2012 Dodge Challenger R/T Test Drive & Car Review

  • www.autobytel.c... The 2012 Dodge Challenger R/T is one good looking automobile and this muscle car exudes a road presence unmatched by the Mustang or Camaro. Outside the Challenger has remained true to its heritage with nice broad shoulders and retro front end. The Challenger R/T has a base price of just under $30k but offers the best deal of the bunch. The base V-6 model costs $25k ($5k less) but with the R/T model you get the 5.7 HEMI V-8 engine that produces 410 horsepower and 400 lb-ft. of torque. The Challenger SRT-8 is almost $14k more than the R/T. The 2012 Dodge Challenger R/T gets 15 MPG in the city and 23 MPG on the highway but you do not buy a muscle car for its gas mileage. The Challenger is built on the Chrysler 300 chassis which is why it has the most comfortable ride of all the new muscle cars that are currently for sale.

    I have a toxic orange 2011 R/T. What he does not talk about is the ECO MODE. When I'm on the highway 4 of the cylinders shut off. I drove the car from Brenham Tx, where I bought it to Port Huron Mi. and averaged over 27 mpg. It will also run from 0-60 in less than 5 seconds.
    I love this car.

    I think the review is right on the money. I test drove a Camaro and the Challenger R/T back to back and love the Challenger. Being 6'3" and 220 I don't fit in the smaller cars very well. Didn't even have to scoot the seat all the way back for the Challenger.
    I think it's a good deal for what you get, decent power+comfort. You others that are hating because of numbers should go drive one.

  • @autobytel
    @autobytel  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @bigd194 The base price for the R/T is $30k. If you add on the Quick Order Package 28M R/T Classic that's another $3800, Electronics Convenience Group $695, MOPAR Exterior Appearance Group $1995, MOPAR Interior Appearance Group $780, ect...ect. So the test vehicle that is all trucked out for this video swells the price to $40k.

    I rented one of these when I was in Las Vegas, and it's really an awesome car. Being used to driving European cars, I was actually impress by the ride quality, and even tho people say lots of bad things about interior quality in American cars, this one was pretty good in my opinion. Too bad it cost at least 5 times as much to buy here in Norway tho..

      Yeah haha. I go both ways. Sometimes I like to change gears with a stick and sometimes I just like to drive without having to worry about shifting. But yeah you can use either one. There's no clutch that you have to push. Just move the shifter knob.

    @bigd194 Thanks for all your help man, I really appreciate it, and Its been good info to my deciding factor. I will start off with a lease, with a 30 day option to opt out getting most of my DP back if I decide so. And this is a friend, so if I like it after 30 days I will most likely be including a financing/buy out option that won't hurt my pocket.The only reason I did not finance the WRX was because I wanted the STI Limited, and my WRX was standard no leather no sunroof, basic system etc..

    In my opinion the dodge charger is the best value of money car in the market, build the dodge charger the r/t max version and the amount you get for 38000 usd is mind blowing. :O

  • @thechinadesk
    @thechinadesk 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I like the Charger too, but it doesn't offer a manual transmission.
    I find automatic transmission cars boring to drive. Not enough to do. I enjoy shifting. It's not a hardship for me. it's not a chore. It's a pleasure. Every gear change is an opportunity to improve one's driving technique.

  • @MadMax1Hammer
    @MadMax1Hammer 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @bigd194 Basically the same as the 2012 very small changes, an offer hard to refuse. And its a black/black Manuel, the 2012 lease on the r/t plus is about 400 with a 2500DP. My main concern is how it handles in bad weather and on bad pavement. I live in NewYork City and the roads are all used up and.. And the second main concern is the skidding, research is telling me you can pull a 4.8/4.9 with the challeneger R/T 0-60 and as a sports car fan I can't go with anything less then a 4 second car.

  • @MadMax1Hammer
    @MadMax1Hammer 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @bigd194 I'm thinking of getting a 2012 R/T Plus, How is the car? Are you enjoying it. Speed, luxury, over feel and interior? The only thing that bothers me is the skidding. I'm coming of a WRX AWD drive car that was running 0-60 in 4.8 stock, I leased it, cause I am a Subie fan as well, and I love tearing up the floor no matter what Im driving on, dirt, grass, sand, the WRX was a beast in that category (I had the reg WRX not THE STI).

  • @exxx247
    @exxx247 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Read the post. He was saying the R/T hasn't lost.

  • @super8man
    @super8man 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    The R/T actually gets about 17mpg around town if you drive it like you stole it. However, on any stretch of freeway the average goes up to at least 22-24mpg...even higher depending on your route. As for price, the base model 2012 R/T six speed is the best deal - $27K plus tax and license.

  • @MadMax1Hammer
    @MadMax1Hammer 12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @MadMax1Hammer I needed something to get around on, and I love Subaru; I had an SVX before that. So I feel good about the lease I had and enjoyed it. Plus I got a cheap lease and a good deal with a minimum down payment on the standard WRX model; after all speed wise/suspension and power it was all the same, just a drop in luxury which to me was a also a big deal, but never the less it was a lot of fun and sufficient. I would have not afforded to buy it anyway at the time, I barely made my lease.

  • @MadMax1Hammer
    @MadMax1Hammer 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @bigd194 Im concerned about accel from start, I'm a accel freak as well, and most upgrades I'l do will focus on that. Since Im used to the AWD WRX, takeoff has been one of my fav things. But dam it does have the badass look I crave, and in my point of you the best muscle car out there. The Camaro didn't interest me too much (but price per looks is worth it) but base models can hardly perform. Id rather go with the BRZ if were talking below 25k. So how has the take off situation been for you?

  • @MadMax1Hammer
    @MadMax1Hammer 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @bigd194 So how is the skidding/takeoff (does the road have to perfect to takeoff or does well in fir weather conditions as well)? Can you get it to accel without much pealing or does it always have to peel and can get stuck on bad pavement. Cause then I would def have to look for a tire upgrade especially considering the heaviness of the car.

    @MadMax1Hammer Plus Subaru/Dodge share similar interests when it comes to lease/financing, they are pretty expensive and the standard deals are high. I mean you can lease the CTS Cadillac V-coupe AWD with full luxury at 3.9 -0-60 and a 55k car, compared to the SRT wich around 40K asking for the same price 499$.

  • @thechinadesk
    @thechinadesk 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    My original order of preference was Mustang, Camaro, Challenger. But the Challenger has grown on me. It is now my first choice.
    Part of it was how I conceived the car. I initially thought of it as a pony car.
    But once I starting thinking of it as a muscle car instead, as a modern version of the GTO or Roadrunner, it suddenly became more attractive to me.
    I'm not in the US now. Otherwise I would consider a Challenger R/T with a 6 speed manual. It looks like the most bang for the buck.

    Def is a nice car but its suppose to be a muscle car. The rt is so slow cars like the new genesis coupe would spank it. 14sec 1/4 mile does not classify it as a muscle car anymore. Mustangs and camaros at start is a full sec faster. And they are keeping it up to date. New 2013 mustang conv does 12.6. Dodge can easily add mopar parts to the rt to help but as usual they are just resting on their laurels and falling behind the comp. It takes a srt version just to keep up with base model stangs and

  • @MadMax1Hammer
    @MadMax1Hammer 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @bigd194 The challenger is similar in price, and I love the look. The peeling off is something that bothers me so much it slows the acceleration and on bad pavement you basically get stuck, I had skidding period, unless I'm drifting on corners.

  • @MadMax1Hammer
    @MadMax1Hammer 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @bigd194 The one last thing I would ask you is; Since I'm not to familiar with dodge or its aftermarket parts. What would be a good way to increase accel and decrease skidding. And if you get a chance to post it here or PM me, what would be nice to put 3K into, exactly what parts. Honestly after 30 days if I like it, I will take the buy option (most likely). Thanks Again

I am torn I must admit. the SRT is just a mother of violence, the 2012 GT mustang i'm in handles great and pisses off the boys in the M3's. if i had the money I would keep both. but there is just something about the challenger....it has more of the sleeper look.

      So I have a 2011 with 62 thousand miles and never needed a thing other than oil changes. Very solid and fun to drive. Funny how this is a review on the 2012 yet they keep showing the 2011 toxic orange. Same car I have.
