Good evening from Australia, I love seeing beaten old stuff given a new lease of life. I'm impressed and inspired. I've given old furniture new life by chalk painting and have come up fantastic. I have painted steel fixings for my windows and it turned out good, but threw tears and trails. Thank you for sharing your project Rick.
Some Options; For loose or blistering rust on sheet metal, scrape off rust / rust blisters with a wide metallic flat blade scraper, coarse sandpaper and or wire brush. Brush on a liquid rust convertor (phosphoric or tannic acid based) and then paint over with a top coat. OR Spray on a zinc rich coating - but the preparation must be very thorough. Some high quality marine grade rust convertors are 2 in 1 that converts rust and primes with a polymer coating via a single application.
@@timgreen2426 Good question. The acid will wash off leaving an inert treatment ready to be painted. A good quality enamel paint should become inert after a suitable drying period.
Evapo-Rust works really well too. I use this in a plastic tub and toss in rusty bolts etc and let them sit for 24 - 48 hours. Turns on really good. Adam Savage did a video on this product. He loves it. I seal the tub for future use and it just keeps on working. Water-based, Non-Toxic, Biodegradable too.
That is great stuff. I have a similar product sold in a 1/2 tooth paste tube size. Someone used to smear the black coloured version on our asshole bosses bicycle tires, seat, handle bars and pedals 🤣 Your excess grease, wipe behind padlocks and door handles etc as Thieves hate that, or smear it on their motorcycle / car front tires - makes pursuit intercepts faster... Put a big blob on a stick and smear it up some offenders vehicle muffler / exhaust, makes tracking easier...
You can use Redline CV-2 on guns? I use machine way oil but ....I guess I'm weird. I use CV-2 for front wheel drive CV joints but maybe it has other uses. 20 year old habits are hard to break. Hope all is going well down your way!

For the frame of the trailer you could look into POR-15 which is a paint on converter that is much thicker and more durable than the spray. If you use that though use disposable felt brushes because its a hell of a hard finish to clean out of a brush.
From my experience rust converters over time don't like the sun or moisture, so once cured it greatly helps to topcoat with whatever you have kicking around.

I repainted some metal tool cabinets with this appliance enamel after removing the rust and it has held up really well, even with tools rattling around in the drawers it has yet to chip or peel. Only downside is it takes 24 hrs to fully dry. Comes in spray cans and is available at Home Depot etc.

Did you check with the EPA, Council on Environment Quality, Environment Agency, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Department of Energy and Environment, Federal Agency for Nature Conservation and Texas Commission on Environmental Quality first? Knowing the government I may have missed some.
Now your in "MY" professional world. I would blow your mind on restoration & painting of damn near ANYTHING! My professional *(KAYCO) paint booth gives me an edge. I'm building a grandfather clock right now. It will get a light stain... (Clock movement built by a friend & I put it in. I'm not that smart) I've painted miles & miles of wrought iron fence in my day. Probably 200/300 gates too... If you looked up the #1 killer of rust in Texas, you might see a picture of ME! LoL! *Company in Tx that installs professional paint booths.
There's a product called naval jelly it kills the rust when you apply it the rush was eventually turned black and then it'll be done from there so I would sand it apply it wait for it to turn black then wipe it down with damp then paint
You did a good job at protecting and serving the shit out of that pesky rust

Naval Jelly is rather old school. There're much better products/materials.
Haven't used Naval Jelly in probably 30 years.
