  • A very special narrowboat vlog today featuring an epic adventure and a thrilling rescue (though not necessarily in that order…). It’s about perseverance, how miracles happen and what happens when you yeet something quite irreplaceable into the canal. Join us for what is arguably an insane rescue mission and a huge feat of over-engineering. Hope you enjoy it and Cap-e Diem (seize the cap).
    ⚠️ Watch until the end for an uncut replay of the grabber’s best bit (Andrew's Version).

    I know every video these days says "watch until the end”, but with this one, I really don’t think you’ll be disappointed if you do. I’ve had the final clip with the dramatic music added on my phone for months and I honestly haven’t gotten tired of watching it on loop yet.

    A vlog or a short documentary film for festivals? The drama, the humour, the ingenuity, the musical score, the jeopardy, the grabber's shocked face and bodybuilder's arms, the impostor cap, the tenacity, the cinematography of that last grab and the tonal colour changes as THE cap rises to the surface... eventual triumph! Award-winning, surely? 🙌 I enjoyed that. 😄

    Great video! I am from Finland and we have a word for your efforts: SISU. It cannot be translated but according to wikipedia: "Sisu is extraordinary determination in the face of extreme adversity, and courage that is presented typically in situations where success is unlikely. It expresses itself in taking action against the odds, and displaying courage and resoluteness in the face of adversity; in other words, deciding on a course of action, and then adhering to it even if repeated failures ensue."

    Any tech friends?
    Maybe have a few spares 3D printed just in case this happens again (touch wood).
    Or, you could possibly make a “natural” one out of cork.
    Have it attached to the boat in some sort of way or at the very least attach one of those yellow key ring floats to it - that way you can watch it floating away 🙂
    P.s or get a strong neodymium magnet and attach it to the cap, just to make it a little easier if it ever decides to go deep sea diving again.
    The grabber video reminds me of those underwater deep sea missions. When they collect samples from the sea bed.
    A Jaques Cousteau voice over could have been very funny. 😂❤

    • @krisatomic
      @krisatomic  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Great idea about 3d printing one actually! Is there some way to scan it in or something, will have to look into that! We’d actually love a 3d printer but no space on the boat 😅

    i have two grabbers one for me and the other for wife. what i did to be able to pick up round and thin things was to cut a 'V' about 1/4" from the end tip and most of the way through the pad. but make sure you have a hard backing behind the soft palm grabbers tip before you cut the 'V'. i tried this out i used my wife's first it worked and we could pick up some large coins (thick edge), bottle caps, jar lids. this will not ruin the grabber. thank you for taking me on your adventure and how far you would travel just to find a Pub for a beer. i'm an old codger and several miles to get to a "Pub" or "Beer house". At my age that is too far to walk and way to hot (40+ C or 95 to 100+ F). Funny to see Kris's face when the Rose Inn was closed. So So Sad 😄 I know the feeling!

    Upon its release in the Criterion Collection sometime in the 2030s, the back of the case will cite influences like Wes Anderson's whimsy, James Cameron's underwater cinematography, the Blair Witch Project's gonzo filmmaking (particularly with the grabber lit shots), and not one but two Hans Zimmer-esque needle drops. The first being seen in the theatrical release and akin to Cameron Diaz running through the snow into Jude Law's arms, and the second in the Kendall-cut leaning more towards the trailer for Man of Steel.

    I really felt your pain. When we had not long had our boat last year, a freak of events saw our pump out cap end up in the river trent. Again magnet did not work and we had no net or camera etc. The chandlery at our marina only had the full housing for sale, no spare caps and it was late on a Sunday afternoon. We had no idea if a vaccuum toilet could function without a cap on the tank and we didn't want to risk splashback so a costly £50 mistake for us - but at least the standard cap fitted our boat. I loved watching this video so much, the perseverance and igenuity.

    @pilpelet100 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Wow! I'm so happy that you were able to get it back. Here's a thought for the people who manufacture these water caps - make them with some sort of loose chain to link them with the water filler neck. That way they'll always be attached. Mind you, if that system had applied to your water cap, there wouldn't have been a video! 🤣🤣

    • @krisatomic
      @krisatomic  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They do have chains! Ours was never chained in as the screw for it was snapped off, we’ve not been able to get it out but we’re trying! 🙌

    Burrr - Brings back bad memories ! The (specially turned/milled - "one of a kind" ) Tiller brass fell of my boat (whilst underway) - I spent almost an hour up to my chest , in my underpants, walking around in freezing canal water (& deep silt ) , I eventually gave up ... and stepped on it walking back to the narrowboat .. sometimes you just have to bite the bullet & get in :-)

    we know your pain. We do NOT have a boat, but a 40' fifth wheel that we tow with and hdt. Truck holds 200+ gallons of diesel. One time we went to fill up and grandson forgot to put cap back on. Didn't find out till we got home. Regular replacement caps were around 40-50 usd. and I got a wild hair and said has to have a safety chain. We got new ones, both tanks, cost us $45 each. The reason I am commenting is when you showed your cap, I saw a nut or something on the inside. I would suggest a piece of stainless chain and a piece of stainless bar. Stainless so won't mess with your water. just slip the bar down until it grabs inside of tank, then you will never loose it again cause the bar and chain will keep it from going anywhere. and by the way, I lost a boat fuel cap once, duck taped my grans strainer to a boat hook and finally got it..got my butt reamed too, for dirtying her strainer.

    When you stop for a moment to think about it, it's not very surprising that someone else dropped their cap in the exact same spot - your boat is a popular length so there are many that would have the inlet in the same spot when moored there.
    You have a very nice storytelling style.

    • @krisatomic
      @krisatomic  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Totally, there are probably loads more down there! We did also talk about rocking up to some other water points and going fishing to see if we could find a matching cap by chance 😂 that was plan c!

    • @YaaLFH
      @YaaLFH ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@krisatomic Haha, you should totally do it next time you're filling up and see how many you find!
      My experience with boats taught me to always have those fiddly bits attached. Can't really go diving for stuff in the middle of a lake or sea 🤣 good thing the canals are shallow.

    • @stevenrix7024
      @stevenrix7024 ปีที่แล้ว

      Such a daft place to put the water inlet, totally asking for the cap to fall in! Now I know why hire boats tend to have two side compartments at the front, one of which contains the water inlet. You just drop the cap down in the compartment (anywhere) and it has no chance of escaping!

    • @YaaLFH
      @YaaLFH ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stevenrix7024 Daft? That's where the water tank is, right below the well deck.

    • @stevenrix7024
      @stevenrix7024 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@YaaLFH Sure, the tank is down there. But the hole that you pour water down, to fill the tank, doesn’t have to be mere inches from the edge of the boat!

    The first thing about her learns always put the water cap in your pocket or your fuel cap or are you clean out app now some people get caps that are attached with heavy duty attachment to the boat so it can't go overboard. Also very important your keys put your keys with a float if you don't we will find one day you'll have your keys in your hand and oops right in the drink and if you just put the float on your keys you have been able to get your keys it happens to every Booter not just Canal boats every motor in the world has had this problem the other thing you want to get it's a dehumidifier it's called a golden rod and if you put two or three in your boat what it'll do is he'll set up a just warmth in like closets and closed areas I don't keep mold from farming they're really good that's one of the other things about having a boat

      Thanks so much for the feedback Shoan! I’ll work on getting the built in TH-cam subtitles correct asap tomorrow, those should be adjustable for size which may be more suitable? I don’t like to rely on captions this much, it was really due to the wind, but I’ll do better in future to make the text accessible.

      Just to update, I've added the standard TH-cam CC which you can customise in the settings (the cog icon). I'll try to improve the readability of the on-screen text for future videos also. Thanks for flagging it!

      No, but I agree it makes sense! Ours did have a chain originally which had snapped off at some point before we got it, so it’s probably something we could get replaced at some point but we’ve naturally just been a million times more careful with it since this debacle so it’s been fine haha
