  • Organization makes all the difference in a workspace! But, cost can be a challenge. Don’t let that stop you! There are items you likely already have or come with the products you are organizing that you can use. Some are permanent solutions, others fill in short-term until you can put a more robust solution in place.
We’ve found that getting organized is never an event; it’s an ongoing process and effort to beat back disarray by having designated places for tools and supplies. Doing so makes the workspace almost self-organizing. When we have quick access and intuitive places for tooling and supplies, it’s literally easier to put things away than leave them out!
While there are lots of great organization tools and racks for the shop and tool chest, many of them are a significant investment. That’s fine when you have the cash and you’ve settled on a method of storage and retrieval. Said plainly, we avoid committing to an approach until it is proven. It’s like renting a house in a new town you’ve moved to until you’ve seen what area of the community has the amenities you feel are important. Once you know these things, then you can buy with confidence.
To start organizing your shop, there is a lot you can do with very little investment. This episode shows how to begin by modifying consumer packaging that many tools (such as wrenches, nut drivers, and screwdrivers) come in. Other candidates for repurposing include corded and cordless tool carrying cases. Even small flat sturdy cardboard boxes can serve well in tool chest drawers. Once you get good habits in place, you can always upgrade later.
If you’ve come up with some creative and cost-effective organization solutions, feel free to share them in the comment section!
When it comes to getting started with ORGANIZATION, throw ingenuity at the problem instead of cash. JUST DO IT YOURSELF!

I love that you are so organized. I recently inherited my dad's tools and accessories that fill up a 4-car garage, unsorted and unorganized. I am far from over with the grieving stage yet, when I am I will slowly sort through them. I am not a handy person and don't even know what many of the tools are for, but I cannot part with them for emotional reason. I will slowly learn make good use of them. Your tips will be very useful. Thank you!

Kee, thanks for your kind words of our videos! We're glad to be of help. Having your dad's tools is a special gift. It's a legacy and you know that your dad's hand put them to work and created things with them - and you get to do the same. Stay tuned for future episodes on other organization practices and systems we are putting into our place. Are most of the tools you have more mechanical or maker (metal working, woodworking, etc.) oriented? Getting all those tools organized is a great honor to your father and we're glad to be a part of that process. Best Regards, DFJ

Great way to repurpose! Love ways to make use of things we'd otherwise put in the landfill or recycling bin. Can't wait to see your shop in person!

Practical Jay is always THINKING. Now I know one reason why. Jay and Maggie do a puzzle now and then. Puzzles are are good for the mind. We all benefit from the Cooper’s quality improvement approaches to just about everything.

I love buying candy containers from Sams(M&Ms, Starburst, ect). It's cheap and you get a sturdy see-through container. Great for loose screws, legos, etc.

Putting kaizen foam in the Dewalt case would let you make a form fitting tool case. Great video!

Magnetic knife holders can hold any shape or size of tools, as long as they are steel

Enjoy your videos Jay. The one with the method to loop electrical cord up, I use all the time now!
I live in Melbourne Australia I I have been surprised to see the better quality tool cases like the Dewalts abandoned on the nature strip. When I am out driving about I have always got my "seagull" on the look out for such tool case. Over time I have scored a few & put them to good use.
Some of the plastic latches on some of the other brands do become weak & break. I have one currently where I am thinking to make metal latches like the ones on the Dewalt cases. I figure it can be done with out too much messing around.
With double shell blow pack moulded ones, the other problem with cutting to inner shell is that it is poly polypropylene & even with modern adhesives , it can be hit & miss to get a strong bond.
But there have been moments when I have stared catatonic @ some of these double shell cases scratching my head trying to dream up away I might be able to repurposed them. & there does not seem to be a straight forward solution that is not going to be over labor intensive.
I have used better quality super glue type adhesives with a primer like Loctite 770, it is described as an activator. There maybe other adhesive systems out there, I have not gone too deep into it.
But for some projects I have been in the habit of using polypropylene sheet, which is not that expensive to get & you can get it in a range of colors & thickness. The above mention activator with a superglue type adhesive for the most part gives a good bond. some times if you are bonding different batch polypropylene I have found I have had inconsistent bonding some times. Best results are achieved bonding the same batch material with like.
S I am planing to see if I can repurpose one of these double shell tool cases in this way, it may be too involved but I just want to see if it will work.
Make a tray with a lip or flange & cut out the inner shell of the tool box & bond the tray lip to where I have cut out. even if I mechanical fix the tray to the shell with self tapping screws or rivets. I think it is even possible to get plastic rivets. Perhaps a project I may not ever get around to :0)
But I was thinking that if it did work & I had 4-5 cases & did them all in one go then it starts to seem a bit more practical & worthwhile. Though many of theses cases are of flimsy construction often the handles, latches & closures are sturdy. Even if I have the money to by a new case I hate seeing stuff get tossed.
I have one that is a case for a socket & spanner set (USA translation "wrench" I guess) & the hinges were just plastic flash & have long since broken. So I was thinking to cut the outer shell away & insert it into a "seagull find " better case.

Leon, thanks for taking time to write and tell me your approach and thought process about re-purposing these types of tool cases. Glad to hear you are part of the DFJ family all the way from Melbourne. I had the opportunity to visit there several years ago and really enjoyed both the setting and the people! If you do get this all figured out on the adhesives and materials to get the desired results, let me know. You can write me at jay@dirtfarmerjay.com. That way, I'm sure to see it. There are times that I miss replies to replies as they are not as visible as I'd like them to be! The best to you and yours! DFJ

@@DirtFarmerJay Thanks, I have saved you email. I don't know how soon I will do it. Kind of need to to the socket set soon but there are always more urgent things to do. As you stated if the double shell ones are becoming less common than perhaps trying to repurpose might not be a good use of time. I think I might do a bit of reconnaissance on it with the major tool outlets here & see what cases are being sold with kits. I appreciate your reply & I will email you a line or 2 @ some point. Best regards

I try to avoid buying tools made in China, unfortunately many tools are manufactured there. Husky brand tools being one of them. I look at labels and if it’s made in China I pass and try find USA made or European tools no matter what the price. I will support American made tools whenever possible, but it’s getting difficult.
