two cans diced tomatoes -$1: tomato paste + Pantry goods: white rice, lots of seasonings, chicken or beef bouillon. Let's be generous and say these take up the remaining $5 for the portions used. Buying the larger packs of beef and weighing them out into freezer bags can bring the cost down even more.
my struggle meal is sopa de frijoles and it’s as cheap as u can possible get. it’s literally just a bean soup and then u add sour cream, tapatio, and limon. it sounds weird but TRUST. if ur on a budget , u love beans/soup… this the one
Lol I would say I tried Shepherd's Pie and it is very good. Good enough that I make it myself now. However, before my 20s I never seen nor heard of it in my home or the black homes around me and the first time I tried it was from a white person lol.
My favorite budget meal is usually a soup, like a nice lentil soup or escarole and bean soup...I can easily make a huge pot for $5 or less and can last days...the brothier the better!
My great grandmother immigrated from Ireland to the US and she made Shepherds pie, quite often and traditionally a Shepards pie is made with ground lamb, ground beef, vegetables including peas, covered in a brown gravy and topped with rich, buttery mashed potatoes however I would love to try this beautiful womans version of Shepard's pie because ground turkey woukd probably be very good and her presentation despite having to spend only 15 dollars, was excellent. It’s probably groceries and take out not that hard to spend that much on food 😭😭😭
Maybe she could eat out once or twice a day in a decent like chilis/Fridays/Applebees type restaurant. 350/7 is $50 a day. You go to chilis/Applebees that’s 20-25 bucks each time. But she could definitely go to the store and get high quality beef, chicken, and fish and some good sides and good deserts for way under $50/day.
its all about how you prioritize! 😂
I used to spend $350 a week during the pandemic shiiiiid. But then again it’s a household of 6 I’m feeding so 😂😂😂😂
$15 for a struggle meal?!?! There’s sooooo much stuff you can make with $15 lmao I’d dream of doing something like this

bruh i can buy a whole week's grocery for $15! if I hit dollar tree, I can get a full loaf of bread, 6 eggs, milk, pasta, beans, rice, pancake mix, oatmeal and sooo much more jeez. I can cook WELL with $15. a budget meals budge should've been 2-5$ maxx smh

They clearly don’t know what a struggle meal is. First girl definitely won in my books. When your struggling you don’t make what you want to eat or what tastes best but what you can afford to keep yourself fed and a roof over your head. She did that.
But it was a budget meal challenge not a struggle meal.

Makeba repeatedly talking about flavor with the other dishes had me weak😭😭 then she said she would switch out the chicken w the yellow rice with BEANS LMAOO
I think she really likes beans😂
🤣 Right! Her meal had no flavor, talking about switching chicken for beans, and why didn't she get asparagus with her extra $6, since she was critiquing so hard 😂😂😂
She made a struggle meal, the other two made a budget meal. ie Makeba acted like she was down to her last $15, while the others acted like they budgeted $15 for a meal. The commentary ought to be different. Had the others made struggle meals too, I don't think she would've critiqued the way she did.

That’s my grocery budget for the month too lol
The person said it’s their weekly budget 🤔
Right? I can't even imagine what she's buying because my partner and I spend about 120-200 per week for the both of us and our 5 pets.
Yea, that’s quite the budget.
That’s more than I spend for my family of five!
Egg fried rice is my favourite budget meal. Only need onion, garlic and eggs. If you feel fancy add a few frozen peas and you have a great meal.
Agree! Sometimes if I feel a little fancy and have some extra $$ I add pineapple and maybe some chicken.

Shepherd's pie being a "white meal' is so new to me 😂😂😂 I'm blackity black black and my mom always made a mean shepherd's pie

Budget meal and struggle meal are two different things.
Lobster tail??
That's probably not real lobster if it's that cheap.
Frozen veggies are life. I don't get it the hate.
The flavor is fine, but they're usually soggier and add water to the dish I'm cooking and mess up the texture. But I've grown up on them, and still use them from time to time. I actually use them in my shepherd's pie!
Exactly! Wayyyyy better than canned
If you like frozen veggies make your own chicken pot pie that’s cheap ❤
But she literally had NO VEGGIES 😂🤣🤣
It’s odd to me when people act like frozen vegetables are just so horrible. It’s how we survive.

Nothing? 😭
Love all 3 of these queens and their different personalities lol
I also think that a good struggle meal or budget meal means buying things that you can use again that week like that bag of rice or potatoes. Mashed potatoes Monday for dinner, roasted potatoes Wednesday morning and again that night etc.

It’s budget meal tho not struggle meal 😭😭
I mean but being able to cook doesn’t mean not having a keeping a budget
I have to say that the first dish was actually much more a budget meal imo. They didn't use expensive seasonings(if any), probably the bare minimum amount of cooking oil and included a low cost protein (beans). I thought that they were on point with keeping it low and nutritious regardless if it was lacking flavor. I don't think $15 is a budget meal either. The first meal bought things that'll last a few days versus spending a whole $15 on a singular portion.

Right 😂😂😂
But again… if you struggling, you’re eating more beans than meat.. j/s…
If you’re struggling you can eat more beans per price of meat. It’s common sense, the difference is the interpretation of budget meal. 15$ is not a budget meal, that’s just a meal, expensive too if you’re not using ingredients from home, like rice and beans.
She may not really eat meat. Garbanzo beans are just protein option

$15 doesn't seem like a budget for a single person. I could make a ribeye and baked potato for $15. I also wouldn't count the cost of a whole bag of rice, or beans, just what you used. My budget meal is rice, eggs, breakfast sausage. About $3/person.
Prices vary upon location. A $15 meal where they are may equal a $5 where you are. Real variables to consider, cost of living etc.
I can't even buy a rib eye without paying less than 15 lol
@@DeityLover Ribeye is about $25/lb. Go to the butcher counter and ask them for a 4oz cut, it's around $6.50. Have to know how to get what you want and not buy the only thing the store offers.
-$4: one lb. ground beef
-$2: two cans beans (kidney + black)
-$3: two cans diced tomatoes
-$1: tomato paste
+ Pantry goods: white rice, lots of seasonings, chicken or beef bouillon. Let's be generous and say these take up the remaining $5 for the portions used. Buying the larger packs of beef and weighing them out into freezer bags can bring the cost down even more.
the rice beans and plantain was a real struggle meal. i’d do white rice and fried egg or yellow rice with salchicha for a struggle meal
