The fields of Athenry, Irish song

  • Irish are great composers... they can make you feel as they feel. This song was written in the 70's by Pete St. John. It is an Irish folk ballad set during the Great Irish famine about a man (Michael) from near Athenry who was been sentenced to transportation to Botany Bay (Australia), for stealing food for his starving family.
As always, I loved to sing it. Hope you will enjoy as much as I did

Should not play this, always ends in tears. My beautiful mammys favourite, she sang it to me when I was a baby.... God I miss her every day... But she taught me so much.. I am a better man because of amazing capacity of love and compassion. The brightest star in the heavens. The angels will keep her....

This belongs in the canon. It is right. It is so beautiful. It is heartfelt. Her voice and version are absolutely gorgeous and true. This version should stay. I want an equivalent Irish voice now, along side this great one. Not knocking this one, at all. As I've said, this one is canon.

stop boy for fuck sake, theres 12 and 13 years olds at Fleadh Cheoil that do a better version. not to mention the Dubliners, Ann Breen, Francis Black, Máiréad Carlin ect.. Even the High Kings do a better version and I think them crap..............

Cathal Ó Diubháin...Wind yer neck in !!! The mans entitled to his opinion....at least his is positive. I suspect yer a GAA man !!! With that sort of negativity Ireland wouldn't have thrashed England in London to win the "6 Nations" Rugby Grand Slam on St.Patrick's Day., probably wouldn't even have joined the thousands of Irish singing this beloved song on the terraces at Twickenham. Bet your possibly a closet "Dropkick Murphys" fan as well.!!! I agree with the lad's opinion.!!!:

Considering that you are singing in a second language, your songs are sung with the intensity of love of the Irish People and culture. I was privileged to know a “ Spanish Lady” she was truly beautiful, with raven black hair.
I fell in love with her from the moment I met her. Your singing does you great credit No wonder the Irish and Spanish have a great affinity.

Its not about romanticism and nostalgia, it follows in the oral tradition of Irish story-telling, and is and is a reminder of the things that were really done to us. It is also a call to remember values which served us in the past, pride, courage and resilience. In the immortal words of Liam MacUstin, “O generations of freedom remember us, the generation of the vision...”

I am an Englishman and love this song. I spend a lot of time watching different renditions of it and yours is one of the best I have seen . There is just something beautiful when a woman sings it with a fiddle accompanying. It is just such a shame that so many Irish songs are rebellious and many comments from the Irish are full of hate Yes, theEnglish did you wrong but come on, that was a long tome ago and time to forgive and move on. I have been to Ireland many times and spent many a brilliant night in Dublin at Gogarty's. The vast majority of Irish are warm, friendly, funny and brilliant musicians, don't spoil it for them.

@@leonryan8895 Absolutely love Raglan Road. Luke was probably the best singer of it, but also liked Ronnie's effort.

    By a lonely prison wall,
I heard a young girl calling
Michael they have taken you away,
    For you stole Trevelyan's corn
So the young might see the morn,
Now a prison ship lies waiting in the bay
    ()
Low lie, The Fields of Athenry
Where once we watched the small free birds fly
Our love was on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing,
It's so lonely round the Fields of Athenry
    By a lonely prison wall
I heard a young man calling
'Nothing matters Mary, when you're free'
Against the famine and the crown,
I rebelled, they cut me down
Now you must raise our child with dignity
    (Chrous)
Low lie, The Fields of Athenry
Where once we watched the small free birds fly
Our love was on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing,
It's so lonely round the Fields of Athenry

My wife and I were in a pub in Tralee. Her grandfather emigrated to the US from a small community near Tralee. There was a trio playing Irish music. But after a few songs they played some German folk songs that my mother used to sing. At break I asked the performers why they sang German songs. I was told they spend much of the summer playing in Germany and a group of seniors in the back were Germans who came to hear them. I went back and talked with the German group. My family history is German on both sides and I speak German. They were lovers of Irish music and so am I. Evidently Irish music is loved by more folks than the Irish and Americans. th-cam.com/video/GyOHvA0Wcgk/w-d-xo.html

My father was born in Orense, Galicia Espana & my mother was born in County Limerick Ireland so I am of true Celtic ancestry.
I love your rendition of this ballad...I'm playing over and over. It's somehow very moving for me. Thank you so much!
