    If I’m a 13 year-old boy, this is one of the funniest videos ever found on the Internet. But for me, it’s incredibly useful. Although I have seen mice go through spray foam like butter. The steel wool/coppermesh and silicone are indispensable.

      @@miamonroe4195 Great Stuff brand Pest Block spray foam supposedly has an additive that makes rodents not like the bitter taste so they won’t chew through it. I have no personal experience with it.

    Great video, sealing up is key. I use a product on Amazon called, Lazy Cat Rodent Repellent spray which works great. It basically puts down an invisible barrier of mint and cinnamon oils that irritates their senses and they do not want to stay around. Also works great to spray on equipment and wires to avoid chewing.

    Most expandable foam forms a water resistant skin on its surface and when you cut it, sponge-like holes are exposed and it's no longer water resistant. I've never seen any that are solid all the way through.

    Great Stuff brand makes an expanding foam sealant called “Pestblock” to seal out vermin. Compared to ordinary expanding foam sealants, Pestblock also contains a very bitter tasting chemical known as “Denatonium Benzoate” which pests hate to gnaw.

    So my problem is the hole is right underneath the heating unit & I’m worried if I use copper steal wool or caulk that it’ll catch on fire. I like to have the heat pretty high because I hate being cold. Any suggestions?

    • @whostolemunchkin
      @whostolemunchkin ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You could try seal fix, it's like caulk but for fixing oven door seals so can take a lot of heat. There's also fireplace sealants, or aluminium tape is great if its on the right surface (ie a flat surface it can adhere to, like metal) Fibreglass tape might work too?
      You can usually check the maximum temperature various sealants are rated for, anythign rated for ovens, stoves or fireplaces should work fine. Silicone can have a high heat rating (same kind of silicone they use for kitchen tools, so pretty heat resistant) but I would still check the spec sheet/MSDS. Put a kitchen thermometer under your heating unit when it's at it's hottest and check the temp, it probably won't be crazy high but good to check.
      My first choice would be aluminium or fibreglass tape (if it'll stick) or seal fix (or any caulk/sealant rated for ovens/fireplaces etc)

    Not true at all. The gap shown at 0:28 is too small for mice to go through, caulking is still good to prevent bugs and air draft. The holes shown at 2:46 - caulking with wire mesh is not enough. Rats can be so aggressive they pull out the caulk. Spray foam won't help either, mice can chew through that - plenty of YT videos show it. Either staple the wire mesh to the wall or better yet, get hardware cloth and screw it on in addition to caulking (for bugs and air sealing).
