A great kit for 50 years of age. The 1/48 Frank came out at the same time and is just as good.

Right on Alan! I have reviewed the Frank as well on the channel - nice kit. I was surprised that the Frank had good decals while this kit did not.

Tamiya's 1973 tool Jack is a straighforward good fitting build out of the box, and the price! Yes please. Hasegawa if a little more detail is required and you want an open cockpit, but no pilot figures with Hasegawa 1/48 kits. = [
Been building plastic for > 60 years now, and I've gone back to the future with KISS please & strictly OOTB for 80% of my builds. I build predominantly WW I & WWII aircraft and armour, and air overwhelmingly in 1/48 and 1/32 scales. Tamiya's 1/48 J2M3 Type 21 had sufficient detail for me as did their venerable Ki-84-1, A6M2 Type 0 Model 21 & A6M3 Type 0 Model 32 to not build them again in Hasegawa -yet although I have many of Hasegawa's 1/48 kits.
That said, I just bought Hasegawa's relatively recent tool 1/32 J2M3 Type 21 Jack" which I plan on building early in the new year. A retired ex mil and airline pilot, I build to enjoy the process and please myself with suspension of disbelief, not impress rivet counting internet 'experten'.

This was my first try 1/48 scale. Really enjoyed the build and the price was also very good. But i had vig problems with the decals. Very thick and translucent.

Yes. The decals are the real failing of this kit. That's why I replaced the national insignia with aftermarket decals. I have traditionally had lots of issues with Tamiya decals.

Use Tamiya's Mark Fit or Mark Fit Strong (new). It's more aggressive than Micro Set & Sol.

Great review thanx. Have this kit on my shelf it was fun to build. Only drawback are rised panel lines but otherwise it have a very good fit as You mentioned. Cheers from Sweden.

Would have liked to see and hear one fly....the real plane at POF MUSEUM in Chino California is the most beautiful and nice one I have seen in person...love the kit and have it by all brands in 1/48 scale....

Right on! I've seen the Zero fly, but I would love to see the J2M3 flying as well. It almost has a racer look to it.

The Raider at Chino POF is the only one you will ever see. There are none left.

Great build out, I always enjoy your camo schemes and finish. The yellow is spectacular - I think The most difficult color to work with. Working my way back into the modeling world, I couldn't agree more, these kits make great builds. I did scare myself really big time recently. I have been building up future projects while getting up to speed. I order the limited edition Eduards BF 109 series 1/72 scale. I just about fainted on the detailing, they even include metal etch parts which I think only a Neuro surgeon could work with. It is definitely a Ph . d level build, Some of these limited edition kits sell out so I save my beer money and buy a few when I can. Once again, this build out is exactly the level I'm trying to reach . Nice looking aircraft kind of looks like a stubby version of P- 47.

Right on, thank you! The key to yellow is a white base coat that is sanded smooth. The Eduard kits are breathtaking. I would recommend building a weekend edition Eduard kit of the same aircraft. They have great detail but aren't as daunting for a newer modeler. But, stick to the blue box weekend kits. The early yellow box weekend kits didn't come with complete decals. And Raiden means Thunderbolt in Japanese.

    That’s quite the YELLOW markings,
I think any model is worth building ( per the modeler )
I think you do a great job on your builds, watched some of your past videos…
I’ve used some TECH- MOD decals… when I go to IPMS SHOWS, I buy up decals when I find them…
Building models is supposed to be fun, LOOKS LIKE YOU’RE HAVING FUN, and that’s what is important…
    I’ll keep watching

I enjoyed this build, as well. Detail is poor by modern standards, but it's still a decent representation of another beautiful (albeit somewhat portly) Horikoshi design. Experimented with some extreme weathering/paint chipping for my build as I wanted to convey extreme use/lack of primer seen in the later stages of the war.

    • @jonsmodelkitreview4624

I agree Darrel. It seems like weathering is all you can do for an interesting finish on some Japanese Navy aircraft.

Your colors are very very close needing a touch of orange in the yellow. I have an origional Japanese release of Revells' 1/32 J2M3 Raiden and it has a color plate of this aircraft.
