Actually, dead mice do stink, and it lasts a couple of weeks, but it eventually goes away. This is probably the best info I have come across to get rid of unwanted pests. Thank you!
Came here for the same thing. We had one fall in our sump pump and it smelled to all hell. Granted, maybe that's because it was in the water and not just in the air but it filled the entire 3 story house with stink. This is why I don't use poison inside, they just go off and die in the walls and stink
So, a follow up to my post. As I mentioned before and as people who have had dead mice or rats in their homes, they DO smell and bad! LOL Once they've completely decayed then the smell is gone. With that said, I bought the Contrac poison bate off of Amazon and I can testify with 100% certainty this stuff works! I haven't seen a rodent in a few months, and given it's winter where I am this is the time of year they get inside my home and hunker down. Not one trace of any rodent has been found and for the first time in ages, our home is quiet, clean and at peace. When spring hits and critters are running around, I am going to place more outside to ensure any new visitors will not make their way in. The Contrac does the job.
Thank you! TH-cam really needs to make this the first video you see when searching for “how to get rid of mice” more info in the first 10 minutes than i got in over an hour of searching.

This is fantastic advice but for one thing. I really do appreciate the concise pure info. I do have one contradiction. Dead mice do stink, they decompose just like any other living thing. They swell with gases, they burst, they will go off and die in your walls and if you have a very unsealed home which is likely given the mouse/rat issue to begin with, you will smell them. The smell can last up to a week before it disipates, usually because they dry up. This is lived experience talking here so 12:37 yeah gotta call you on that one. Keep up the good work!
Idk man, I just doused a couple cotton balls in peppermint, clove, and eucalyptus oils and placed them around the house and the rats/mice haven’t been around since. Obviously the problem isn’t solved, we still have to go about sealing up entry points, etc, but the essential oils def do work to repel the rodents.
I think I just have a few mice, didn’t even realize until my cat brought me one that he murdered one last week, so I started searching and found droppings in a few drawers close to the floor in my kitchen. Doesn’t look like they have gotten into the food, but you would think with cats around, they would go elsewhere….so I tried the peppermint oil and dryer sheets, and there are less droppings, but I think they are still here. I’m going to call an exterminator and have them look for entry points. I don’t want to poison them or set up traps.
From what I researched, I heard they do not like Peopermint oil. I bought a high concentrated peppermint rodent repellent from Home Depot. So far it seems to be doing the trick! I already have baking soda. I will be purchasing cotton balls, ammonia, and maybe moth balls to make a concoction solution to place in a small bowl to keep in the crevices of my home. Anything is worth a try!

Just want to say that he has excellent advice but to me, he has the add on agenda of selling the Contrac, which he did an excellent job of along with his helpful knowledge. The grocery store poisons like decon & tomcat definitely DO WORK. At least they sure did for me.
Thank you for sharing all of this info. I live in the boondocks and mice are everywhere! I do have a question. What about cornbread mix and baking soda?
Good video, I've been a amateur pest control guy for years, but learned a few things. The good commercial poisons can usually be found in farm stores, they will always come in big containers, and the active poison ingredient will be 5%. If package says 1% (Fine print on the back) it's not effective. Mice are attracted to warmth and will find their way into engines of every kind and can do a lot of damage. If you are a kind catch and release person, just wait until you have a $2000 repair bill. Place bait stations against the foundation of the buildings, experiment with locations as some are better than others. Near parked car if you park outside. Garages and crawl spaces are hot spots for mice. Always put plenty of the poison chunks in your crawl space. You can just throw them in as no other animal will find them down there. Traps are high maintenance and only work if there are a few mice...with real infestation, you'll never keep up. Always be responsible when handling and disposing of poisons. The chunks look like tasty candy bars to kids. I recently started experimenting with baking soda and Plaster of Paris corn bread mix concoctions, but there are no mice or rats here anymore so I can't say yet if if works.
Traps don't keep up with how fast they multiply. I didn't even catch 1, and I laid down a lot of them, they all got tripped. I now bought those black boxes from Home Depot and put the poison bait inside. Cats can't get inside
@@1whitecottagelife770 I like the idea of the copper coils and I was always told to use steel wool under the sink where the plumbing is. Can they chew through steel wool?
Wow, that was really thorough, thank you! It covered things that I had been wondering like when they decay, how bad is the smell. By the time I was watching this, I had already forgotten it. I really appreciate that you covered the ethical ways. It warmed my heart that you are not cruel. I also appreciate that the contract just pretty much puts them to sleep. As someone who has digestive medical issues, the thought of them having that, even for a moment was not setting well with me. My husband will be very glad to hear it as well. The dime size holes or entries are just astonishing. I knew they were creative and agile, but that outdoes the ants that I had in my syrup bottle that was just caked with syrup under the cap and yet they got inside. An observation is that these little guys are arrogant in that when you hear them and go looking to see which drawer or cabinet they are in, they just stay real still. If you leave, they will immediately continue on their little journey no matter how noisy. The very second you hear it again and open up the drawer or cabinet, they will stay there and they know you can see them. Rude!!! I remember one mouse years ago in my daughters house in TX when the little guy decided to peek out from under the dishwasher. It was so cute because he wasn't even trying to hide. Not long after that, he went out into the middle of the living room and began to take a bath. It was an open floor plan and I think he knew that it would be almost impossible to catch him. Thank you for your very informative and easy to understand video.
That is what is astonishing me is seeing them out in the open when they sit there and just look at you in the middle of the floor or they’re running along the side of the wall and stop and look at you and run past the sticky trap. It never used to be like that years ago. They were afraid of humans and now it seems like they are the ones toying with our feelings
Just curious if there is a next level treatment other than what his been suggested… I’ve sealed every hole crevice & access; I removed all my baseboard heater covers to seal access & even placed aluminum flashing as an added barrier. Is there another level of treatment
@Chris Van, what can I use that is equally effective poison wise as contract? I live in California and starting next month my pest control said they are legally no longer able to sell or distribute the poison for bate boxes?
It sounds like Contac is the one thing that really works, recently I moved into a mobile home and have an infestation and I’m terrified every day. I was excited to see something might work but when I went to order it’s not allowed in California! What else can I use that is similar?
50 droppings per mouse per day! That sure puts my mind a little at ease, I thought we had a huge infestation in our basement based on the amount of droppings observed. I did see a live one come out of hiding earlier today, the mouse went over to the trap to see if we had replenished the peanut butter. Kid you not! They licked it clean off from all the snap traps! I'll try some of the other methods which you had mentioned! Dead mice do stink! We disposed of two dead mice within the last week, placed them in zip lock bags and this morning setting our trash bins out for trash pick up - yikes! The stench was awful!
Thank you, I have been so stressed out because of my mice infestation. I’m literally going insane😭 I love animals more than anything but this has gone way too far and I think it’s affecting my health and my sleep they are gnawing at the walls in my room at night, it’s driving me mad. I am cleaning today and setting traps. I really hope it helps. Thank you for this information, very helpful!
I have mice issue at my room. Did you manage to get rid off them? I am going mad, I am really very sad and I can't sleep knowing there is a mice in my room.
Perhaps it may help to know that the only thing a mouse is interested in is it's survival. Which has nothing to do with you personally. They will not be crawling around you while you sleep. They are not dangerous unless they carry a disease. They are annoying. And problematic. But they do reproduce at an alarming rate and have adapted to their environments in such a way as to be able to survive very well. So the best thing to do is get to the most effective and immediate solution as possible, the poison, and be done with it. In the meantime, you can sleep well knowing that the mice in your walls are not thinking about you at all!!
Extremely helpful thank you so much!!! Time to get out the ladder and see where’s there’s holes in my top up there somewhere.. I already sealed up all the entrances from ground level.. n there’re still getting in somehow.. only when it rains tho it’s strange.. I only see them when it’s raining.. I’ll check my roof n attic now.. thank you
So we rent our property, and we definitely have at least 4 or more mice based on how much poo their is. We have a live, spring, and poison traps. I immediately caught a mouse within 20 minutes of putting the spring trap down. My question is do I keep putting the spring trap in the same spot or should I move it?
@ChrisVan this video is 2yo at my viewing. Thank-you for the information. How do you clean after mice? My issue is my pantry with painted wood shelves. I am not in the position to remodel the kitchen.
I am using Victor electric mouse traps. They get them but how do I know when they are gone? How long before my last kill? I am having great luck with p-butter. I can’t look at a dead mouse so I just throw away the side with the mouse. I have caught about 14 so far. Only a couple were large enough to see the tail sticking out. The rest were very small.
You recommended using Contrac poison, but what happens when you have dead mice everywhere behind your walls and in your attic. I m sure that you re not gonna be able to stay in your house because of the awful smell from decaying mice corpses.
@@hollyroxy25 They DO smell, maybe it depends on the poison you use? I have used Rid x and could smell the rotting little body for weeks if I couldn't find it! Gross!
Those repellent high sonic frequency things don’t work? Good thing I didn’t pay for one, but why do they all start running around when I turn it on? That is not a coincidence, is it? OK so where do I get this poison bait to get rid of these guys? I’ve lived here for almost 6 years and how come they never came here before? This just now recently started. And they do make a lot of noise at night. And I have seen them running through my pantry, but the pantry only has canned goods!
Best storage container i have used for dog food or chicken feed is a metal garbage can with metal lid. Mice can stink sometimes if they happen to decay quickly.
Thank you! A mouse ran across my living room yesterday and I almost fainted. My cat died and now I have mice from a bird feeder I have on my deck. I am going use your suggestions and try not to be so scared of them! The mouse was looking at me last night😐
When you say you've come across a dead mouse and it didn't smell, it must have been either fresh or dessicated beyond the smell stage. BUT I will try some of this product. Thank you for compiling and sharing this information.
What about the fleas and other bugs the mouse carries, will be kill with the poisons as well or the bugs will be looking for new host? And what happen with all the poo left behind, will attract other mouse to get in? Thank you for your reply greeting from Canada.
I hired pest professional to place stations around my house to eradicate rats in the neighborhood. I was told the technician would wear gloves while setting up the stations. I’m concerned about this because his smell is there and the rats will avoid the station. Right?
@@virginia3723 they only do small patch work that most people can do themselves, I need a bigger project to secure the basement but didn’t know if there were specific companies that did that or if I should just hire a construction company
Our mice are coming in the dog door we are not sure how to change that and we have them in every room I'm trying to find some help in Colorado the greeley area
I am in Loveland. I have solved the mice problem, I think. But with spring and a garden planted soon, I always see mice in and around veggies. This year I want to avoid that, it really is disgusting. Tried to find supplier for Contrac, many have it but in large quantities for $100 or more. So I’m looking for similar product but not in such large amount.
Wait what?! Lol idk what kind of dead rodents you’ve been around but rats/mice have died in my house/in the walls/somewhere they couldn’t be found before (usually bc one of my cats brought in a catch that managed to escape but then crawled off somewhere in the house and succumbed to their injuries), and lemme tell u, it smells freaking AWFUL for weeks!
We use glue traps for recluses for first 6 years, then got a mouse infestation. I oil off and release anything I can, except the recluses. The mice are oiled off 500 feet away at the front of our property with lots of woods in between. Just got one of those lids that you put on a 5 gallon bucket. Have caught 7. These I transport off the property to a wooded area, away from residential homes and properties.....
Thanks for releasing them and letting them get into someone else's home. These things can transmit sickness and disease to humans and cause expensive damage. Plus, they are overpopulated. Catch and release helps no one.
Just slow the down the video voices- Ask just about anyone, including kids how to do it. Very very simple for someone not tech savy- then you will know & easy to remember.
Hi. Thanks for the great info I have a question.. I saw mice droppings in multiple places. Along baseboards around the living room baseboards as well as by the dining table nearby. However I've seen the bulk of the droppings underneath the stairs. My wife saw one inside in the living room which was the first time we saw one in the house and didn't even check underneath the stairs yet. My wife opened the door to the storage area underneath the stairs and saw two mice run into these holes on the ground. Following that day I called pest control. They set bait stations inside that storage room and we discovered a hole outside of the staircase area (also a storage area). Since pest control, ive had that exterior hole patched and the holes on the ground and wall openings patched up and filled with concrete and spackle. Since then I haven't seen any mice droppings. Is there a chance they got trapped in those holes and died from not being able to escape from the cement patched holes, they're alive and well inside the walls or they managed to escape out that hole that leads to the outside before everything happened. Ironically. One random day I heard the gutter on the outside of our bedroom make tapping noises. It ended up being from the rain. However I banged on our wall pretty hard and I heard a squeal. Does that mean they're inside the walls? Or by chance a mouse or rat was outside and I heard it. Thanks. Sorry for my poor writing.
Thank you!! I moved back in with my mother 2yrs ago.. been hearing them in ceiling and walls.. I'm a lil worried about the yard next door.. it is a haven for rodent's and pests. I've already seen a possum, hedgehog and ground hog.. mind you, we live in a city in row home. Believe they have a few nests in several different areas. They're food source is in the yard next door.. cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce and whatever else is recklessly planted. I believe their coming in through the top of my window and from a hole in the back of the house by door. I found a nest behind the one wall in kitchen by the back door not sure how to decipher their Pooh. It kinda looks like rat droppings but I could be wrong. I've also been smelling wet dog after I cleaned kitchen with bleach.. I'm going crazy bcuz of all the disease and virus they carry.. I believe they are the culprits for a flea infestation I had over the summer and are responsible for chewing through my ovens wiring.. which scares me even more.. can anyone describe the smell of mice and/or rats? My cats have been keeping them at bay and been showing me exactly where they are in walls but I am having a hard time luring them out.. any suggestions before I tear walls and ceiling down??
Hoping you got rid of your problems since this comment is a year old that is so awful. I know exactly how you feel. I used to hear them in our walls too.😢😢😢 I caught 49 on sticky traps from having our back doggie door open because our dog wouldn’t go through it with the plastic down and didn’t know we were developing a problem since we’re both disabled 😢😢😢😢
I have outdoor cats that kill mice constantly. But they still get in. I live next to a grassy field, and there's a huge construction project going on. Ever since this project started, it's been like The secret of NIMH in my house.
They don’t smell if they die of poison or naturally. The mouse caught in a snap trap or that chewed his arm off on the glue trap reeks horribly if you don’t find them in time.
Ugh I had a sick dog that I left the back & garage door open for him to go in & out for 2 nights in a room & now we have atleast one mouse here. I have a baby so it gives me sooo much anxiety. Don’t want my dog getting fleas from it, my baby eating its droppings because he has a habit of eating anything off the floor still. I’m almost sure it might be nesting in my room because I’ve seen it leave twice from behind my headboard. Put a blanket at the bottom of the door so it couldn’t escape & sticky traps around. It avoid all the traps so easily & knew where to jump to get under the blanket crack at the corner. I bought the vector electronic box next to the wall by the oven because I watched it go under after leaving my room. I’m thinking of using bait but I’m so scared my dog or baby will get ahold of it but in desperate
Very good honest information and the only thing that was not correct was the fact that dead mice inside the walls of your home do in fact smell like dead animals as all dead animals smell when decomposing. Other than that take all his advice!
Currently I cannot determine where mice are entering my home. Can I use something on the floors (like flour or talc) without poisoning my dog or attracting more rodents? Second do strong scents like bleach or ammonia create a deterrence?
The sound devices are crap...but..if you have loud speakers and you blast high frequency through them. They don't like it and freak out. I blast this through speakers and the scratching of the walls stops immediately. Its worth a try if you have these
Ugh I had my soccer cleats in my garage. I had some super rare cleats I bust out every summer. Decided to go check them out and I found poop in them and the laces all torn up. Im so pisser off.
Very informative but doesn't the poison bait cause a long, slow, lingering death? If the antidote is Vitamin K that suggests that the bait causes internal bleeding because Vit K is a blood-clotting agent. I have evidence of a mouse travelling around my kitchen surfaces during the night, Is it most likely that he/she is just coming in at night or actually living behind the fridge or other appliance/cupboard?
Not necessarily. I think personally the ethics of a way to kill something is pretty subjective. Each person has their view and it’s a bit hard to prove what hurts a mouse less when it’s dying because that’s also subjective to the mouse.
I just bought Mouse X from Amazon to try it out, it’s supposed to kill them with no pain and put them to sleep, doesn’t transfer to other animals when they catch them so it’s non toxic, also there is something in it that’s supposed to dry it mummify it’s once it’s dead and take away 90% odors or something, this is my first night trying it out and if it doesn’t work im thinking of mixing it with peanut butter
@@hollyroxy25 I sure will! So far I’m really not sure, the mice have been out and about but don’t know if they ate them or not, I may wait a few days before I mix it with something to lure them in to see what happens. I’ve heard of other things like baking soda and all that also but I have too much of a soft spot for animals and don’t want them to die in pain if I don’t have to go that route. People have been urging me to buy glue traps but I just can’t do it!
I had a tiny mouse die in the fan at the bottom of my fridge. YES it smelled very strong. It was a sickly sweet decomp smell that went throughout the entire first floor. Maybe they don't smell IN walls idk. But dead mice DO smell.
interesting video. Couple of things you said though are not true. 1. Mice absolutely do not like strong smells like peppermint oils and the like. The only reason there isn't any "Proven" research on it is because companies do not want to spend money on a study and then tell people they don't have to sell them anything because they can do it themselves. 2. Mice & Especially rats absolutely do smell if they die inside your home. Most of the "Official" poisons dehydrate them from the inside out so that they are not as likely to smell. But if you use a poison that does not dry them out and they die inside your home they will smell. Luckily they are so small that they will dry out within a few days to a week so the smell will not last too long. You didn't mention anything about homemade poisons such as baking soda mixed with flour / sugar etc... These have proven to be quite effective (Though of course not "Officially" for the same reasons as the peppermint oil mentioned above).
This was extremely helpful, I will have to ask around if the poison you recommend is available for me (I live in Costa Rica), if not I'll try to get something similar. Because my fear has always been that my cat will eat a poisoned mouse and die. I'll follow your recommendations, I live in a rural / mountainous town and I'm tired of dealing with mice. Thanks! 🙃
Smaller mice can actually get though a hole the size of a pencil !! ..when I do a CLEAN OUT ..after I seal up entrances on the outside ..I use Plastic LARGE RAT glue boards ..with Tiny dab of peanut butter on center .. because mice are social and want to go where other mice are you leave the dead mouse on the board for a couple days I come back the next week for return service and remove sometime 6-8 mice! on a rat size board.. these are generally placed up on The ledges in the basement as the mice get into the basement or garage and then get into the rest of the house... Once I do my sealing up and clean out with the large Rat boards .. I then install mouse rtu (ready to use) bait stations on the ledges of the basement.. with contract or even better quicker kill FINAL BLOX .. inside the bait stations .. final will kill the mouse quicker it's not running upstairs in your house until it dies...MICE do smell if you get a number of them dying in the wall.. this is why I focus on the basement where they originate from and they usually die near the furnace on the floor because mice go to heat not water after they've ingested the final blox .. since I've already done the sealing up .. and the clean out.. getting rid of as many as I can with the RAT glue traps first.. only an occasional mouse will die inside in the basement... If there absolutely no dogs in the house hold.. I can use a bait called fast track.. but only if there's no dog in the house because fast track has no antidote.. final block antidote is vitamin k and a dog would have to eat an awful lot of blocks of final to be affected... I absolutely disagree with exterior bait stations for mice.. exterminators actually use these big giant rat stations and what you're actually doing is attracting the mice to your house.. then when they eat the bait they're going to come in the same holes they come in normally and then die in your house and you're never going to kill the millions of mice that are outside in the neighborhood or in the woods near your house... So I frown on putting exterior bait stations unless we're dealing with a rat outside and then only a few stations where the rats actually are living outside..so seal up .. clean out via rat boards.. then install bait stations in the basement with final block ( or contract block if the problem is not bad ) ..PS if the house has attached garage.. it's important to make sure your garage doors seals on the bottom inside are in good condition..! . If they are not or the garage door does not close properly..(keep garage doors closed during the evening especially do not store garbage pails or bird seed in garage) ..
Wow, this was so informative. I remember when we had one bad infestation years ago I had a mouse stuck to a glue board and I came home and two other mice were trying to pull the mouse on the glue board off. It was so dramatic to watch and I felt so bad but what could I do so I can definitely see you saying to put one in the middle like that if you’ve got one, that was very interesting and also interesting to hear about the outside bait stations because the hotel I was staying at had those out around the foundation and I could swear that they had a lot of different people coming and going staying in there Apartments in the hotel and it’s a national chain in anyway, I know there had to be mice in that hotel, not to mention bedbugs and everything else because of so many different people and I always wondered if they were because they came out to my dad‘s house in charge $250 and put three of those outside around our foundation but never sprayed inside or outside and never came backbut thank you so much for all this information

How did you get rid of them?
@@ChristineHsrtTesseract Bait stations along the outside of the buildings, and in the crawlspaces. I used 'Just one Bite' and' jaguar' poison brands.

Talon block, muribrom cereal, vebitox.
I am going mad, I am really very sad and I can't sleep knowing there is a mice in my room.
@@conexaolondresbrasil I have traps that electrocutes them, they are brilliant
I am going through the same thing. I tried everything and nothing is working.

How long does it take for the poison to kill?
hi thanks for the info. where on line can i find "contrac"
Lots of places to find Contrac for sale, but only in large quantities for $100 approx.
Where do I buy contract from in Canada or which site
You recommended using Contrac poison, but what happens when you have dead mice everywhere behind your walls and in your attic. I m sure that you re not gonna be able to stay in your house because of the awful smell from decaying mice corpses.

Put white vinegar in a shallow dish and the dead odor will immediately start to lessen. Within a day the odor is mostly gone.

Hi. Thanks for the great info
I have a question..
I have mice issue now and I've been watching many videos and they say yes the can stay inside the wall 😭
Hello Chris, Ihave tried to buy Contrac here in Britian but

Good Job Comprehensive and Informative!! Thank You!!
He said a mouse don't smell 😂😂😂 what! You've apparently never had an actual mouse problem yourself
Maybe a rat smells. But I haven't smelt a mouse either
They don’t smell if they die of poison or naturally. The mouse caught in a snap trap or that chewed his arm off on the glue trap reeks horribly if you don’t find them in time.
I mean, he does have a big book, and it's open.... I think I can trust this guy. Going out to get traps now

If you poison the mice and they die where you can't reach them, can that be a problem?

Very good honest information and the only thing that was not correct was the fact that dead mice inside the walls of your home do in fact smell like dead animals as all dead animals smell when decomposing. Other than that take all his advice!
Very helpful. Thank you so much.
Currently I cannot determine where mice are entering my home. Can I use something on the floors (like flour or talc) without poisoning my dog or attracting more rodents? Second do strong scents like bleach or ammonia create a deterrence?

I feel the same way about the glue traps I have been using the no kill traps and dropping them far from home
Yes, I HATE it, but I HATE WORSE the damage & destruction they caused. Can't get them any other way
Very informative but doesn't the poison bait cause a long, slow, lingering death? If the antidote is Vitamin K that suggests that the bait causes internal bleeding because Vit K is a blood-clotting agent.
I have evidence of a mouse travelling around my kitchen surfaces during the night, Is it most likely that he/she is just coming in at night or actually living behind the fridge or other appliance/cupboard?
Not necessarily. I think personally the ethics of a way to kill something is pretty subjective. Each person has their view and it’s a bit hard to prove what hurts a mouse less when it’s dying because that’s also subjective to the mouse.
Dead mice in walls smell horrible for a few days!🤢
I was thinking I must have a sensitive nose 🤭👍
With certain types of poison that dries out their insides they won’t smell
I just bought Mouse X from Amazon to try it out, it’s supposed to kill them with no pain and put them to sleep, doesn’t transfer to other animals when they catch them so it’s non toxic, also there is something in it that’s supposed to dry it mummify it’s once it’s dead and take away 90% odors or something, this is my first night trying it out and if it doesn’t work im thinking of mixing it with peanut butter
@@lauraspangler5179 I’ve heard mixed things about it, let me know how it works for you
@@hollyroxy25 I sure will! So far I’m really not sure, the mice have been out and about but don’t know if they ate them or not, I may wait a few days before I mix it with something to lure them in to see what happens. People have been urging me to buy glue traps but I just can’t do it!
Does this info pertain to rats as well

Thanks for the video. It was very helpful.
interesting video.
Thanks! 🙃
Can it be any kind of contract?
you just need to love and care for them.. they will just leave like everyone else
Sorry!
Great video. Thanks.
