I used to be married to a Muslim man and was exposed to that community. Every time I asked (men or women) why the women have to be wearing scarves I got the same answer - For protection. 'Protection from what?', I asked, 'Sun, wind, cold?' No! It is for protection from lustful men! I say:'You have a big problem!'

Yeah, she will literally NEVER admit the hijab is wrong, even if it is proven beyond all doubts, and here's why: she feels personally assaulted by the accusation that hijab is sexist. So, if that is correct, the hijabi girls have 1 of two choices: be honest, but feel like a hypocritical fool, or double down on the indefensible so she doesn't have to feel foolish, even though everyone else sees her as a bigger fool.

Stupid, emotionally driven defender of clothing that symbolizes the subjugation of women. It's sad, yes. But anymore I'm angry when I see the pro-Islamist propaganda coming from young women who live in countries that give her the choice to practice the religion she chooses and to wear what she chooses, while all over the world, other Muslim women are not so lucky and have no choice whatsoever. Which brings me back to my earlier point:
"Why stop at the hijab or burka? Then the men won't see the woman, why not also have them wear permanent gags so their sexy voices can't incite sexual assault? Why not force them to wear metal chastity belts so that they can't be guilty of being raped (how does that logic work anyway)? Why not banish women to a separate females-only part of the country behind massive walls, where men cannot ever enter, except for a sex room to breed with their wives - heck, don't even do that - no contact ever, use artificial insemination, then the men will never see, hear, touch or have anything to do with those women they hate, so they will never be tempted. Problem solved right? All Muslim males happy now?"

Well.... don't forget that behind the Iranian Revolution was coalition of anti Shah forces. Marxists were important part of the coalition. In addition Western Leftists were very sympathetic toward Khomenei when he was forced to move to France Leftist media provided for him very enthusiastic coverage. BBC immediately put Khomeini into the spotlight. He rapidly became a household name in the west, portraying himself as an "Eastern mystic" who did not seek power, but instead sought to "free" his people from "oppression". The normally critical western media rapidly became a docile tool in Khomeini's hands.

This is frustrating to watch, as the young Muslim girl, obviously living in some western country seems completely oblivious to the fact that her own personal interpretation of Islam has little in common with the practices and teachings of "mainstream" Islam in most non-western countries. Not acknowledging this and / or claiming that "Islam is the most feminist religion" is definitely not the path to resolving this problem.

    • @brokenSnake

Aramis7 I guess it's because you can't swallow the fact that Islam is indeed a religion that gives women more freedom and rights than any other religion. And what exactly are the practices and teachings of mainstream Islam? You seem to be an expert on this topic

One can claim they wear the hijab willingly, but if you fear being treated negatively/harshly by family, community, or in the afterlife for not wearing it, as indicated in the Quran, then you're being forced to wear it.

    • @rachybaby72
      @rachybaby72 7 ปีที่แล้ว +18

HarleyDrummer1 Exactly. And you may just be one of those (few) old school Muslim women who sincerely choose to wear the hijab. But the litmus test for choice is if you would also have that same choice *not* to wear it. And they don't. Not if, at best, they want to be ostracized; or, at worst, want to be killed.

    • @ahmadalshehabi1138

See that's the problem. Even when a Muslim woman says that she chose to wear the hijab. Someone like you goes back to this conversation that hijabs are ultimately forced to wear the hijab somehow. How hard is it for you to believe that simply put, a woman wants to wear an article of religious clothing fully out of her own well. Why do you have to assume that she has a family that would treat her badly or that she believes that she must wear it or else she goes to hell?

A few decades before her time, a certain other promoter of repressive-ideology-posing-as-liberation would have referred to them as useful idiots.
*a pox on every American or European fashion house that pushes this...I guarantee you any Muslim woman has access to plenty of resources to purchase hijab and anything else she needs - on-line, locally or overseas via friends/relatives and merchants (run the search "buy Pakistani hijab" for example on Google and the result yields 18 hits on page 1 alone with 7+ pages of offers).

Well said, Madame! See how important education is? It allows you to reason and see the truth. That is what worries me about Islam. They are trying to out breed all other societies, but they want to populate every country with ignorant, uneducated people, who are easily led. They don't want people to think for themselves so they have lots of children, whom they refuse to let be exposed to science and rational thought. Mind you, even education is no help when you are brainwashed. Mehdi Hasan is supposed to be an Oxford University fellow and he still believes that their prophet flew to heaven on a winged horse. Although, maybe he just said that, because he was scared of being slaughtered by some crazy fundamentalist from his own faith. Then, again, that so-called Oxford fellow praises that evil woman, Linda Sarsour, so I guess education is no guarantee of an open mind. some people use hijab to oppress women, but the sole purpose of the hijab is a religious clothing garment. people can misuse objects, but why does that give you the right to re-name it and change its meaning? knives are used as tools everywhere and they are very beneficial and useful, they help us do things, but some people use knives to kill and as tools of oppression. How many people have been killed with knives throughout time, Isis has used knives to behead people, so (according to the flawed logic) that mean knives are symbols of death and oppression and we should all stop using it. in some places today, and lots of times in the past, houses were used to oppress women, forcing them to stay at home, work in the kitchen e.t.c, so since houses can symbolize oppression, forget the other good uses for houses, they symbolize this therefore women should never use them, and purchase them, and choose to live in them because they were used to oppress other women, and symbolized oppression in those individual situations. Moral of the story: anything can be used to oppress, they can be objects of oppression in certain circumstances but why does that overtake the identity and purpose of the object itself . everybody has their own individual perspective on things, what might be oppressive to you might not be oppressive to me because i choose it and its useful in my situation, so don't oppress me with your opinions :) and stop using this flawed logic to tear down hijab.

Right there, your alarm bells should be going off: you don't work for CAIR , esp. in so public a position as communications head (and in CHI no less) without being very up on the issues. I agree that she came across in this panel as emotional and inarticulate, but that in no way demonstrates a failure to grasp the underlying issues or their significance. Never - esp. concerning this subject - judge by surface signs.

She's talking about the women who DON'T have the choice. It's really nice when you have a choice as to what you wear, but when it's law, and when it's for their safety, it's not a choice. Not Islam.
    Not their leadership.
    Not themselves.
THEY BLAME THE COUNTRIES THEY ARE HAPPY IN!
AND THEN; They want to change those countries to be like.
THE COUNTRY THEY CAME FROM WHERE THEY WERE UNHAPPY

A religion that depends on clothing is a ''textile'' religion. A Sufi Shaik said: I didn't come to this world to care about dressing, my duty is about spirituality.

The last girl asking a question, and "feeling patronised", yes, I can super relate to the sentiment of feeling patronised when dealing with Muslims, and they give MY change back to my male companion for example, or when I am travelling in Iran and am forced to wear a hijab even though it is hot and uncomfortable, or I am not allowed to enter a cafe there. No wonder she has such a keen sense of, and is so adept in spotting when she is being patronised, I can fully sympathise :)

Who organised this debate? I really wanted to hear from somebody who could really articulate her case but not this young woman. She seem to have no clue about facts of the world today. She should consider herself fortunate to be able to choose between wearing hijab and not wearing hijab. Millions of muslims around the world don't have that choice; they just have to wear them. She should not have been part of this discussion because she appears too naive and clueless. America imperialism??? Strange. People like her would be the first to scream their American citizenship. I have no problem if someone wants to defend her culture but here is someone who thinks every point made by the other is about her.

I take it that Asra still considers herself a Muslim? I agreed with her points about the hijab, but I fail to understand why she doesn't just leave the religion. Is it out of fear of being killed for apostasy?

+Mark Evans Maybe she has a faith in a creator & Islam is the medium she expresses that faith. I'm guessing her focus would be more on the Quran of Mecca (peaceful) rather than the Quran of Medina (Jihad).

You could ask the same thing about Maajid Nawaz. Why try to reform Islam, instead of just leaving it? Personally, I'm an atheist and I would generally prefer that anyone just left the nonsense of religion behind. However, when I look at the world around me, I have to admit that Islam does need reformation. And who would carry it out, if not people who think like them and _still_ identify as believers? So, in the end, I think that we need more Muslims of their kind. Fighting to reform Islam, in the context we live today, is a honorable cause in my book. I completely understand why some people would choose to follow this path, and they have my sympathy and my support - even though I don't share their (or any other) faith.

Agreed, they need much more internal pressure to change. They've been given a free ride and let their hate filled ideology spread in the form of radical terrorism like a cancer. While I don't understand why any woman would remain a muslim, they absolutely need thought leaders like this lady to lead a major reformation.

Maybe I've not read enough about Islam, but it seems to me to be unreformable. Because it's held out to be a perfect recitation of the word of God (through the Angel Gabriel to Mohammed) and is claimed to be perfect, how could it ever be in need of reform. I believe that is likely the thinking of a majority of Muslims, so a Reformation in the fashion of a Christian Reformation seems unlikely. Add to that all of the other texts which make up the core of the various Muslim sects, and the brutal way Mohammed tells Muslims to deal with disbelievers and it seems doubly doubtful that a softening of Islam is possible.

I definitely think threatened to be murdered if you leave a religion would apply pressure to stay. Ayaan Hirsi Ali has turned towards reformation and is constantly told since she's no longer Muslim, she no longer has any right to call for changes to a religion she no longer belongs to.
