Old pirates, yes, they rob I
Sold I to the merchant ships
    Minutes after they took I
    From the bottomless pit
But my hand was made strong
By the hand of the Almighty
    We forward in this generation
    Triumphantly
    Won't you help to sing
    These songs of freedom?
    'Cause all I ever have
    Redemption songs
    Redemption songs
    Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery
None but ourselves can free our minds
Have no fear for atomic energy
'Cause none of them can stop the time
How long shall they kill our prophets
While we stand aside and look? Ooh
Some say it's just a part of it

Johnny Cash and Joe Strummer needed someone to play guitar for a song, so of course they called up young Tom Morello.

2020 . "Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery. None but ourselves can free our minds" . We are still slaves.
I cried hearing that. There is so much pain in this song. Different pains of three people.
Rest in Peace Johnny, Joe and Bob. Sing for us on the other side of the mirror.

I have the old Cash box set this was on, and it said that Rick Rubin wanted Johnny to correct the English on some lines (I guess like "Old pirates yes they rob I") from Bob's patois, and Johnny wouldn't have it. "That's the way Bob Marley wrote it".

Heard a music guy today who'd worked with Solomon Burke.
As a producer, he wished to autotune Burke's voice.

Or back off the "Hurt" cover despite mad label pressure, or shut up about the horrific treatment of American Indians, especially ones that served in the military and specifically the one that jacked the flag in Okinawa in one of the most iconic images of US mythology ever and despite the very racist country music establishment damn near blackballing him over it which only made him more dedicated to shining a light on it so he started taking out full page ads in papers to bring awareness to it, or his opposition to the Vietnam War though he felt for all the drafted soldiers so he and June went and played for em despite his opposition and refused a lot of the perks offered since he chose to be there but the soldiers didn't and the guerillas didn't choose to fight so he and June shared a bed that was rocked by shelling day and night, the list goes on. He's one of the few famous people that gets better the more ya learn, usually it's the other way around.

"Emancipate yourselves from mental slavory - none but ourselves can free our mind..." - I sometimes wonder whether people would really be able to inheritate this - since, in my perception, it would include a good load of tolerance. And I can't help from felling these days there is a growing lack of the latter - all over the world..
