My wife and I saw Joe play just before he died -- at a casino in Atlantic City. (There's a film of that day showing Joe on the boardwalk approaching passers-by and asking them to come to the show.) The irony of the venue was not lost on Joe; he had a twinkle in his eye the whole evening. Before one of his political numbers, he said, "This next one is a love song." My wife yelled to him, "Sing it to me, Joe." Joe looked at her, smiled, and said, "It doesn't make any sense, but I'll try."
I saw him play after he died and it was revelatory
Joe strummer the future is unwritten is a great film
I caught him in columbus just before he passed. Thankfully!
That's a lovely story mate. I think he was a good bloke with a kind heart, more than just a musician. I remember the day we lost him very clearly and I was gutted. I hope he is in a good place with fiends now. Remembering you Joe.
I wish I could've seen him live. I loved The Clash and I loved him with the Mescaleros...
RIP Joe Strummer
For many of us, Joe was our best friend, even if we never met him.
Very true.
I agree
100% agreement from Tokyo !!
Him and Tim Armstrong are my best friends
The older brother i never had
"And I'll keep listening to the great Joe Strummer 'Cause through music, we can live forever." -Tim Armstrong. R.I.P
And I know
I'm indestructible
2:03 Big Tim looking good.
This is one of my favorite cover songs of all time, and a main reason why is that he sings in his own accent, instead of trying to imitate Bob Marley’s Jamaican accent. It makes the song his own without disrespecting the original. It also helps that, while he makes other changes of his own (adding to the instrumental, lowering it by a major 6th to match his vocal range), he also keeps the lyrics pretty much the same, keeps the same tempo, and still bases it around guitar. Just a wonderful balance of respect to the original and innovation.
I think of Strummer sometimes as a moral guide. Not a perfect man, I know, but someone who strove for better things for himself and humanity. We often look for inspiration in religion or the words of philosophers, but there can be wisdom even in the words of a child. I think Joe knew this. Thanks Joe, we're trying out here...
You summed what i think about Joe,his was so determinate and courageous and really it make us question everything now,Joe we miss you and will never forget you, rest easy!!
Agree 100% !!!!
F
Well said.

A plaza named by Joe Strummer, in honour of him, was inaugurated in the Spainish city Granada last week, hope you people who love Joe come and visit this plaza.

2024
I love you Joe, for now and always, thx for bringing that sunshine in all my heart. Watch on us with all your kindness and humanity, we desperately need it.
I was ten when Joe died. Nearly nine years later now and it feels like he's standing beside me pushing me along. The charity 'Strummerville' that was set up in his name have helped me and many other young musicians to get out there and play our music. Thanks to Joe I was able to record an album, so thank you man. Even after death you haven't given up on people. Thank you.
I'm still sad about it, tbh... a great talent stolen away by a heart defect... it's so rough.
I was 16 when he died, and even at that point he was incredibly special to me. Still miss him to this day. Wish he was still around now to help us all out in these crazy times
"Without people, you're nothing"
Gone but NEVER forgotten, RIP Joe Strummer
THE FUTURE IS UNWRITTEN
20 years today.
THE ONLY ONE THAT MATTERS
Thank you Joe!
All these years later I still can't listen to this without crying. Another great one gone too soon. RIP Joe Strummer
Joe Strummer has gained the highest level of admiration from me. He was a great human being and a great musician. We don't get people like him too often. R.I.P. Joe Strummer. The king is gone, but he's not forgotten.
Joe and his music inspired me as I was a teenage rebel girl, it shaped me and helped me with anger and dissapointmet of surrounding reality. Always in my mind and heart. Thank you my hero.
i'm right there with you. those handful of guys saved my life so many years after the shows were over. every day, i remember that.
Joe had a heart of gold
an eternal rebel....
Joe Strummer is my hero. I am 17, i never heard his music in his lifetime but now I have, he means everything to me. He showed me why it's important to make music that's more than pretty. It has to mean something to someone, it has to take you somewhere. He taught me that there is no bad form of music. He taught me that the world is a big place and it moves fast so you have to experience as much of it as possible otherwise you waste your life.
Joe, thank you for everything. You are missed.
R.I.P Bob marley,johnny cash,Joe Strummer
jim morrison lou reed jimmy hendrix.......but the musick lives forever
John Lennon pure (too)
Strummer, and all The Clash will be ever one of the most influential bands of all the history. We have a debt of gratitude with the music of The Clash. We'll never forget their music and their authentic attitude. Thanks for all this moments.
20 years on today. Thank you for changing my life Joe.
RIP: Joe Strummer (21 August 1952 - 22 December 2002)

His voice cracks before he starts singing. Because it was from the heart

It makes me cry, too. RIP Joe. He is in Heaven playing in that all - star band. 😢🙏
Joe still lives and sings and loves everyone. Thank you Joe.
Even if I never knew you, I consider you as one of my dearest friends. Miss you Joe!
On my darkest days, playing this lightens things up a little. Even on my brightest days, this song makes life a little brighter. The future is unwritten. Write your own happy ending.
You're totally right. I'm now in my darkest years since 2020, Hope you are fine now. Everything passes, and music is a parte of the cure

Beautiful. Always loved, never forgotten :,(
The world could really use Joe's optimistic wisdom and voice right about now!
12 years. This country needs you more than ever! RIP
I think this song sings to the soul of humanity and that's what we all need more of
Never saw the clash, but I got to see Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros at the Newport music hall one day. This was a very life-changing event, highly memorable.
I saw The Clash in Atlanta in '82. I hate that I never got to see him with The Mescaleros. My friends, Southern Culture on the Skids, played a show with them, and their bass player Mary has a picture of her with Joe.
May God rest his mighty soul. Let us all stand with him and Bob Marley.
2024. Keep playing it so the kids will know. ❤
Joe had the ability to change the way people thought about the world. It's amazing that one man could do so much for so many - it's a shame he only had 50 years here. Even 8 years gone, he's still changing lives one by one as new generations discover the Clash. Legend.
I love Joe Strumer I have ever heard a more beautiful song. I don't know why it makes me cry each time. There's so much heart and soul in his singing. I miss him. Thanks Joe, with love ❤️ RIHP
Here again in 2024, was blessed in 2012 to travel to NYC to see this mural in person. RIP Joe. Wish I had stayed around in 2003-4 to see yall at Hootenanny in Irvine,CA
“Without people you’re nothing.”
Without my beautiful wife and daughter I am nothing.
Thanks Joe, I needed that today. RIP
I miss Joe Strummer, Joe will remain alive in my heart and in the hearts of the fans. When I hear Joe's voice I cry and I think Joe deserves these tears
Joe will always live on, he changed lives. RIP
Come back among us, Joe. These times need you so much...
11 years today, RIP Joe...
Stanley Blundell 16 now damn
il never forget when i went to NYC for a Model UN simulation in university. we only had two days out of the week to walk around the city while everyone else went to ESB and Brooklyn Bridge I went to see Joe Strummer. As I stepped out of the cab and I locked eyes with the memorial I broke down in tears. this man who i never met a man who I had I only discovered his music 4 years after his death, and i was on my knees bawling my eyes out. thats the power you had joe. rip
I think his little speech before the song gives me as much chills as this song does. Beautiful song, amazing singer, perfect punk-rocker. I miss Joe. He changed my life and everything. "We're nothing without people." We need you in this world Joe, people are losing their ideology and faith. Come back please?
The brilliant Joe Strummer with the best cover of Marley's superb choon. Awesome song & singer.
If I could only see one video from youtube for the rest of my life, this would be the one. I can only actually name a few people in the video, but many of the faces are very familiar to me. I used to walk down that block between Niagara and Vasak's Horseshoe all the time. That little corner of the east village was like a religious shrine for me before the artwork went up. Now the icing is on the cake. I miss that neighborhood. I miss those people. And of course I miss John (Joe). The world is poorer for his passing. I'll remember him as one of the finest philosophers of my lifetime. It's ironic that he has said he hated music. ...but it was the tool that he used to have his messages heard. He was one of the most positively influential people I have ever encountered. ...and he was a fine musician.
Joe nailed this song in his own unique style and just proved yet again what a talent this guy was,is and always will be!
I bet heaven has never been the same since Joe went up there!lol
Miss u Joe
When ever we feel like the forces of greed and corruption are grinding us down, there is Joe Srummer to lift us up with songs of freedom. The world is missing one of its prophets. Love you Joe!
Watching this makes me choke up. Every single time. Rest In Peace Joe. You were a helluva man.
Probably the best concert I saw the Clash in 81' PHX!
watch out NYC with this feel like Joe Strummer is still around..brings me to tears as always..Joe is brilliant mate and a real brother.."The Future is Unwritten"!!!
16 Years gone today , Thank you for everything Joe
This materialistic world needs a Joe Strummer. We need him, now more than ever.
I cry when watching this video.
I can't believe he's dead.
Joe and the Clash blew me away in Phoenix in 83' playing close to a 3 hr concert! ❤
Immortal Joe Strummer
One of the most original musicians ever... The Clash are forever in my heart.
This is a beautiful eulogy for Joe, he and his friends changed music and our lives forever. Wherever he is now, I hope he is with friends and at peace. ❤
Marley and Strummer were one and the same just a couple of musicians whose passion for all they believed in made me sit up and listen.
11 years later and still one of the greatest video tributes ever put together

Everyone raise a toast to St. Joe Strummer.
We must love Joe in the way he was, in the way he saw our world, in the way he wanted it to be. He just wanted us to be free to see it, to understand it and to criticize it in the best way.
R.I.P. Joe, and bless him.
Greetings!
"Raise a toast to saint Joe Strummer,
I think he might have been our only decent teacher".

I was at the Joe Strummer memorial mural in the East Village, two days ago. A mys tical moment ... Maximum respect to somebody who maintained continuity, consistency, dignity and humanity till the very end. He is sorely missed !
Miss you everday Joe! You are never forgotten.
I lived across the street when they were painting this mural in the East Village.
a way of life and not just a band...
After sooo many years....Joe we need you now more than ever, I hear this every time and cry, your a flame that will never burn out, more inspirational as a songwriter than most now, I loved the clash, and his spirit lives on
Well I’m a 17 year old boy and I discovered The Clash this year I listen to their tracks everyday and think why does such a big part off other teens to pop? This is what music is al about, making a difference, inspire people, show them their not alone if they feel lonely, guilty, sad or mad in and about the world and their leaders, being an example for others who could change the world to in their way... trust me I might not have known Joe Strummer as much as a lot of you guys, but he lives on also in the heart of a lot of younger people. Joe is one off my many examples and he’ll be 4ever certainly in the days when fear and anger rule a huge part of this planet.
Joe is still so deeply missed... even more in these difficult times. The future is unwritten.
joe still lives
This clip is so full of emotion, guys, I am crying...
In the lecture hall in Healey Library @ UMass Boston, someone carved "Joe Strummer 1952-2002" on the back of one of the seats.
Rest easy, Joe; your memory lives on.
Miss you every day, Mr. Strummer.
I love this version. R.I.P. Joe Strummer.
