    Actually something associated with family name happened before WW2 in Korea (and Taiwan).
    Koreans (and Taiwanese) who spoke completely fluent Japanese called themselves by Japanese names in order to be treated like Japanese. After the war some Koreans started insisting they were discriminated under Japanese annexation to be forced to use Japanese family names...
    This is a big Joke for Japanese people.
