200$ vs. 2000$ - GUITAR METAL BATTLE! - Cheap vs. Expensive

  • Does a cheap guitar suck? Or can it indeed be enough to record your music? Is the amp more important than the guitar? In this video I play a 200€ budget GIO Ibanez from the new Ibanez 2021 lineup and it competes against my most expensive guitar! An Ibanez Prestige for 2000€. Let's see - or better hear - where you can hear differences of tone and clarity.
I have included different sound samples:
    #1 - Introduction - 0:00
    #2 - Rammstein - Du Hast -1:13
    #3 - Lamb Of God - Laid To Rest - 1:44
    #4 - Slipknot - Psychosocial - Pitch Shift Test - 2:21
    #5 - Slipknot - Psychosocial - Shred Solo Test - 2:55
    #6 - Metallica - Master Of Puppets - Clean Test - 3:53
    #7 - Metallica - Master Of Puppets - Digital Amp Test - 4:11
    #8 - Summary - 4:49
    #9 - Endcard - 6:10
Furthermore I DID NO TWEAKING like I would do it on a fully produced mix. All I added was a low pass and a high pass filter to leave out frequencies that would hurt the ear and for the solo I added reverb. You can hear a true signal of the guitars through my amp without any post production.
    GENRE: Metal
THANK YOU TO MY BF for shooting the video!
NOTE: I produced all the tracks by myself with VST Plugins and free mastering software. I am no skilled tone engineer or a Pro Gear TH-camr, so forgive me if it doesn't sound as tight as on other channels run by male colleagues.
    Stay tuned and rock on!

    *My Opinion*
The Gio is totally amazing for its price. Of course: you can hear when you pitch shift down to Drop A you loose a lot of gain. Here the S series wins clearly. Other than that... man you can get some badass pinches out of the guitar.
Also: the Gio gets minus points for a „clear mix“. When you add up tracks played with this model you don’t get the clarity like with the S series. Yet again... I didn’t EQ the guitars to emphasize their sweet spots!
You can hear that the s series adds more definition and that it serves with more clear tone. But... for 1800€ less you get an amazing instrument! 😊👍
Also: Upgrade you amp first when you feel comfortable with your guitar! Because playability always comes first!
And also here the Gio is good!

To feel the difference of any guitar, need to listen to how its tree sings, harmonics, overtones, sustain. The price is determined by the musicality of the tree.
Cheap guitars only have "sings of strings", without tree. You're right!

This actually proves that it doesn't necessarily always come down to having the most expensive instrument but it comes down to how hard a person practices and works at their playing. I mean yeah those high cost guitars are awesome but the cheaper cost guitars can in some cases be just as rad sounding when you use them right. Awesome review. The S hands down wins for its clarity and sound, however the Gio packs a punch for an entry level guitar at the price! The amp is of a steller quality, the S reflects that. That Gio is asking for some EMG 81 or Seymour Duncan blackouts Ahb-3s upgrades. Party on 👊 JJ.

    • @tomwhittaker9461
      @tomwhittaker9461 ปีที่แล้ว

The pickup upgrade could pretty much bring it to the level of the more expensive guitar. But for a fraction of the price difference. You don't have to go for SD or Dimarzios, you could get Toneriders, e.g. Tonerider Octane or Generator, these could do fine as well.

  • @Crivicus

I can hear a difference, the s-series is slightly more fuller sounding which allows for more clarity within a mix but it's remarkable how good the Gio is. Could you do a test on how well they keep in tune by comparison to each other as well and let us know how that goes? How do they feel to play? I have always found much of the cost for a guitar is in the playing comfort and confidence you can have in it as a player, at least for non-signature/non-replica series guitars.

The more I hear that little GIO, the more impressed I am. The S Series is better. It's clearer and less compressed, but it's much closer than I expected for the price. Definitely not 10x better. I guess you're paying more for looks, feel, quality of components, and being made in Japan. :) An expensive guitar is just going to be a nicer experience and make you want to play it more. The thing is that you have to give it a setup before you play.
The pickups are not the best such as the electronics, but, what i do is, i disassemble the eletronics, do a nice copper wrap, change the wiring and pots and the jack plug. The switch is good quality so you don't have to change.

The GIO sounds good for the price but the S definitely seems to have crisper clean tones. I have that same S and also have a low end RG. I know my S has a much wider range of tone and definitely much better build quality than my RG. Unless you just have money to burn though I wouldn't suggest wasting $2k on a guitar if you are just learning. You can learn plenty on a $200 guitar.

Great job on the video and it must have been fun to make. I can hear the difference in clarity of the green one. It doesn’t mean that it’s better. Which one gets the job done or if it works for the session then no worries and both seem like they play and sound just fine. With other brand guitars not just Ibanez why one may be in a more expensive tier is that we have to keep in mind playability, parts, woods that are used. For example real wood versus a veneer top, fret work, stainless steel frets versus nickel. Basically features. Mass produced guitars versus more of a hand built with more quality control may cost more. I played many cheap guitars and some work well for the project and some are exactly what they are. Same said for expensive. But I do own both and certainly prefer my amazing playing expensive guitars :)

Absolutely love your videos, and this is a comparison I've been recently wondering about. I have an Series Jiva, which I love , and it's super light with great sound, neck is perfect. For 230 or so usd, the Gio has my eye for sure, especially if the neck is close to the same. Wonder what the weight is compared to an S series? Getting into active pickups and have considered putting them into a Gio. Would do it to the Jiva but the pickups in that already sound great. Thanks for doing this comparison! Totally what I was looking for! Really like to hear your take on gear and why you use what you do. High quality as always! Way to go Lady!

The humbuckers I could detect a slight sound difference, but those humbuckers from the premium model in the Gio would be a great compromise.

I picked up one of the GRGR131EXs today and it's phenomenal. I have an 8570z, 5120M, 570 Genesis and JEM70V SFG... considering that it's $800 less than the Genesis and $2800 less than the J Custom it's a freakin' amazing guitar. I think for someone just starting or needing a back up they can't go wrong this this model, switch the pots and pickups and it will sound even closer to the Prestige S model!
