I am learning soooo much about yarn and what it takes to spin yarn! I am even more appreciative of woolly fibers because of the love that is put into creating yarns. Thanks for the enlightenment!
Thank you so much for sharing the Blue Ridge Bear Paw hat! It was so great to meet you at Rhinebeck, and I appreciate your help getting the word out to support our WNC fiber folks 💕💕
I enjoy your podcasts so much! Additionally, wanted to share that my "ChiaoGoo" Twist interchangeable needles come with a tightening tool that fits into small holes to help stabilize half of the needle so it can be adequately tightened. :)
I bought my first yarn from your booth at Rhinebeck this year and am excited to discover you also have a podcast! The orange hunting hats match the pumpkin costumes perfectly 🎃
Peg, glad you are a “little” better, still a way to go and you are a trooper for going to festivals anyway, even with head sign - Amanda did a great job filming - you two are a team!!!
Peg your sweater is EXACTLY what I want to wear. It's perfection with that icord edging and deep v-neck. So good. See you Sunday at the fest! Wayne and I are comin!
Broccoli elastic as a rubber gripper around the needle, while holding the cord steady with the t-pin. A good twist and my chiaogoo never come apart. Don't give up on them yet! Also, for magic loop, I find there is a magic length: too long and the floppy loops are cumbersome - too short and there is tension on the knitting. For me 30" total is juuuust right.
First just want to say Peggy's cardi is gorgeous! Second, I am glad she is getting her voice back. Loved the Rhinebeck vids and am so happy to have found you!
I gave up on interchangeable needles for exactly the reason you mention. Even using the t-pin to tighten still results in them loosening up. Drives me nuts. So I use fixed circulars almost always. Peg, feel better soon! Every time I see that sweater I think : I Have to knit it! And I purchased the hat pattern that is supporting Ashville fiber folks.
Interested in what you said about the Cormo that needed more washing. I remember talking to some fiber gurus about challenges cleaning some of the finewools (and some of the dense stapled finer medium wools) that have a sort of sticky feel when they are raw. They talked about how important it is to soak them in just room temp water for up to a couple of hours or more to dissolve the potassium salts in them before putting them through your usual hot water scour process. They also said that if you don't do it first, it can be nearly impossible to get that stickiness out of the wool (even after it's washed). Just passing that along! Keep up the great work!
And this is why all of my Chiaogoo needles are fixed circulars. Except I do have the Forte needles which have the Swiv360 cords instead of the red lace ones. I find that for me, they come undone a lot less often. But in general, interchangeable needles drive me BATS and I mostly only buy fixed circulars now. The Chiaogoos are relatively inexpensive, too, so i just keep buying what I need so I don’t have to steal from other projects.
I'm glad you're feeling better Peggy -- what a busy time for you all. I am SOOOO excited for my Solstice Box -- so much fun and I do love mini skeins (hint hint for future bundles)🥰
I just got some new knitting needles to do the magic loop for my Mussleburg hats. I bought it from Jimmy Bean Wool but they are by knitters pride and they have one inch measurements across the length of the needles. I can't wait to try them. I show them on my last podcast. OK that proposal was awesome, how special not only for her but your mill too.
Another great episode--thanks! I hope that you're both back to full fighting trim soon and that Peg and Liz have a great festival this weekend. Wish I were going to New England, but it's quite a hike from the DC area. Re. interchangeables: I've just accepted that I'll periodically have to rescue my stitches from the ditch as the needle starts to twist off. I must have a very, um, vigorous knitting motion.
Try Addi Click needles...German made interchangeable needles that click and really lock into place. I have never had them come apart while knitting like with other " screw top" interchangeable.s Not inexpensive but for me they have been a great investment and mine are over 10 years old. Great episode, love that the Mill was the setting for an engagement !
Greetings Ladies! I just recently discovered your channel and I am so enjoying getting to know you both and all about the Mill and your yarns. I'm a new/novice knitter and I'm working on my first Musselburgh (I purchased Ysolda's pattern) - I am using Fingering Weight Yarn and size 2/32" circulars - I have just finished the crown and was wondering if I should switch to 16" to do the tube? Also, Amanda what size needles were you using and what yarn weights do you ladies think work best? Looking forward to continuing catching up with past Mill-Casts. thanks!
Just another suggestion for the Chiaogoo interchangeables along with the t pin tool you need to use the rubber gripper to help tighten. I use these needles all the time and they never come apart as long as I use that gripper. Peg is will see you on Sat.
I love my Addi Click interchangeable needles. Once you’re sure they’re clicked in place you won’t have to worry about them coming apart. They come with cord options some of which are long enough for magic loop.
I can appreciate the difficulty of getting your wool clean for spinning! I have CVM sheep that are so sticky and difficult to get absolutely clean! Any soap/detergent wash advise would be appreciated be appreciated! Love your pod cast!!
The solstice box is so intriguing, maybe next year (I spent a lot at Rhinebeck). I wanted to mention Hiya Hiya needles when you were talking about needles staying together. I’ve never had mine come apart. Thanks for the pattern recommendations. They are both beautiful, and the quilting designs are right up my alley.
Amanda, I am curious about the amount of yarn you used for your Hunting Season Musselborough Hat. Was it more than one skein? I have made a one skein Hunting Season hat using the Morning Walk pattern and I have made many Musselborough hats using a single skein of fingering yarn, but I was worried that one skein wouldn't be enough to make the Musselborough. Thanks!
Peg, LOVE your Smoked Orange sweater! What yarn did you use? It looks like it would take forever to knit but is so beautiful that I’m tempted. FYI - Addi makes their “Click” interchangeable needles that do lock into place without a tightening tool, but I don’t like the join. It’s not as smooth as the ChiaoGoo Interchangeable needles. Hope you have a great time at the New England Fiber Festival and wish I lived close enough to attend!
Hi! I love the millcasts! Amanda what yarn are you using for your Musselburgh? I want to knit a hunting season hat for my husband and have been looking for the right blaze orange yarn! Yours seems perfect!!! Thank you ❤
oh the Proposal! Brilliant!!
What a great proposal! Such a great story! Thanks for sharing.

Jacque recommended your podcast so I clicked over. What a delightful episode.
Thanks so much!

@@Meredith36 Thanks so much!
Thanks Peggy and Amanda. I love doing Magic Loop. You do need a long cable. How special that proposal was! Congratulations to the couple!
Thank you! It was really great to be part of their special day!
Lovely mill cast as usual . Thank you ladies.

It was so fun!🩷
Thank you! I owe a big thanks to everyone at the mill.
Just ordered the Solstice Box! I was looking for something for the upcoming season. This will be fun!
Hope you love it!

Peggy, your red sweater is a triumph! It fits beautifully and is just gorgeous. Sweet costumes, Amanda! I love your values.

I always tighten my Chiaogoo using rubber bands to twist them tightly. The thick ones that come on broccoli work well!
🤣Broccoli bands! Will try them- what a good idea!

If you're having an issue with your needles staying on the cable I tighten mine with a rubber jar opener and they stay on wonderfully!
👍
Chicago makes a small heart shaped rubber gripper to use for tightening needles.
👍
Had same problem with interchangeable needles coming apart. The fix-use aa gripper(pad to open jars) aand tighten. No more needless coming undone
Great idea!
The orange hat is called a tuke french fur trappers wore these double hats to keep warm.
It is warm! 😊
